When I first got here, late December, until I moved here permanently, end of May, I had too much negativity. It was a byproduct of life in the U.S. But some time in June, I noticed that I was on a more positive trajectory! I'm still working on my positive growth, and everyone around me is noticing.

President Reagan and Speaker of the House Tip O'Neill, a Democrat from Cambridge, Massachusetts, were friends. They didn't always agree, but they were civil toward one another and played golf together regularly. They talked and listened to each other. Those were the days. We need more of that today.

Agree and enjoyed your topic and video. For our own wellbeing we should surround ourselves with positive optimistic people which brings the best out of us. Then too, there maybe some people who are drawn to us looking at our very positive outlook on life and enjoy being around us. Then as a very optimistic person we should strive to bring out the best of people that gather into our own closer circles of friendships.

It's accurate for people from my generation to have that resilience. I agree that we tend to have a more positive outlook and can find humor in tough situations, allowing us to laugh about them, move forward, and remain hopeful that things will improve if we put in the effort. We are grateful for each day and believe that better days will come. In contrast, I might say that the newer generations seem to struggle more mentally and emotionally, as evidenced by the high number of suicide cases among them and their tendency to complain excessively about everything. There is still a more optimistic mindset in my community and circle of friends.

About the first comments, Steve, I agree that our generation and the two previous, in N america, found ways to succeed after picking themselves up. And my wife certainly is like that, but mate, a lot of poorer province people, I feel give up too easily. Instead of taking those needed risks, they stay poor because of fear of failure. But they are outwardly happier than our current western entitled newer generation. Being brought up as a "depression" kid, as my parents were born in 32, and I lived most of my childhood with parents and fathers parents, made me more like a pilipino, not to mention that I lived in Asia for the better part of 4 years when younger, and it made me appreciate what I had, and have.

The average Filipino is a believing Catholic, practicing to some extent. Love of God and brother may have something to do with their happiness and kindness. I don't mean to exlude other Christian denominations. These too contribute to the joy and gentleness of heart born of a life of faith.

There are a lot more cranky people here in the US. Its hard to keep positive when one of these negative people have an effect on your life, have to remind myself that is not who I am and to be positive. Do wonder what kind of expat I will become, an introvert perhaps, or will I look for Americans to hang out with, or maybe I will learn enough of the local dialect to be happy talking with the local Filipinos. Am mostly a positive person but can get cranky sometimes, am not perfect. Think its when things happen to us that we weren't expecting that can impact us and then we over react maybe. Unfortunately am working part time now and still have to deal with others at work, one day will be able to fully retire and enjoy my life and not be so affected by others around me who are not happy with their lives. Thanks for posting, Steve...Jim

The Philippines is only at president 7 after martial law (17 total since independence)while the US is at 46 (30 after the Civil War). That is a huge age gap for government growth and maybe the US current government culture is just reaching the age of senility while the Philippines is still far from being a teen. Just something to think about and consider. Good vlog topic as always. Thanks for sharing.

Always a danger to generalize. And I would say that the American expat community is hardly representative of the american people as a whole. Your experience of our generation is vastly different than mine. Not to put too fine a point on it, but our generation (I'm 70) created the personal computer revolution. The Internet Revolution. Your ability to make money online and reach thousands of people sitting in the philippines is the result of the work and ambition of OUR generation.

So the second that I started having depressing thoughts, I said out loud "leave, get out of here and never come back" That was 20 years ago and I haven't since then been depressed.

Yes sir the culture of Filipinos are clannish and tribal. Would you believe that until at this present in the provinces when a relative or a friend visits their houses the household will serve them great menu of foods like chickens or special fish if they are in coastal areas . They will give them blankets, towel and other things that the household never use but just for visitors. These are the treats that make the family closer and frienships stronger.

There are some cases that some relatives condone the misdeeds of their relatives.But in random situations like in many many places of the country especially in the decent urban villages overwhelming majority of people does not condone the misdeeds of their relatives and friends who commit mistakes or crimes. Great majority of Filipinos values honesty and integrity since our country has a literacy rate of about 94%.

