He was hoping that by going to the end of the universe she’d be able to escape whatever time-wimey thing still had effect on her after the timelords extracted her at the very lost moment of her death. The problem is her death is apparently fixed (because the countdown mark whatever on her arm wouldn’t disappear). Not that it matters considering she’s immortal and has a TARDIS (she can go back and die literally whenever).

Well, yeah. The Far end of the universe is the best place is hide away from your enemies (especially if you’re the time lords and everyone hates you; the Daleks would have started another timewar if they found them). The only other place to hide is the beginning of the universe, but then eventually if you’re immortal time will move forward and you’ll just be right in the middle of everyone that hates you again. Another universe might work, but that’s just depressing (and apparently there are other universe cybermen so who knows what other dangers there are). The end of the universe guarantees no one that wants you dead is alive and you can’t be found or reached. You know, unless Chibnall is writing the episode in which case literally anyone can find or poof to end of the universe Gallifrey because literal magic space portal (that is never explained). God I hate series 12.

It's obvious the doctor figure out who yana really was, because there was only one person he knew at the time who would go AWOL on the other Time Lord's. The perfect place to hide a Time Lord, as a human.

One of the best cliff hangers of the show. Series 1-3 saw The Doctor as the only Time Lord left in the universe, the 9th Doctor even saying he could feel if there were any others. Then came the face of Boe's prediction and everyone was coming up with theories, excited to see what Boe meant. Then after we see the human Yana spend almost the entire episode helping people and being a gentle and kind character who suddenly talks about his fob watch... It's the Master! Definitely TV gold!

To be fair, a) she was freaking out massively, b) she had absolutely no idea that at Time Lord could turn out like the Master - even Jack didn't know, and he'd learned about the legends of Gallifrey in his time, been a Time Agent, and spent over a century diligently researching everything he could on the Doctor and Time Lords. She had no idea of the danger.

Her actions look like she's got an idea that something's wrong. She immediately runs to the Doctor, unnerved by the way she's speaking (1:09, she's stumbling over her words, which implies internal panic) and she even questions the Doctor about it ("But that's brilliant, isn't it?"). I can't help but think she knows something's wrong with the Professor on sheer instinct, but needs to double check with the Doctor because she, as you suggest, doesn't quite get the Time Lords and is double checking before reacting.

It is a testament to Jacobi's acting ability that he can swap from kindly old man to evil alien criminal in less than a second. It is two COMPLETELY different performances and it is BRILLIANT! I really wish we had seen more of him on screen, though his audios are great. This guy scared me more than any incarnation besides Delgado. He was terrifying without even having to raise his voice. That is the sign of a magnificent villain. Quiet is always scarier than loud and the best master's (Delgado, Jacobi, and Missy) understood this.

3:43 From the look on the Doctor's face, it's almost as if he can feel the fob watch being opened, and as he remembers the Face of Boe's final words, it finally becomes clear to him. "You Are Not Alone" wasn't just a message, it was a warning. A warning, because there's only one other Time Lord that could've possibly survived the Time War, and he's been hidden in plain sight all this time. Genuine chills.

Russell T Davies said in the commentary for this episode that everything that happens in this episode is pretty much in service of pulling off the twist ending. For example: The only reason why 10 and Jack have to fix the engine is so that Yana and the Doctor are separated. It makes you realize how committed Davies was to getting this reveal right. That's something you don't really get with Moffat. He prefers to show you one card from his hand and then ask you to guess the rest of his cards. It's a different style and I even though I enjoy it, I can't help but miss the dramatic flourish of the Davies era.

ABC Australia did have a short 15 second promo with him saying "I am the Master" but luckily I had recorded the episode and stuff before, so in didn't see it till _after_ watching. And the moment I heard that chuckle… I knew. That's what's gotten worse, shocks revealed. Dark Water had clues to the Cybermen, like the design of the doors logo being a Cybermans eyes and other subtle hints - and they gave it away in the "next episode" promo of the previous episode !

Jereme Mitchell Jesus. Pass me the sick bucket. As excellent as RTD's era was (in fact better than Moffat's on the whole) he did have some flaws, such as the awful Doctor/Rose romance, the writing of The Master and way too many invasions of Earth. The stories were also not "perfect". Every writer has his bad episodes and the RTD era was nowhere near perfect, so stop acting like it was.

