People have always found symmetry aesthetically pleasing and examples of it are seen in the earliest art. The Platonic solids have been known to humanity for millennia, some possibly even to Neolithic man, as can be seen in the carved stone balls found by archaeologists.
This lecture will look at how we can understand symmetry using mathematics, and explore how the rules of symmetry can deepen our appreciation of beautiful works of art and design.

Excellent Gresham! You're fulfilling the mandate of NOT promoting those lecturers who have a book to promote.

Heard _tiling_ and _Escher._ She's got to mention non-repeating tilings and Penrose next. Penrose, Penrose, Penrose ... 🤞 Chris Watson, Enid Marx, Orla Kiely, Zarah Hussain, William Morris (a token man 😁), Ebenezer Howard ... keep going ... Hold it ... 54:30 *_"When you understand the rules, then you can understand whether or not to break them"_* ... looking promising ... Giotto and deliberate symmetry-breaking ... that's got to be the segue to Penrose ... oh no, the talk ended! 😞

Art History teacher here... Islam does NOT prohibit the depiction of living things. Plants, animals, and people are all permitted to be shown; only Muhammad can't be depicted in any way. However, strong social taboos have come in and out of fashion around when and how human images can be made and displayed (historically such images have often been confined to small book illustrations), but animals and particularly plants abound in Islamic art and architectural decoration.

@@Silly.Old.Sisyphus I apologize for being hostile. The whole class thing feels ridiculous to me despite of the fact they exist in every society. I was brought up in China and propaganda or not, it was drilled into me that class are man-made social structure for the purpose of ruling and oppression. Of course it is never that simple but whenever I hear it mentioned it still elicit the immediate reaction of antagonization. I was being reactionary which was never the right thing to do. I’m sorry.

She keeps on naming years as 'BC'. Why? The scientific community in the Western World gave up using BC (Before Christ) and AD (In the Year of Our Lord) a long time ago for dating references in the light that Science does not need Secularism. The preferred nomenclature is BCE (Before the Common Era) for years before the old 1AD, and CE (Common Era) for years after and including the old 1AD. Other countries have their own traditional systems used by the populace, for example China when naming years (Year of the Monkey) and eras (Ming Dynasty), but even then the Chinese Scientific Community strictly adhere to the Western system. Please educate your lecturers and bring them into the 21st Century. Apart from that minor quibble, this was the very best explanation of Symmetry that I've ever seen on any KZbin channel. Totally perfect in every way. Congratulations.

right off the top...somewhere in those seemingly "perfect" tiling patterns, there will be an imperfection, purposely put in so as to not offend some mythical being....personally? symmetry is over-rated

Bit disappointed that she's using "BC" and "AD" Please everyone read BAZ SNELL'S comment, he explains why these should no longer be used.
