The last time I saw this, it suddenly occurred to me that this scene is set up to make you think Morpheus might be the villain after all. The way the lightning flashes as he turns around. The diabolical grin on his face as Neo takes the pill, while the lightning flashes yet again. They were trying to make people think Neo was making a mistake, and when the movie first came out I bet it worked on a lot of people!

It's not even that he's the villain although it could be interpreted that way; but it's certainly foreshadowing. The smile of him being happy for neo even though it is a deep and dark rabbit hole he is entering. Grim and horrid, but still the truth. I can see why someone such as Cypher was so upset about finding out, because he was not hinted towards the just how big of a decision he would be making, how harsh the reality is.

I like how this scene parallels someone going in to see a shrink. The mental prison, that Morpheus is talking about, is the patients codependency. Neo is a man who doesn't know who he is. That's why he accepts what he sees. He is given the chance to wake up and get in touch with his true identity, through this "red pill". The interesting thing is that Neo is still in the Matrix. This is all in his head; which is symbolic for the mental strength he had to free himself in the first place.
