The Oracle never told Neo that he's not The One. The whole point of that interaction is that in order for Neo to be The One, he must know for himself that he is The One. Great reaction to this timeless classic! 👍🏿

18:58 Observe that Morpheus did this jump _without_ taking a running _start._ He just trotted up to the ledge and _leaped..._ and _flew._ So when Neo backed up and took a running start, that showed that he hadn't _gotten_ it, yet.

Great movie!! Great reaction!! Remember seeing this in the theater back in 1999 and being blown away. Saw it with a couple of friends, who took hallucinogenics prior to the movie and I swear I can almost feel their brains explode, especially during those bullet dodging scenes. Good times!! Let me tell you something. One of the things I really feel sorry for youth today is that they will never be able to experience the types of theater reactions we were able to experience. Everything is already spoiled beforehand these days because of the internet and social media. Back when The Matrix premiered, we knew very little about what to expect. The trailer basically just asked the question "What is the Matrix?" and showed Neo doing the bullet time dodge. That was pretty much it. So when we got in that theater and saw this movie here?? I can still remember being in a sold out theater and the crowd reaction. Especially at the end when Neo fully becomes "The One", stops the bullets and and punks Agent Smith's attacks like "Bruh. Please." When he turned to the side and was blocking everything with one hand and the other behind his back, the crowd literally jumped to their feet like "Ooohhhhh!!!" It was one of the most memorable theater experiences of my life and I saw all the Star Wars, Lord of the Rings, Terminator, Alien and Rocky movies in theaters. And yes....all the MCU movies too. The Matrix still stands out in my mind as one of the best crowd reacting experiences and will never be replicated. Kind of sad to think about.

-The sequels are notoriously dissappointing, but still worth seeing. The second one has a twelve minute long action/VFX set piece that sustains intensity and continues to keep showing you something new and scary and eye-popping and mind-blowing longer than just about any other sequence ever filmed. -They made the allegory of false reality accessible in a way that anyone who has been gaslighted by society about anything can relate to. There's all sorts of things "everybody knows" or assumes-is-true that we learn is false as we grow up, and often someone somewhere benefits from that delusion and pro-actively perpetuates it. Advertising, propaganda, stereotypes, gender roles, or even learning there's no Santa Claus, we've all experienced mass gaslighting of some nature. The Wachowskis wrote the Matrix inspired by their own experience as trans women. At the time they made the movies they had not transitioned publicly and were known as "The Wachowski Brothers" but after revealing this interviews, they are now simply called "The Wachowskis" -The character "Switch" was supposed to change genders between The Matrix and the "real" world. This apparently was too much for the studio back in 1999 -They were comic book writers. Producer Joel Silver didn't really get their head-trippy tech-babble guru script but was convinced to greenlight their project based on concept art and storyboards they got their comic book artist buddies to do for them. Much of the look of the squids, the ship, and the endless bullet casings in the shootouts are signatures of artist Geoff Darrow ("Hardboiled"1990 with Frank Miller (Sin City, 300) -As much futuristic science fiction tech fetishization is involved in this movie, the concept of the fake reality is not new. It actually goes back to "The Allegory of The Cave" that Socrates came up with in *380BC.* The idea is that if you are born in a cave, cannot escape and have no contact with the outside world, that is your whole reality. If someone from the outside world, out of your field of view, casts shadows on the wall for you to see, they can make you believe any reality they want. If you ever get free and see the outside world, you will probably panic and retreat to the comfort of your dark, familar, cave. And then the book Neo hides his contraband software in is French philosopher Jean Beudriallard 's Simulacra and Simulation" (1981) -The classic Star Trek episode "Spectre of The Gun" (1968) has the team trapped in a simulation of the Wild West. Just like in this movie, they realize if they can convince themselves none if it is real, the bullets can't hurt them. -In a classic Dr Who episode "The Deadly Assassin" (1976) he gets trapped in a simulated reality in a computer that they actually call a "Matrix" -The 80's anime Megazone 23 (parts one and two, 1985) is another story about false reality that this movie franchise shares a lot of imagery with, including the mechs vs robot-squids aesthetic. -Science fiction writer Phillip K Dick wrote a lot of stories of the nature of identity, memory, and reality, that inspired several of the best classic sci-fi movies from the 80's-2010's including Blade Runner and BR 2049, Total Recall (1990), and Minority Report. -The "Ghost in the Shell" movie from 1995 deals a lot with VR and simulated reality and is the inspiration for a lot of The Matrix's look including the green pallette, the code, and the way a lot of the action is staged and shot. The Wachowskis were also fans of Hong Kong action movies including John Woo "gun-fu" movies ("Hardboiled" 1991, different from the Geoff Darrow comic, and "Face/Off" 1997) and wuxia fantasy kung-fu movies. They hired Yuen Woo Ping, the choreographer of a lot of the most popular wuxia movies at the time like "Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon" (2000) -The YEAR BEFORE The Matrix came out "Dark City" and "The Truman Show" presented similar themes and ideas. "Dark City" somewhat conincidentally shares a lot of the Matrix's plot points and visual aesthetic, and The Matrix's production even recycled some of Dark City's sets. And then the SAME year as The Matrix, David Cronenberg's "Existenz" played with a lot of the same ideas. -Recent/current TV shows worth checking out are HBO's "Westworld" and Amazon Prime's "The Peripheral" -You should watch and do reactions for Blade Runner, Total Recall and everything I else mentioned after that. (Megazone is a deep cut - dubbed versions of them are on KZbin, easy enough to find and worth sitting through for hardcore 80's anime fans. But *definitely* see "Ghost in the Shell" and it's even-better sequel "Ghost in the Shell 2: Innocence" (2004)

