The Matilda House in Punggol [Urban Legend Series]

One of the three most haunted houses that tickled the imagination of Singaporeans in the 90s was the Matilda House in Punggol; also known as the White House.
During the years when Punggol was still under developed, there were rumours that the Matilda House was haunted and that every attempt to tear the place down were met with tragic incidences.

In this special Urban Legend Series, we unearth the stories and urban legends from Punggol and look at the history of one of Singapore's oldest settlement.
Walking through Punggol estate today, you won't be able to imagine that about a generation ago this place was a kampong area that looks nothing like the modern living landscape it is today.

Matilda house was our playground in the mid 70's. My grandfather & grandmother was the one working for Mr. Joseph Cushin family as a care taker since before & after WW2. My grandfather & grandmother house was just situated few 100 meters away from Joseph Cushin house. Me & my siblings would run around the big land up & down the concrete stairs towards the shore line & not forgotten we also get to play around with the Cushin's white stallion horse. What a great memories.

Used to stayed punggol and the kitchen window is facing the matilda house. I tried to see whether are there anything during sleepless night. But dont see anything. However, the matilda house they tried to demolished by not successful and some were injured trying to. Other phv driver told me his friend house main door facing the the matilda house. He strike 4d top prize. Of course, he bought the incense papers and burn it for them.

I actually went to this condominium to view a property late last year. I didn't even know the existence of this house. During the viewing I was never informed about the existence of this clubhouse by the broker. This is weird.

The developer for that area was Sim Lian group which is Ong Ye Kung's father inlaw's company. Surely they know the story of those urban story of the 3 workers died when trying to demolish it.

Although from heritage point of view, is good to conserve the house. But matilda house doesn't have rich historical value as compared to other historical buildings such as the old national library and many others which were demolished. When govt wanna redeveloped a place, be it historical site, nothing can stop the state from demolition. Matilda house does not worth preserving based non appealing architectural design unless it has paranormal reason which if difficult to resolve. So it is extremely weird, the structure is preserved as part of redevelopment

Government seem to have interest in keeping colonial era designed houses, so it's not surprising they gave conservation status to the Matilda house. If it was paranormal reasons, by that logic the Red and Green houses should still be standing today.

Punggol...yes back in my days... it was literally littered with all kinds of angry nasty and horrible ghosts demons and spirits..the authorities should have subject these things to several anger mgt courses..the rest that don't conform should be thrown into changi prison under ISA act.

At the end, What happen? Look at the old kampong houses... What happen to the villagers. They seem to be so afraid of the MALTIDA HOUSE and spreading out of unseen ghost, where nothing they can prove.... Rather then to chase out the innocent who live in kampong back then and at the end have to pay and pay for house loan..
