One thing that always breaks my heart whenever I rewatch these films, is the fact Sonya and Newt are brother and sister. WCKD took away their memories. How many other family members are right next to each other, and they'd have no clue.

I think a cool detail is that Brenda said her brother's name was George and that WCKD took him. If you remember from the first movie when Thomas was being attacked by Ben in the Glade he comes across a grave. The grave said George on it and the name George was scratched out on the wall in the Glade. That was Brenda's brother. So she doesn't know what happened to him but we all know that we was put into the maze and died.

36:37 - None of them have been infected in the past. This disease (The Flare) is not the same thing as what a griever sting causes. The grievers had a “mutated” version of the flare, this allowed Ava Page to better control the symptoms. When they escaped the maze, they were all told that they had an immunity to “The Flare”, that is the reason they are truly shocked one of them got sick and died.

1:24:41 EXACTLY🤣 I say, for a hero going through the hero's journey, Thomas doesn't receive the call to adventure, he calls adventure and tells it he's coming for it^.^ For better or worse~~~ (Sad part, it's heavily implied that Thomas was one of, if not *the* , smartest kid in the trials or at least the most curious😅)

1:05:21 Thomas "stung" himself in the maze & they treated him with the "cure" that came up with Teresa, and he's not shown any signs of turning since~ Alby would've been the only other real example of whether an "immune" treated with that particular treatment would survive without more, but he died.

Thinking about how the movie series had progressed, I would've liked it better if Teresa and Thomas were siblings. It would have made sense how many times he'd forgive and trust her better than just "love".

I always thought they’d of made better siblings even in the books I couldn’t get behind them, Brenda always made more sense to me As a love interest. Apart from following the trend of putting triangles into teen dystopia, they did have a set of siblings in the main cast even though it wasn’t touched upon on the movies: Newt and Sonya

This is something i say every single time i discuss these movies/books. I absolutely agree with you, the story would have been improved if they were siblings instead of love interests. It would have been a breath of fresh air from the other ya movies that were getting famous at the time and it would also be an interesting dive into how people react diferently to the same trauma. Teresa changes sides because she remembers her mother ripping her eyes out, but if she was also Thomas' mother, it would show how trauma influences people in different ways, it would have been so cool.

In the book Teresa isn’t in it at all because they had boys & girls separate the whole time. Thomas & Brenda had better chemistry in the book. In the movie they changed a lot of the stuff. This one lady said that Teresa was such a Bitch. I was about to yell out saying “Read the book it’s better!” 🤣 They made her betray them to keep the series interesting. But in the books you do understand a better perspective that everything she did was for Thomas. Honestly I did prefer Thomas & Brenda as a pairing

The Flare (global pandemic) is different to the Griever’s sting (manufactured by WCKD). Kids stung in the Maze weren’t becoming crazy fungi zombies, they just remembered their pasts (and the horror of the real world) and/or went a bit mad in The Changing. The kids also think they are immune to The Flare based on Ava’s speech at the end of the first movie, but not all kids are immune and the “juice” 😂 harvested from them isn’t a one-time cure, it just helps stop the effects of The Flare for anyone affected. The Maze and other Trials were intended to increase the effectiveness of their… juice 😩 through fear and stress or whatever the logic was.

The reaction you two had at 6:36 to the name "Squiggy" had me laughing SO hard... I've got a cuddly microwavable beanie Pig called Squiggy, short for "Squishy Piggy", that I've had for about 9 years now (I'm 29). I literally take her everywhere with me, I genuinely struggle to sleep without her, and I talk to her about everything. Talking to Squiggy and cuddling her got me through a really traumatic time shortly after I got her, helped me through becoming disabled, and has really helped me through my darkest times with my depression, anxiety, and PTSD, when I had noone else to talk to. Being able to talk to her helped me not feel judged and allowed me to process my thoughts and feelings out loud without the fear of someone else knowing, interrupting, commenting, or telling. To me Squiggy is basically a comfort blanket, a diary, and a friend all rolled into one, if that makes sense. She's my most prized and cherished belonging, and although it seems silly I genuinely don't think I'd still be here without her. I laughed so hard at your reactions to the name "Squiggy" because it reminded me of how my family reacted when they found out i named my cuddly / beanie pig that, and everyone I've ever told always has that same reaction, which I find hilarious. Fantastic movie reaction btw :) keep up the good work xx