I've watched MANY reactions to this movie maybe hundreds and it was during your reaction that it hit me when he said " have you ever had a dream that you were convinced is so real" all of my dreams I think they're real when I'm experiencing them ( I don't get them often anymore probably lack of sleep). I think we should pay attention to AI and make sure it's under control or end it all together. We have been subtlety swayed towards computer tech and our guards aren't up. In the wrong hands AI can be dangerous or even worse AI sees us like the agents in this movie do as a virus. Depressed humans may side with AI like that human fool did on Transformers 3. AI could be reading my damn comment right now Great reaction it was very genuine.😎

I saw it on big screen in 99. And I somehow miss the "old times". No Internet, no trailer, most of the audience were completely unprepared. And stunned. But I´m even that old that I know it´s a remake of Rainer Werner Fassbinders "World on a Wire" from 1973. If you ever read Foucault or especially Baudrillard (two french philosophers) you will know where all this crazy concepts come from.

You do have exceptional reactions and a new subscriber! You asked several times how someone could think this up ... Philosophy was one of my majors in college and there was a 16th Century Philosopher who asked how we knew whether anything was real, as opposed to an Illusion. It's exploring the question of what can be known - Epistemology. This was a great debate for centuries, leading to Descartes' famous saying: "I think, therefore I am." Meaning the only thing he could prove and know for certain was his own existence. Today - the Matrix is a metaphor for the false reality put forward by the Rulers to control the Masses. Plato spoke about this thousands of years ago - look up "The Noble Lie" and Plato's "allegory of the Cave" People who swallow the red pill has become a metaphor for those who see through "Noble Lies" sold to the masses by the Rulers. These people pose a danger to the rulers and are derided as "conspiracy theorists" - Declassified documents trace the weaponization of that phrase to a CIA memo invented to deride those who believed JFK was not killed by a lone assassin, but rather by conspiracy of CIA and Pentagon. And there are many other examples of seeing through the Lies - seeing through the Matrix. Anyway - keep up the good reactions! I loved your Casablanca and John Wick. I recommend you do "Queens Gambit" - 100% Rotten Apples approval.

