Hi. I started fixing,in 1974 . My age was 13 years old .In 1977 I went to Typewriter scholl in São Paulo Brasil, was olivetti factory in Brasil. And I work to 1984 fixing typewriter. I learned fixing letters 22,32 linea 88 and 98, studio 44 and 45, remington,facit and many others.

Mad props on the mainspring repair. I got my Linea 88 in a similar sort of workplace abandonment: a colleague at my college left his position under less than wonderful circumstances and ... left his old typewriter in his office??? I waited a few weeks (days? hours?) & asked several times if anyone knew if he was coming back for it, & when he never did, oh yeah, I snagged it. Figured I'd give it a good home & hey, if he ever wanted it back, I'd return it better than I found it. Odd coincidence: it replaced my Classic 12 on my office desk! ;) Well, as you say, it is a beast, a true yet quirky workhorse. Thx for the great vid!

I found your channel during the beginning of the pandemic when I really wasn’t going anywhere at all and when I would try to fall asleep at night I would watch smaller KZbin channels that felt like the creators had put lots of themselves into it, so it’s great to see you still showing off your passion for typewriters, its great to see someone with a passion and a love for something

HI I've just discovered your channel because I've just acquired an exact same model you're talking about here, an Olivetti LINEA 98 for $50 Australian dollars yesterday! I AM SO LUCKY! My husband and I are collectors of anything 70's. You should come to our home! This typewriter just made it even 'homier'. Thanks for all the info here and I'm a new subscriber. :)

Congrats on the repair of the carriage mainspring and wonderful clean up! In my experience with Olivettis, they not only have good looks but also work great. Maybe not so for some Letteras 22 but my Lettera 32 works superbly well! So they are not just prettier, they also type well. You said a couple times your Linea 98 was made in England but the label clearly shows Scotland, Great Britain, not England. A few Scots might take offence to that ;) Daniel

Hi! I have an Olivetti Linea 98 just like yours. I bought it on a site of useds here in Brazil. Funny that it cost R$50,00, something around U$10,00, and my brother-in-law got it for me, because it was 120Km away from my house. He rode with it for almost a week in his car, while the machine "wrote by itself". As incredible as it may seem, it was in excellent condition, despite being stopped for 20 years, it just needed cleaning, and a few maintenances on some loose springs, but no part was missing, no matter how small. I also have another Olivetti, the Lettera 82, which I got as a gift from my father, when I was 11 years old, in perfect condition, clean and lubricated. It works perfectly. And I recently buy Olivetti Praxis 201 II, electronic, on the same used sales site. This one, my brother got it for me, because it was 260 km away from home. Impeccable, working all functions, looks like new for R$ 40.00 or U$ 8.00, to (maybe) complete my collection. Olivetti is the most famous (and common) brand here in Brazil, and it's still easy to find. See you soon, all the best. Your channel is excellent. Oi!

I have an Underwood Olivetti Lettera 22 that is so compact and portable yet types like a dream! I give you credit for messing with the mainspring! Just like antique clocks, I will tinker with anything EXCEPT the mainspring. Although last night, I attempted to fix the space bar in my Smith Corona Corsair Deluxe and actually got it working BUT now the letter M won't type dark, and I can't get the upper shell reattached without it stopping ALL typing actions, so right now, it's assembled, minus the turquoise upper shell - but hey, at least the space bar works now - LOL!

My first typewriter was an Olivetti Lettera 35 that I got for £7 and worked perfectly - and then someone saw I had it and gave me another identical one. They're awkward looking but type well, though I do sometimes wish they weren't so... beige. I use the 22 and 32 more but the 35 is a solid machine. Also yes, don't go to Glasgow and say you're enjoying England..!

I own a 1976 OLIVETTI LINEA 98 that has a 15-3/8-inch platen. I acquired it locally on 02/26/2019 after finding in at a local nursery / antique consignment shop at a very low price. My Linea 98 is two-tone in color, its keyboard and keyboard surround are light gray in color, while the main body and ribbon cover are charcoal gray. It is a great typewriter with an elite 12 CPI type face, that's for sure! The only thing that I wonder about is that the carriage return mechanism makes a ratcheting sound as it is traveling to the left. I am thinking that that ratcheting sound my be common on this particular model, but, I am not positive of that.

I have a question, I have the same model but repeat spacer button is only making 1 space and stops. When I open the bottom cover, I can see the repeat spacer mechanism, which has a gear and a fork which is pressed onto the gear with a spring. When I press the button, gear rotates but then is grabbed by the fork and stops. I removed the spring and now the fork can't grab the gear and it continues to move on, but motion is more like a fast release and not repeated spaces. Should I keep the spring and maybe there is some other adjustment?
@JustMyTypewriter
@JustMyTypewriter Жыл бұрын
I'm not entirely sure- if the fork isn't grabbing, it might be a cleaning issue as anything can throw off an adjustment. It might also be that something else in the linkage that locks that fork in place may be bent or out of place. I would put the spring back in and check further up the linkage!

No, you don't remind me at all of Steve Jobs. You're far more interesting, probably because I never had much interest in Apple products. And I really enjoyed the "...because that's what a good foster mom does" line. It shows how passionate you are about your typewriters. I was curious as to how you got this one's color back. Do you use Retro Brite, like some vintage electronics restorers do, or are regular cleansers, toothbrushes and elbow grease enough?

Diamond being oh-so-cute again, love it! 😍 the Linea 98 looks even larger in this video than in previous videos! Quick question, is the carriage larger in size than a "normal" sized carriage? Would it be considered letter or legal?
@JustMyTypewriter
@JustMyTypewriter 2 жыл бұрын
I'm not sure of the technical classification. It's definitely a wider carriage and could definitely do a legal sized document. It was used in a post office before I had it, and I imagine they would need something with a much wider range.

I recently got this. The carriage seems to be stuck and doesn't move at all when striking the keys (the backspace key works though when it is striked). I'm looking to fix this machine as it has sentimental value to me ... But I can't seem to take this machine apart! The surrounding plates don't budge at all. How did you take yours apart?? Thanks so much in advance

The bottom panel should open to allow you to see inside and clean from underneath- that's where I would start! It's hard to take it out of the casing because it's bolted in there

@@JustMyTypewriter Thank you so much for your quick reply! I did take the bottom panel off. It got stuck after my initial clean, so I'll hope for the best to clean it from the bottom on my second cleaning attempt. The space and tab lock keys don't work properly, so I hope that's not the main issue. Thank you again for your wonderful channel. Your videos are awesome - so informative :)
