I cannot tell you just how electric opening night was for this movie. It was a truly amazing cultural moment. No one was ready for the plot and when the climax happened in the hallway, people cried when Neo died and then the theater just erupted in cheers. I was 10 years old and will never forget it. Same year my mom also took me out of school to see the South Park movie.

Once you know know it's Plato"s 'Cave' allegory in a modern action movie form, it loses the originality. Still a super cool film tho.

I worked nights when this came out. My ex-girlfriend(we were still good friends) came to my apartment and woke me up in the middle of the day to go see a matinee as she had seen it the night before and wanted to share it with someone ASAP. She worked in radio as a dj and doing news segments. She was really into movies. She knew the woman who held film screenings they had for the local movie critics and I could always go along if I wanted. This wasn't one of those, but it brought back those memories thinking about it. I wish they had been able to go with the humans being used as a neural network rather than the battery thing. I guess the studio thought no one would understand it. I rememer thinking how the battery thing didn't make any sense, but just accepting it. Switch was intended to have a different gender inside vs outside the matrix. That would have been so cool, but maybe the world wasn't ready for it. Ended up going with an androgynous character.

There arent a ton of Agents, just the same three(at least that we saw in this movie.) But all the humans not onboard the ship, that are in the matrix, are still plugged into the Machine AI. Which means the Agents can take over your existence whenever they need/want to. So like when Trinity shot the Agent on the roof during the Morpheus rescue attempt, the Agent left that human body and moved on to the next one, and left on the roof was the body of the helicopter pilot he took over and died while in control of.
@vorbis4860
@vorbis4860 5 ай бұрын
Yep, that's why they indiscriminately killed all the guards: because if they didn't, the guards could be taken over by agents who would then be right there. So those people they killed were actually plugged into their little pods, and they all actually died. Collateral damage...
@JakobBerry
@JakobBerry 5 ай бұрын
@@vorbis4860I don't quite agree about the guards. They killed them because otherwise they would have stopped them. Only way to get in. Unless the agents weren't aware that an attack was underway, I actually think it's a bit of a plot hole. An agent almost immediately jumped in to the helicopter pilot when they got the call. While Neo and Trinity were still fighting other guards on the roof. Agents would have had plenty of opportunity to jump in to one of the backup units in the lobby as soon as the call for backup went through.

But in the whole matrix world are much more Agents. You can see/read it in the Comics and Games.
@odditi8293
@odditi8293 5 ай бұрын
@@JakobBerry Alternative explanation, since Smith was disconnected while the lobby fight was happening, he was unaware and unable to give orders at the time. Seems unlikely that programs like the agents would act without orders, hence the other two come into the room with Smith and Morpheus asking what he is doing before engaging themselves.
@MarijnvdSterre
@MarijnvdSterre 5 ай бұрын
@@JakobBerry How I see it is that agents can only easily enter someone who is open to it at some level. They can enter everyone who is plugged in, but to enter someone who isn't open to it would take a bunch of hacking. So in the beginning of the movie, the reason that they call the police to wait and not just take their bodies over is that it is faster to drive there. Watching what was happening must have freaked the pilot out and made him open to the process.

One of the cleverest design decisions - when Neo is at work his suit is deliberately ill fitting, and all of the angles of his cubicle are slightly off. Gives that subtle feeling that he does not fit there and that something is wrong. I love when movies do that.

So I bet you in 1999, there were a bunch for 40s 50s year olds who never saw it, and now they’re likely in their 70s and never seen it still. Remember the "Deja Vu" bit? Well when this came out I went to see it with a bunch of friends and we were chattering about it as excitedly as you might imagine as we went home in the car. I was driving. On the way home, there were two road junctions that look very similar in the dark. When I came to the first junction, I thought it was the second one, so when I then came to the second one, I completely automatically said, "whoa, deja vu". And then everyone in the car instantly shut up, looked at each other, wide-eyed, and gulped. It was, as they say, a _moment_ ...😎

Kamilla - agents can move in and out of any program still “hardwired” to the system. People still in the matrix are programs as well. So there weren’t a lot of agents, they were just able to jump from person to person. Remember when Trinity shot that agent in the head on the roof, then his body turned back into the original guy? This was my favorite movie of all time for a long time. I saw it in the theaters 4 times, and I almost never go to the movies. They did such a great job of advancing the technology of movie making, without distracting from the story telling. Never feels like over 2hrs to me.