Honestly this is the greatest Master reveal in the new series. Not just because this was the first we saw of the Master after the Classic Era officially ended with the 1996 special. But because the way it is done is just so brilliant. The way the Doctor immediately starts to panic as if he already knows it's the Master. The way Yana hears evil words from the watch. "The drums! The drums! The never-ending drums! Open me you human fool, open me to summon the light and receive my majesty!" The way we can hear Roger Deldago's Master say: "Destroy him! Then you will give your power to me!" Because I never watched the Jon Pertwee Era, or any Classic Who for that matter, I can only imagine how goosebump-enducing it must've been for all you Classic Who fans when you heard that sinister voice. The way it cuts back to the Face of Boe saying "You. Are. Not. Alone." And at that point the Doctor completely realises. So amazing. Missy and the Spymaster's reveals were good too, but they still weren't half as brilliant as this. Russell T Davies truly deserves to be on the same pedestal as Hinchcliffe and Holmes, as the greatest showrunner/writer in Doctor Who history. I'm so glad he's returning!

Not only that but she said "his dying words"... and Jack should have known at that moment that if it is him they were talking about, he will eventually die. However in later episodes as well as in Torchwood episodes he still questions whether he could ever die so he either didn't make the connection or doesn't fully believe it. Great scene nonetheless, first time I notice this detail as well and I've seen this episode numerous times.

Interesting to watch Jack's reaction as Martha mentions the Face of Boe's revelation - wonder if John Barrowman had received the script for "Last of the Time Lords" by this point so as to allow him to respond to the name-check here accordingly? Regardless, even if I'm reading a little too far between the lines in this case, one could argue that it's hearing this which prompts Jack / Boe to utter the words "You Are Not Alone" come the events of "Gridlock". In many ways it's the bootstrap paradox (as recently described in "Before the Flood") at work again, although at least this time we're certain that the Master forged the identity of Yana, which in turn helps Boe to structure his message to the Tenth Doctor in New New York. At the same time, however, Boe wouldn't have known to give the Doctor and Martha his message if Martha hadn't mentioned it to Jack as a result of her hearing the message from Boe...and now my head's starting to ache again.

God damn it David tennant's acting in this scene. When he asks Martha 'what did he say?' and then he just doesn't even wait a second before screaming the question at her again. When I first saw this scene I never got the impression that the doctor was excited that another time lord survived. The doctor looks outright terrified at the possibility of a Time lord surviving the time war. And with hindsight after watching past Matt Smith and a little bit of capaldi's era, there were only two time Lords who could possibly still be alive after the time war. Rasilon or the master. And either one of those two being alive after the time war is a terrifying idea.

What I love about this is that 2 episodes before, in The Family Of Blood we're shown how far the doctor can really go if you chose to mess with him or the ones he cares about, but in this, the doctor is just terrified, I don't think we've seen him this scared before. And yes he did say that he was scared when he was about to die in 42 with the sun parasite but this here is genuine fear, the kind of fear that paralyses you and leaves you speechless. You wouldn't know what to do when you're scared like that and omg David crushed that performance (I kinda get the same vibe from Capaldi when he realises he's talking to young Davros)

This season, in my opinion, had the best climax at the end. All this build up and hidden messages, like the election posters and subtle messages. Then this. Then the severed heads of people from the future and alternate timelines. I was so impressed when I first watched it. I honestly hadn't been that big of a fan of the endings of the previous two seasons. The only redeeming point for both of them had been the emotional aspect.

I never liked the John Smith persona that the Doctor was hidden inside of so as to not have to destroy the Family of Blood. So I was happy when the Doctor opened his "watch" (for that reason & because of course wanting the Doctor back). But I mourned when Professor Yanna opened his. Because aside from suspecting that the Time Lord who was coming back was going to be very dangerous, I really liked Yanna. But of course at the same time as a viewer I was happy that the Doctor was getting his foil back. It's a shame we never got to see more of Jacobi as the Master.

I love the intricate writing of Yana saying he was found with it naked. It shows that he went from a time lord to human as he had no recollection whatsoever of how he ended up where he did or why he was naked, but plants the seed that it had something to do with the watch. Something that essentially erased his memory as it altered his biology. Makes you wonder what the first few minutes-hours were like for Martha when the doctor turned into John Smith in Human nature/ family of blood story

This reveal was so well done. Introducing the watch in an earlier episode so the audience would understand the significance. The mentions of Harold Saxon during the whole series. The Face Of Boe telling the Doctor he's not alone. The people the Doctor helped save in this episode becoming his enemies in the next two episodes. The contrast of the really nice old man to the evil Master. Most Doctor Who fans knew The Master even if they didn't watch the old ones. It was just brilliantly done. The music was great as well.

I thought John Simm was great as the Master. I hear someone complaining about how his Master was never serious, but you must remember that the Master is also a Time Lord. Time Lords sometimes change drastically. Take the Third and the Fourth Doctor for example, two very different Doctors. While the Third was a sarcastic mentor to his companions, the Fourth was an absolute lunatic. Yes, I agree that Delgado and Ainley were way better than Simm, but at least give John some credit. And I also heard someone say that Eric Roberts was better than Simm. You must be out of your mind. An American Master? Really?