I am a HUGE fan of both these movie and the books. I love that these movies are much more morally grey than other YA dystopian series. The good guys aren't all good and the bad guys aren't all bad (except for janson). They each have pretty good reasons for doing what they're doing. Also i appreciate that the love story is not such a big plot point. I much more on the back burner. I also love that it's about found family. Like i know they didn't know Winston, Alby, or Chuck for long but they are all each other know. They have no memory of family or loved ones so it makes sense that they get attached quickly. Also yes the movies got further and further away from the books as time went on but honestly not in a bad way. The author was involved with all 3 movies and the director cared a lot about what he thought so almost all of the major plot points are the same. Just the way they got from plot point to plot point was different. Like everyone that was supposed to die died. Everyone that was supposed to live lived. The ending was the same. All the characters had the same arcs in the books. Even the author said that some of the changes were necessary because some things that work in books don't work in movies. So I absolutely love these movies despite the changes. Sorry for the paragraph lmao.

8:40 “In any other media, that kid would have been there months or years, but it’s a week” I think the reason it has been a week is because Thomas gave all the WCKD compound coordinates to the Right Arm Doctor (from the end of the movie), and then right after that WCKD tossed him in the maze, so it has only been about a week since WCKD had to start Phase 2 in order to get kids out of the mazes and away from the Right Arm? Since Thomas was in the maze a few days, maybe a week or more? Am I missing a detail there, anyone with better knowledge of the Maze Runner movie series?

39:10 So, my brother-in-law has had 2-3 lightning related close-calls. Which is funny cause he's an electrician~ Needless to say, whenever I need him to come look at something around our house, I tend to stay in the next room over while he works^.^ In his defense, tho, I don't think he's ever got a serious shock while working; he's just really unlucky with lightning~~~ It's like him and Zeus got beef, and Zeus waits until he lets his guard down😆

5:28 “Maybe you should have asked them before you killed them all” This line leads to a confusing conversation, not sure if you remember that Ava (lady in white) faked her death at the end so everything about the WCKD compound being invaded and shot up was fake, which Thomas doesn’t know but Littlefinger does.

I think it's a SPOILER, but in the books the whole point of the trials getting more insane is because Wicked could never synthesise a cure. They kept studying the blueprints of the mind's of the immune, but there was no implication of getting closer and The Flare already became airborne. The book leaves open the idea that Thomas could've been the only one (his mind reacts the best to the trials) actually capable of producing a cure, but we never find out for sure.

I love both the books and movies and really like how each part fits a slightly different genre, first mystery, second explore/adventure, last heist. They feel distinct, while having connected story expansion. The ensemble cast is so great. Every character has a little moment to shine, which is really cool. Everyone really executes their rolls incredibly well with the first two in particular. The romance is the weakest element.

Ya gotta remember, they’ve seen others stung by the grievers but they were exiled or given the cure (Alby, Thomas could be included but it was self inflicted) far before they fully turned. This is their first experience with cranks so they don’t know the extent of what they’re dealing with (because they’ve never seen the scorch). This may be different than in the books, since I haven’t read them, so correct me if I’m wrong.

In the books they had such an intense push and pull between Thomas, Brenda and Teresa lol. I still kinda liked Teresa in the books. They were in the desert for DAYYSSSS. So many cool things happened too that I was hoping to see in this movie. All 3 movies felt rushed. Wes Ball is an amazing director, but the books are WAY too nuanced to be a movie. There's a lot of timelapses that could have opted to be a GREAT tv show.