@@Centane It's totally fine! I think what I liked so much about this movie is that I connected with it early on; faster than all of my friends. As soon as I saw bald Neo in the bed of fluid connected to those hoses, I got it. I feel that it's such a great parallel to the spirit realm and how it connects to the physical realm. We as spirits walking around this Matrix in our Earth Suits (bodies), while reality is elsewhere. Funny, there is a verse in the Bible that refers to the "Matrix" of the womb. I wonder if that's where they got the name from. Oh, btw, I have considering learning Arabic on Babbel, as it is literally in my blood.

@@Centane The Matrix is a huge computer game designed to distract humans, so think of it that way: every person inside is a player in the game (who doesn't realize they're in the game), but the Agents are NPCs who have more powers than the players and can take over other players' characters. Neo and his friends are slightly more powerful than other players, but less powerful than the Agents, because they've hacked into the game and enhanced their character's powers with the "cheat codes" they learned with the training simulations.

The thing is that about 2 decades back I watched the movie on my first modern computer, one with a DVD drive (which was amazing back then). Most computers even werent able to handle things like this back then. I watched the Matrix movie with a friend in the late evening. After we finished, he went home. But when I returned to my computer and tried to close the Power DVD software, my computer suddenly powered off (like Neos computer in the white rabbit scene). That was very strange, because the computer worked flawless until that very moment. After I powered on the computer again, my standard Bios screen was gone and I had cryptic green characters everywhere. Then it loaded windows and the whole screen was filled with random mostly green gibberish (but rarely also other colors). I was kind of shocked, I even thought for a while: "is that film real, is it happening now?". Even it havent looked exactly like the matrix green latters, it still reminded me of the green matrix letters, also it happend directly after that movie and I was young and it was late in the evening. It was kind of mind blowing. It happend again and again every time I turned on the computer, even it sometimes looked slightly different. What happend: my graphics card just died in that moment and had to be replaced (some capacitators of my Voodoo 3 graphics card, a known problem). The thing is, about 10 years later I had a very similar problem with another graphics card that died in a notebook. - This time I even took a picture, so that people would believe me my story and dont just think that I made all this up...

It's hard to tell you how important this movie was, just in a general sense. It was the dawn of the internet as we know it now (2023), but the story drew on ideas that have been around since the golden age of science fiction. It is inevitable. And that's *just* the story. The Wachoskis invented a whole new way of filming, embraced the meta, and really just revolutionized movie storytelling.

You should definitely watch "The Wizard of Oz." Sure, it was released in 1939, which was a long time ago, but it holds up pretty well. All older cinema / TV are like stage plays, that's all. I think you would also enjoy "V for Vendetta," which features an actor from "The Matrix" in a starring role. It's excellent. As for the sequels to "The Matrix," IMO they're not that significant. The story they intended to tell was in the first movie, and the rest is just them pumping the success of the first movie for more money.

"Even an old woman chopping up vegetables is an Agent?" No. As Morpheus explained earlier, the Agents can move into and out of any software still hardwired into their system. In other words, any humans that are part of the Matrix can have their representation taken over by an Agent. Essentially, one of the three Agents took over that woman's representation in the Matrix.

I should have put in my original post: This is why Switch is pointing a gun at Neo when Neo first gets into the car with Trinity (and Apoc driving). "It's for our protection . . .from you." What they're concerned about is that Neo could "become" an agent.

Morpheus explained in the beginning that everyone that is still plugged into the Matrix are likely to be _"Commandeered"_ away by an agent, it's similar to how a cop can just take a person's car in pursuit of a suspect/criminal. So agents can Commandeer people in the Matrix, and if it ends in the agent being defeated/dying, that means the person they took over also died.