When Filipinos rally behind their elected officials, I just want to say that's not necessarily good, and the western politics isn't necessarily bad. There's a reason the Philippines is so poor and it's because they keep electing terrible leaders and not being critical of them, and not diving deep into the policy and whatnot. There's a reason the US for all it's faults is the wealthiest country, and it's because people really care about who they elect and that fervor is part of what causes democracy to put up better candidates, because bad ones illicit a lot of justifiably upset citizens. The division in the US is because unfortunately propaganda has done it's job in confusing the public, but ultimately the root of it is that people care about their country and want it to go in the right direction, and so they fight for it, and let me tell you, if you don't fight for positive change, you'll never get it.

I would be relying on my Social Security and VA benefits to live off of. With the presidential election coming up, and one Canidate saying he's going cut social security and take away our VA benefits how would an expat survive ? I would be in a foreign country with no physical means of support. This scenario could become a reality. What if anything would you recommend ?

I can’t agree with some of this one. Too many stereotypes for me. My experience is that people are people, and they’re all pretty similar. Most are good/positive people whatever country you’re in, there are a few negative people in any country and they tend to try and recruit others and drag everyone down. Same everywhere. What’s different is the economy, and that makes people behave differently. Poverty explains most of the differences between the Philippines and NorthAmerica. But that’s just my opinion. Good content, nevertheless. Keep the videos coming.

Although I agree with most of your videos this one I do not. I found the Filipinos to be lazy and ignorant for the most part. I found it to be an extremely passive aggressive Society. I also disagree if you bring one over to the United States they will change, I lived over there did not like it at all, mostly because of the people to be honest, but I did meet a wonderful woman and brought her back she is the same now as the day I met her. Although it is true, chances are marriage will work better in the Philippines, they do not allow divorce that is the main reason, just my observations and my personal opinion

Good video Steve. It's no easy to explain what you are covering here but I get it. I have thought a lot about these differences in American culture and Filipino culture over the past 5 years. I think it's not so much that Americans these days do not have ambition as it is the Internet just keeps droning on about the extreme examples. Much like all the news ever showed us (and still does) are the worst of other countries. If you went by the news you would never believe that almost 2 million Americans have moved to Mexico and live there. "how could it be when that is all drug cartels and so dangerous!!" ha ha So a lot of it is conditioning. And going along with that is another big difference. Something that I have realized over the past decade and come to dislike more as time passes. In the USA... "everything" is such a BIG DEAL. Even the slightest little thing is often blown out of proportion and causes trouble for people. We have a culture where "everyone" looks at other people including their neighbors with a crooked eye because people have been programmed to "see something say something" watch other people and distrust them and report them. All of that in my opinion... taking everything so overly seriously... attacking other people with calls to "authorities" and so forth over trivial matters... that is largely all missing from many other happier countries including The Philippines. Life might be harder in many ways in other countries but it is not as stressful because not every little thing can cause you trouble as it can in the USA. Just my 2 cents.
@PracticalPerson2024
@PracticalPerson2024 Ай бұрын
Really it is both far simpler and far more complicated than what I wrote because there are multiple factors that cause this huge difference. And the simple way to sum it up is that in the USA everyone is raised from childhood on to be independent. Basically everyone is encouraged to "be out for only themselves - look out for #1" - whether that was intended or not. In the Philippines, the culture is not only much more family-oriented - it is also Barangay as in neighborhood-oriented. And here is a perfect example of these things... earlier this year my girlfriend's cousin birthday celebration was going on. It was 1:30 AM and they were still going strong on the karaoke. I laughed and asked my girlfriend "one of the things I love about the Philippines is I think you are supposed to stop this karaoke around 10 PM but people just ignore that and yet nobody has tried to cause your cousin any trouble by contacting the local authorities. In the USA someone would have called the cops by 10:45" She said "Of course not! That'c crazy! Over here we are considerate of other people. Nobody will contact the local authorities about someone having a celebration because those other people know they will want to have their own celebration in the future. We wouldn't want someone to cause trouble for us just for having a celebration so we do not try to cause trouble for them!" That really hit the nail on the head. In the USA, in general, all thinking about courtesy and consideration seems to be people talking about how they want everyone else to be CONSIDERATE OF THEM... it is more a self-centered view without any real thought of what the other people want. AND it is also almost like some people just enjoy trying to restrict everyone even when they are ultimately hurting themselves too. And what she was describing was more of a mutual respect and sense of unity to "watch each others back" Basically they know it is always best to keep things between themselves. Of course, if there is a problem the local Barangay will work it out with no punishment to anyone involved the majority of the time.
