Even with the lousy acoustics and chatty audience, this is not his usual best. Perhaps as someone else said, they're standing "in reverse" of their usual places. Bad juju?

I agree Raul is good but Roy was STUPENDOUS! I agree he had perfect control, pitch and vibrato. If you listen to Roy on headphones you can hear how perfect his breath control was- no huffing in between notes!

I think it's unfair to compare Raul Malo with Roy Orbison. Undoubtedly Roy Orbison was the best pop singer of his generation, "his voice ranged from baritone to tenor, and music scholars have suggested that he had a three- or four-octave range" (Wikipedia), a fabulous balladeer and rock & roll singer combined, who wrote most of his own material. Raul Malo's rich tenor voice is the best in popular music since Roy Orbison in my opinion and whilst he can't quite match Orbison's high falsetto, he has a much wider repertoire. He also writes a lot of his own material. That said Orbison showed a different side to his style with The Traveling Wilburys. Not surprisingly, Malo quotes Orbison as one of his biggest influences “He’s an obvious one. You know, Roy Orbison was more influential for his songs for me than even his singing. And I don’t mean to discount his singing in any which way - he was certainly an influence. But it was really his songwriting that drew me in to Roy.” (Rolling Stone). But their singing styles are completely different. Roy Orbison had a strong but impassioned singing style; whereas Raul Malo has a seductive style that always seems much more laid back, nowhere more so than on this cruise. Can you just imagine being on a Caribbean cruise with the Mavericks! I bet Raul Malo could sing Abandon Ship and make it sound good. I love the way Raul puts his own twist on this classic, "youoooo".

This video was shot on a cruise ship outside on the pooldeck where people are having a party. The shows are free...so some are not there just for the music. Maybe that answers your question. BTW unfortunately there's no donut shop on the ship 😉
