The Master | Oldest Friend (Doctor Who Tribute)

The Master / Missy / Back to the Master has always been one of the most interesting and unique characters on the show. They're such an integral part of the timeline in the show that it's hard to explain exactly how much of an impact they made to the show's narrative as a whole, whether it's Roger Delgado, Anthony Ainley, John Simm, Michelle Gomez or Sacha Dhawan in the role, it's always one that evokes a hatred, but also love, especially over the past few years with Gomez and her portrayal of Missy.
This edit focuses heavily on the John Simm and Michelle Gomez incarnations of the Master, as there is too much of the Classic Masters that I haven't fully seen, and Dhawan, wonderful as he might be, is still majorly a mustache-twirling villain without too many big character moments, hopefully when he inevitably comes back, he'll get more of them.
Coming up, I hope to make a TimeLords video, and eventually figure out how to make a video for Thirteen herself. Maybe eventually I'll do a Dalek video, and a Cyberman one too, but soon I wanna take a break from Doctor Who videos mainly, get a Sherlock one done, Stranger Things, some more Marvel, maybe even a Harry Potter video, get more diversity in range on the channel.

The biggest surprise with the newest Master is that he wants to die. The Master’s biggest motivation throughout Who has always been to survive. He is by far the most broken the Master has ever been. Damn though we need a resolution from Missy.....it’s different if it’s just the Master coming back, you don’t have to explain how he or she survived, but Missy changed. There needs to be something addressed there. And the fact that when the doctor tried to appeal to his better nature and he said “you and I both know I don’t have one” well then he must be pre-Missy because she did have one. That said there’s no way in hell Missy worked with the Master and didn’t prepare for a betrayal.

The way Simm's Master shot Missy and eliminated her ability to regenerate makes it seem like in killing her he was able to retcon her redemption out of his own future somehow. That feels exactly why he did it. Because he knows that obviously they have backup plans to survive in one form or another, but whatever the plan was ended up getting rid of Missy, and possibly left the subconscious motivation in Simm's Master to become more malicious than ever in whatever incarnation would come after her.

Dhawan's Master has to be before Missy, preferably before Jacobi's incarnation. It would make sense in the fact Dhawan's Master is feral and reckless, which would make for a nice build up to a very much colder Master, the War Master (aka, Derek Jacobi). As for Simm's version killing Missy, I believe that is where the Master truly dies. And personally, I'm ok with that. It's more than likely that the Doctor has met the Master out of order, so there's still plenty of time to meet other incarnations.

Give this man a master ^^ Really he need it especially after the last encounter of this two. With the 2 episode of the 60th anniversary it's obvious the doctor need that. I almost cried during his conversation with "false Donna about what happened to him and were he came from". At this time my only thought was he needs the master back. They could discover together what he is and where he came from. Because if time lords was created thanks to him, the master represent in a way the end of the evolution. The last time lord alive and the timeless child. The beginning and the end. Also the master more than only be the last is probably the most evolve time lord. Their is a reason if he is the only one alive and the only one connected to the doctor "like 12th says : the one who almost look like him". He is better than the doctor in telepathy. He has the same special way to analyze and understand things. That's for this reason that like the doctor he never died and find always a way out (where the other time lords are just stuck . They even resurrect him in the time War for this reason). And this is probably this special mind, this particular way of thinking that reunited them when they were child in the first place "I thought we were the same". The doctor in his precedent erase life doesn't have a friend so close to him. An other time lords which who he has this king of connection. Even in his current life he doesn't really care about any other time lords (like Braxatiel who was supposed to be his brother for example). The master is special. The master is also more intelligent in a way, even the doctor recognized that. The doctor understands technology, can use it, make it work or blew up, like we could see in all his adventures, but he rarely creates something. The master in other ways, create a lot of technology : The toclafanes (and the ship when he was only human), a laser screwdriver (with the Lazarus project inside to age the doctor), the archangel network, transformed the Tardis in a paradox machine, create a bridge with gallifrey with human technologies. Create a gallifreyan matrix for the cybermans (which is really amazing ), the device who can stop the planes, another who can miniaturazed people ect... And he destroyed Gallifrey by himself. Even with the Tardis, the master is a better pilot than the doctor, and the 12 doctor ask him to do the maintenance (because he is better to fix it). Physically it's hard to tell if one of them is stronger than the other, even if in the new serie the master has always win the physical fights. So I really hope before the reboot we will have a confrontation between the doctor and the master about that. The plot with the toymaker is perfect for that because he looking for a body. Let the master know he is not less because his friend is the timeless child and his species was created from the doctor. He is the result of this evolution (to bad the time lords spend half of his life to make him crazy with the drums). Better in a way, that's for this reason the doctor has always been attracted by him. Every body know it's the doctor and the Master. In his previous life their was no other name alongside his. So that the doctor already had a previous life doesn't make what they have less real, it's quite the opposite. They choose each other. The beginning and the End. Perfectly balanced. The two hearts, the two suns. It doesn't matter they are not originally the same species, at the end they are the same wood from which flutes are made (maybe a more sophisticated flute in the master case). The final proof is both the doctor and the master was rejected from the time lord society because they were differents. So the master isn't less, his friendship with the doctor is real, no matter the past life of the doctor or the fact they are not from the same species (we could discuss about that like Neanderthal and sapiences who mixed), at the end they chose each other because they were unique (the timeless child and the most evolved time lord (also the last)) and they need to find their equal (they did).

This is beautifully put together but MAN do I wish it didn't have Jodie and Dhawan. Nothing against the creator because everything else in this is wonderful but I can't help but feel showing Dhawan, the incarnation responsible for the destruction of the magnificent arch involving Missy, kind of kills the mood a bit. I just can't see Dhawan as the Doctor's oldest friend. Or 13 as the Doctor. I'm genuinely torn between my love of everything in here that came before and the disappointment and hatred I feel for what came after. Damn, I'm conflicted. But regardless of my preferences, it is a good video and I can see a ton of work was put into it.

If you watch the 3rd doctor’s stories with the Rodger Delgado Master it’s much easier to tell that the two of them were good friends. While they both tried to kill each other they always held a high amount of respect for each other and the two seemed to just enjoy hanging out together. But then as the years went on, the Master started to grow much more hateful and their dynamic became a lot more typically antagonistic. But even with the Master committing worse and worse actions, the Doctor still considers the Master his closest friend because he’s the only person he can really find himself relating to. They both originally bonded over their desire to break away from the stuffy bureaucracy of Gallifrey and go out into the universe, it’s just what they were actually going to do when they left that separated them. Companions come and go but the Doctor and the Master have always been constants for one another in a strange and twisted way.