One of the deeper aspects of this movie is that "Mr. Anderson" is only ever refered to as Neo by those who actually care about him - the name he chose for himself. (It undeniably belongs to the full story that the writers/directors (twin siblings) went through gender-transitions shortly after making this film, and they have voiced displeasure to the red/blue-pill symbolism being coopted by the far-right - obv, the story is much bigger, but ultimately about a hero who saves the world, by fully accepting that they are The One - or as the Oracle puts it: Know yourself)

His absence in the sequels is conspicuous, but this actor, Marcus Chong, did one of the _dumbest_ things imaginable in _contract_ negotiations. He threatened the Wachowskis. That's why he's not there. I guess Tank is smarter than Marcus.

The special effects, here, were _groundbreaking._ And they were turned to the end of telling an incredible _story._ Now there are _two_ other movies in this series in which the special effects are, in fact, orders of magnitude _better,_ but it doesn't help the story. I have gotten the impression the Wachowskis were cajoled into making _those_ because they had _already_ signed away the rights to the original storyline and the studio threatened to make them _anyway_ but make them someone _else's_ project; someone they got the impression would probably not to justice to the _original._

The original title of the Matrix was called the Third Eye created by a black woman. It symbolizes when you open your third eye chakra, you start to see the world for what it really is. You also begin to understand that you have the power to manipulate your reality through your thoughts, actions and words. You can manifest anything you want. Your spiritual talents come online such as telepathy, telekinesis, astral projection and more.

Great reaction. You were really on top of it. No flies on you. The only thing I would say is that try to see it not quite so literally. Yes it's a great story about how AI could ultimately control mankind but the real story is about spiritual awakening. Look at all the names and religious connections. The truth is we are already in the matrix. We live our lives through our minds that have been conditioned throughout our lives. But behind all the conditioning lies our true selves. Many spiritually enligtened beings from the past and in present day have transcended our physical world to realise our true nature.

One of the many facets of this film is the analogy to religion. Morpheus is John the Baptist, who absolutely recognizes Jesus as the Savior, “the one,” and firmly believes in him. He does this so much that when Neo's (temporary) demise he even questions the reality of "it can't be!". The Wacholskys have portrayed the resurrection exactly as it did in the old films, and did so in a masterful way: when the prophecy is fulfilled and Neo is resurrected, Morpheus answers the question "how?" with "he is the one" and the orchestra and choir sound in fortissimo. All facets of a film, visual, script-related and musical, are at their peak and give you goosebumps. Afterwards it is shown how Neo can no longer be harmed by the worldly things. Finally, he defeats physics by flying into the sky - another, if merely symbolic, analogy to the Gospel.

Hey @journeymarie this was a great reaction. One big eye opener of how the worlds orchestraters designed a world to keep the masses asleep. I have a special request the movie "They Live" a movie that's similar to The Matrix I would love for you to react to that movie if you have time. Please and Thank you!!

Hi, just to tell you all that the best part of the movie comes after seeing it. Day by day you will realize that this is totally real. Enjoy 😎✌

imo Matrix 2 is better. Why? Because Neo (and us) don't have to spend 1/2 the movie figuring it out plus there's a 30 minute non-stop action sequence over multiple locations that is epic greatness

In the movie, the oracle. her name is sophia stewart. she wrote the matrix in her book "the 3rd eye". as well as the movie, the terminater with arnold swartznegger. Hollywood stole her idea and put these movies out. she sued and won a couple hundred million a few years ago.

No court said Sophia Stewart wrote the Matrix or Terminator. She didn't win anything. There is too much real shit going on to bother with lies. In April 2003, Sophia Stewart filed a legal complaint in the United States District Court for the Central District of California alleging that the idea of The Matrix (and the 1984 film The Terminator) were plagiarized from her own film treatment titled "The Third Eye". The court allowed the lawsuit to move forward in 2005, but Stewart did not attend the hearing. In a 53-page ruling, Judge Margaret Morrow dismissed the case, stating that Stewart and her attorneys "had not entered any evidence to bolster its key claims or demonstrated any striking similarity between her work and the accused directors' films."
