This was a live show in front of a live audience. You have to admire the actors who are able to remember their lines and have the timing to pull off comedy with no cuts or pauses. Too many people with 2022 mindsets try and apply todays PC culture to TV shows made as an escape from their everyday problems for a few hours. I grew up in that era and we had the ability to just sit back and enjoy the show without breaking everything down and putting under a microscope.
@mickram237 ай бұрын
And yet if you do put it under the microscope you find the first ever feminist comedy. I love this show precisely because there is so much to discover under the surface. That and the fact that it's also probably the greatest sitcom ever produced.

Watch the episode, "Alice And The Blonde" for starters. She stumbles in that one. 💣
@willmack59094 жыл бұрын
She may have stumbled, but remember, all of them did at times because Mr. Gleason did not do rehearsals, only read-throughs. Audrey, to her tremendous credit, would memorized not only her lines, but Gleason's and Carney's lines as well in case they ever got into a jam. She, just like her fictional counterpart, were the greatest!
@hidaven4 жыл бұрын
Will Mack actually, if you watch closely, Gleason is the one who gets tongue tied quite a bit and that was due to not rehearsing. Check out “the blonde” episode when he screws up Bert Weidemeyers name, calls him “Weidemoller” and then the entire cast calls him the correct name! Lol. He didn’t like to rehearse because he really didn’t like the format and the physical confinement of the set. That’s the reason he quit and didn’t do the second year. He wanted the variety, think on your feet, environment where he could ad lib. Very difficult to script a stand up comedian.

Audrey Meadows mentioned this episode in an interview once. She pointed out that after Gleason said, "The master has spoken", he made a gesture with his hand to show her he had forgotten the rest of his lines. You can see Audrey notice the gesture and how she had to think fast, so she saved the scene by ad-libbing, "Now that you've got your gas bag filled, why don't you blow away." Then, Gleason was able to fake it until Audrey started with the 'how could you's'.

There are in fact 39 "classic" episodes that were filmed in 1955-56 and are shown in syndication. The one you are referring to from 1979 was one of 4 "specials" that were shown on ABC. There were also several "color" episodes in the 60s that included the cast singing at times. Not to mention a litany of "lost" episodes that were originally part of Jackie Gleason's variety show from 1951-1957.

These were the typical "house dresses" of the common class 40s and 50s. Also considered "at-home garments," they were practical for doing choirs in and around the house while remaining comfortable and maintaining a ladylike respect and appeal. This is what I learned while researching fads and fashion for my own writing projects of the same eras.
