To quote Loki's Season 2 finale: "It's a scaling problem". The MCU began making 1-2 movies a year and didn't scale up to 3 movies a year until nearly a decade had past. Yet when Disney+ was created, they started with 3 series a year. On top of that, of course, is that TV makes up many more hours than films do. We're not just mad about how disappointing The Marvels was, but rather that disappointment is compounded with the anger about Eternals, Multiverse of Madness, She-Hulk, Quantumania, Secret Invasion etc. I really wonder if Marvel will start taking projects off their calendar (Thunderbolts and Blade are prime contenders)

All these movie are executive-led, not writer-led. That explains all problems: scaling, rushed production, re-shoots, formulaic stories, empty characters, lack of creativity, … The historic movies we love are all passion projects of a writer who *sells* it to executives to get it made.

I'm a story guy too, but occasionally sometimes a movie is just "dumb" fun. I think Black Adam was a bad movie, but I had fun watching it. That being said I haven't watched a 2nd time so there's that. I couldn't get behind the Marvels because I don't think Capt Marvel is a likeable character. Maybe Brie Larson was miscast in the role because she just seems wooden. In this movie it seems they tried to give a personality but it still doesn't work. @@BryanCostner But it's a bad point. He criticised the movie for what he wanted it to be, not for what the movie wanted to be. The movie was stupid on purpose so you don't feel bad for the thousands or even millions of people who die because of the protagonists. It's nearly two hours of humour, slapstick, action and cuteness. It's really good at that. Dan's review is like saying The Godfather isn't a good movie because it doesn't have enough jokes.
@BryanCostner
@BryanCostner 6 ай бұрын
@@GothamClive "Was stupid on purpose" That doesn't excuse how messy, jumbled, convoluted, badly paced the movie was. That doesn't excuse how absolutely terrible the villain was. That doesn't excuse how the comedy in this movie falls completely flat. Just because it's stupid on purpose doesn't mean that it's a good movie if the story isn't compelling. I mean, look at Guardians of the Galaxy, it had some comedic moments because the characters started off as douchebag and thieves but James Gunn managed to tell a compelling story so that the audience could take the characters seriously whenever the movie needs to be. You get a lot of fun moments but you also get some emotional scene like when Groot sacrifice himself to save the Guardians from Ronan's ship collapsing and Gunn did the latter perfectly because he fleshed out Groot and Rocket's relationship perfectly. Whereas this movie, you don't care about a single character involved because the previous movies does a poor job setting them up (aside Ms Marvel) and by the time the movie was about to meet it's third act where you have a big fight with the villain, you just don't care because the movie does a poor job handling them with cringe dialogue and an undeveloped villain

I think Marvels big problem right now is that they were able to take B-List heroes like Iron Man and Captain America, important in their respective Universe sure but middiling in ours, and turn them into giants. They believe that they can do that with anyone. Throw Echo on screen and she will become the next Punisher. Maybe if this was 2008 when all eyes weren't on them, Marvel was hungry and the most importantly the stories were there. Now were more connected than we ever were so the second a studio tries to pull the rug over our eyes its called out for what it is. Nobody asked for this and if you're going to do it in this climate of the decline of the Superhero genre, you better come out swinging.

I think this is the first time I'm in complete opposition to Dan's take on a movie - I don't think it comes close to being an "unmitigated disaster" as he called out before (and I'm someone who thought Captain Marvel completely fell flat in the third act), but I can understand the points he makes here. Totally agree the villain was pretty one note and just served as a means for the story to move forward, but I thought everything else in the movie was fun enough to not be as terrible as I was expecting it to be. Definitely feel like D+ and the quantity of MCU content is sucking the life out of these projects though, so I really hope we see way less shows in the service of higher quality output.

I think it would’ve been great to have a Captain Marvel 2, and a Ms. Marvel movie, connected as a direct sequel. I agree with you, Dan. I thought Marvel did a pretty good job with the previous phases: the stories were interesting and you cared about the characters, culminating in the Avengers movies. They weren't meant to be Citizen Kane, but they were fun and -for the most part- coherent. They did it much better than DC, in my opinion. But this phase is mostly a mess. I wanted to like the Marvels, but it fell short -I felt the same way about Barbie, and it has absolutely nothing to do with strong female leads (all my favorite books have strong female leads), and everything to do eith unsatisfying plots. That said, Barbie eas much better than The Marvels.

