The "Masterpiece" line is probably referencing a Jonathion Brandmeir song (Johny and the Leisure Suits) song where he refers to "flushing" a "Giant Masterpiece" referring to a bowel movement. Brandmeier's band was popular in Chicago around that time.

I think this would have freaked me out. Maybe not so much today, it's somehow more plausible that something like this could happen as a troll upon a TV station. Stuff like this exists on the internet, if you just look for it. But if I were watching TV late one night in 1987 and this suddenly broke through, I would have just about soiled myself. It's so very random. If they had hijacked the airwaves and delivered some sort of coherent message about the government, or some gripe, it would have been a bit startling. But the whole thing is absolutely bizarre. What the hell is happening?! It raises so many questions and provides no answers. Getting on the air like that was incredibly difficult back then, the fact that someone did so and ended up broadcasting something so freaky is worrying. This incident creeps me out every time I see it.

Employees of the station did it as a joke, though if their bosses found out they kept the identity of the employees a secret. Investigators believe that the equipment and knowledge required would've made it extremely difficult for an outsider to perform the signal hijacking.

I believe that the “real” Max Headroom is innocent of this federal crime. The actor who officially played Max Headroom was probably nowhere near Chicago at the time of the incident. He was also probably too busy looking for other legitimate acting roles. I believe that the “real” Max Headroom has an alibi for this that exonerates him.

What sort of equipment would a person need to hijack two broadcast signals? And could that equipment be easily manufactured with parts bought from a Radio Shack and mail order?

Investigators believe that station employees did it due to the equipment and technical knowledge required to perform the signal highjacking. But if they ever were caught or punished by their bosses, well, then the station must've covered it up out of embarrassment.

Also, the fact that the video makes a lot of references to the local media (esp. the Chuck Swirksy jab) suggests that the pranksters were a part of the local media scene.

@@ryanjacobson2508he fact that the perpetrators knew so much about the local Chicago media indicates that the perpetrators couldn’t be anyone who wasn’t localized to Chicago. That narrows down the search for the culprits significantly.

NinkyNonk500 /Max M-N Yeah! The clip he used there is of a Anti-Speeding Advert called Shame On You. That Ad was made by DOE Northern Ireland and I first found it while watching a clip from Spy Kids on KZbin. You see, it was the scene of the film (Spy Kids) where the dad was looking at a tv in the car where he saw a weird monster that looked like one of the dad’s Secret Agent Colleagues on the screen, not noticing that he was about to crash, but the clip was edited with the moment from the ad where the car crushes that group of children you see.

I am sure that it is not REAL MAX in that so-called incident... Incident real - Max, not so much! I honestly think that it was a group of hackers who just hacks the TV network and disturb the signal. (look - even the mas is not as original Max wears, voice and costume are all so wrong).

It couldn’t be the real Max Headroom. Matt Frewer wasn’t a native of Chicago at the time of the incident and he probably couldn’t have known about the local Chicago media scene. He also probably wouldn’t want to risk his career by involving himself in the commission of a federal crime if he knew that signal hijacking is a federal crime.