The key to these movies is the philosophy that they are using to make the story. I happened to be in a philosophy class before this movie came out and we use to watch Total Recall when we discussed the nature of what is real and what reality actually is. I remember when this movie came out we went with our philosophy teacher and he said the movie that he will show every year has now changed. Each movie is based on a different movement in philosophy. This one is very much about the nature of reality. Is it what we see or is what we see an illusion? The Wachowski's were really on to something at the same time dealing with their own struggles with what they were in the real world before coming to terms with who they were as people. These movies were very very deep.

There’s part of the script that alludes to why Cypher wants to be reinserted to The Matrix & why he’s lost faith in Morpheus. Sadly the scene was trimmed down for the theatrical cut, but the missing dialogue is below. CYPHER: I'm going to let you in on a little secret here. Now don't tell him I told you this, but this ain't the first time Morpheus thought he found The One. Neo: Really? Cypher: You bet your ass. It keeps him going. Maybe it keeps all of us going. NEO: How many were there? CYPHER: Five. Since I've been here. NEO: What happened to them? CYPHER: Dead. All dead. Neo: How? CYPHER: Honestly. Morpheus. He got them all amped up believing in bullshit. I watched each of them take on an Agent and I watched each of them die. Little piece of advice: you see an Agent, you do what we do; run. Run your ass off. Did you notice how many spoons are laid out in front of ‘Spoon Boy’? There were five bent spoons & he hands Neo the sixth. This will link into something that’s mentioned in the next two films, regarding The Matrix itself, as well as Neo. Also, it’s worth watching the Animatrix; especially The Second Renaissance Pt 1&2; which explains the rise of AI & the war against humanity. It’d make such a good prequel!!

@@RandomBros88 You’re welcome. It would’ve made for a much more interesting scene that what we got in the theatrical cut; although, it could’ve lead to viewers seeing Morpheus in a totally different way. But I love the fact that the spoons represent the previous ‘chosen ones’. It certainly adds more weight to what he says…. “Do not try and bend the spoon, that's impossible. Instead, only try to realize the truth… there is no spoon. Then you'll see that it is not the spoon that bends, it is only yourself”.

Brief explanation of the Agents: The Agents are just bits of code wothin the Matrix. The three in this movie are named Smith, Brown, and Jones. How they work is that they basically attach themselves to people who are still plugged into the system. Nobody _is_ an Agent, but an Agent can take over control of anyone in the system. In the next movie, you'll meet three new Agents: Jackson, Johnson, and Thompson. One thing I love about this movie is the subtle world building details that you don't notice the first time you watch, but you see the swcond time around. Like when Switch calls Neo "Coppertop," a nickname for the Duracell battery, and a reflection of plugged-in humans' status as a power source for the machines.

Cypher gives the insight to how they understand what is going on around inside the matrix. When he says he no longer sees code, just different women by hair color. Since the Matrix is a program, a complicated one, it still needs code to represent every function and describe how to render everything. So if you understand the code for colors, body type, male/female, height, weight, hair, different clothing, various actions humans make, buildings, different floors, windows, all that... you are basically watching a computer game, and relaying the information to someone inside the program.

When Morpheus asked if that's air Neo was breathing, he meant that Neo was still setting limits as per the real world. In the real world, the conditions make it difficult for you to do physical things. But since you're in a computer program that's fooling you and you know it's not real and thereby limited only to your imagination, you can push yourself beyond the normal human limitations. For Neo, as the One, he has complete control over the Matrix and it's many facets, which also include gravity, hence his ability to fly.

It was shot largely around Sydney - helicopters over the city film shots for several days. The gun fight on the roof was my old office - and I was working at a client a few hundred metres away - an investment bank - when they shot the scene where Neo first moves like an agent. But there wasn't much warning to the city. I was interviewing someone when just over his shoulder 0- in my direct line of sight - this massive gunfight with full automatic weapons broke out with no warning and the whole floor stopped to watch - blue flame jumping 1-2 feet out of machine pistols for 30 - 60 seconds before the penny dropped; no gun fight with that much firepower would go on for that long without people running away. Someone said "Oh the Matrix" and we were all enthralled - for the next 20 - 30 minutes. It was incredible - and surreal - to watch it up close!