I liked the movie! I've also been following your reviews so i was quite surprised when you said it was an unmitigated disaster, and did not recommend. Thankfully i watched your reviews after the movie itself, but it didn't make me entrench myself further into the "i liked it and i dont care what you say" camp. I appreciated your perspective. Like many others, i found it enjoyable, especially kamala and her family. I agree that many parts felt hodge podge- it felt to me like they wanted to promote the 3 of them as a team, but there was no real glue to them- carol and monica were from so many movies ago (also, how did monica age from preteen to a full grown adult while carol barely aged 😂), and Kamala's obvious idol worship of carol. I would've appreciated them having more scenes together, (like the training montage) such as the convo you mentioned between kamala and carol about making hard choices, and monica and carol's awkwardness not being resolved too simply. Ultimately if they had made it clearer who was the main hero of the group, and carol's character being fleshed out more, i would've enjoyed the story more. For me the villain was alright, you could tell she was never meant to be a big bad but just "evil minion surviving to now become the evil boss", but i did feel sympathetic towards her. The skrull part and fury felt very detached from secret invasion though. But i did like the action scenes, iman vellani's energy for sure, and ultimately it was a simplistic story with likeable people in it. It doesnt make it great, but i dont think this is the worst mcu film just yet. It follows through on its stakes (unlike quantumania), and there is longer term impact. All that said, i found it amazing (not in a good way) that Dan you had such pushback. Agree to disagree on this film, but you're still one of my favourite channels, and i will still look forward to your reviews!

I liked it. It also looked great in 3D, probably the only MCU film that was better because of 3D. Think the main issue of current Disney stuff, especially related to Marvel but not limited to it, is that it seems we are in a perpetual cycle of annoying the next thing, so you have a 6-8 episode show or a 2h movie that its main goal is not to tell a interesting story but instead hint at a future thing that people will find great and get hyped about it. Then after a long while the actual thing comes but then it again only serves to hint at the next possibly great thing. There is a name for schemes like this, they are called MLM or Pyramid Schemes. It boggles my mind that people still fall for it, seems like insanity.

I described it as a Zany film about interplanetary genocide. And so its a very tonally jarring film but Marvel always kind of tried to keep a breezy tone while telling apocalyptic stories. Sometimes, like Dr. Strange, it works, sometimes like here they fail. The issue here I think is amplified as you note likely by an incohesive creative process that lead to a movie that was bringing a huge web of ongoing mildly connected threads to the table. My guess remains that likely they ended up with a slow and boring cut, with tons of exposition and transition scenes that made the movie clear but sucked and they decided to try to just take the best parts and hope people would just go along for the ride and have fun. If some did, cool right. If you didn't that's also cool, the movie is a mess, its not my fault or Dan's fault for noticing.

But its terrible that its become a brand now like Dan says, and they can't get away from it. They almost never talk about anything they like, which is when I tuned out. Even with things they start to like, it just takes one scene to change their attitudes. In the end, there is only one thing Hollywood cares about: *money* . That explicitly requires them to *not* fight the tide when it comes to trends. Of course, if a movie flops because they leaned too much into pandering, they're not gonna admit it (that would be stupid and alienate everyone). But they will course correct towards the most popular opinions because of greed. This "culture war" you percieve is just the huge divide in the general population. (How asinine I think it is to try "fight" instead of mending relationships with fellow humans is an entirely different topic.) The YT channels that are always negative most likely don't care and aren't fighting sht either. They're just pandering to the opposite side as Hollywood does, because that's what brings *them* the most money.

I get that Marvel doesn't have a Wonder Woman and they wanted this to be theirs. I think Elizabeth Olson does well with hers and let's hope Rogue and Storm are well cast and well written to be a valuable and enjoyable female character. To that end shoutout to Scarlett Johanson and Haley Steinfeld. They have done their characters justice

In Captain Marvel, Goose eats the Tesseract and then some Kree.