It's too bad they won't be finishing the trilogy. Their reactions were pretty good. Anyway ... We learn a number of things during "The Scorch Trials." We learn that the immunes can treat the Flare, but they can't cure it. The whole idea behind the Trials is to create something like engrams in the brain which would alter the brain's chemistry and so the enzyme which is used as a treatment. The idea is that if the right combination of engrams is produced through the Trials, which are complex and terrifying puzzles to solve, a cure might be found. It's the trilogy's McGuffin, so you can't read too much into it, however. When Thomas and the Gladers arrive at Jansen's facility, none of the immunes is a cure. At Jansen's facility, phase two begins. Phase two consists of virtual Trials which explains some of the headgear on the immunes. At the same time, the enzyme is being extracted directly from their brains. Presumably this is for efficacy testing as well as use in treatment. You were certainly right about Theresa. In our hero's adventure-journey, Theresa clearly represents the monomyth's temptress who tries to derail Thomas. She doesn't tempt Thomas with sex, but with arguments both logical and emotional advocating WCKD's viewpoint. It's reasonable to suspect her from the very beginning. Unlike Thomas, she completely broke the Glade's paradigm. Her arrival in the Glade is untimely, she's female, and she heralds the end of the Glade's supply lifeline. Totally inauspicious. Kaya Scodelario does a good job of making her character seem suspect from the get-go. There always seems to be a mistrust-invoking aura about her. In the "Scorch Trials," she tells Thomas "Everything was fine until you ...." This implies she never approved of what he'd done. Thomas' drug-induced dream-vision at Marcus' party makes it clear Theresa wasn't part of Thomas' betrayal of WCKD. Thomas obviously acted alone. The longer Theresa is in contact with Thomas through the first two films, the further she seems to move away from him. This begs the question of why Theresa was sent to the Glade. In the first film, Thomas himself even asks her if she's sure she doesn't remember more of her past life. Does he have some subconscious doubt about her? There are interesting parallels between Theresa and Thomas. Both Theresa and Thomas are betrayers. Which one is evil depends on your answer to the films' theme: Does the end justify means? They both want a cure for the Flare. However, Theresa/WCKD are ruthless in pursuit of a cure, willing to sacrifice however many immunes it takes. Thomas, on the other hand, is completely altruistic. He will sacrifice himself but not others. One wonders if after Thomas stung himself in the first film, he doesn't remember more than he lets on. He acts like he does. He seems to know why he was put into the Glade. Earlier, he told Newt and the others he didn't recognize Theresa, but we know he did. Very uncharacteristic of Thomas to lie. Does he have subconscious suspicions about Theresa and not want to give voice to them? Or is he afraid admitting he knows Theresa will make the Gladers more suspicious of him? In the second film, the purpose behind Thomas' questioning by Jansen may be to ascertain whether Thomas can be rehabilitated and brought back into the WCKD fold. Thomas clearly was a valued asset to WCKD before his fall from grace. If he'd passed Jansen's test, he would have had his memory completely restored like Theresa apparently did. After Theresa's memory is restored, it's increasingly clear Theresa approves of WCKD and its means. She even begins subtly showing disgust or animosity towards Thomas. Her reaction as she looked at the handheld radio at Jorge's hold sealed the deal. She is going to betray Thomas. The only question was under what circumstances, although you might assume it'll happen when the maximal harm will be done. In "Scorch Trials" we discover why Thomas was put into the Glade. He'd betrayed WCKD to the Right Arm. Specifically, he informed the Right Arm about the locations of all WCKD's facilities. Presumably, Thomas was sentenced to the Glade in lieu of immediate death because he was an immune, and WCKD didn't want to "waste" his death. In other words, the prospective trauma his death might cause the other Gladers which might enhance the efficacy of their anti-Flare enzyme. His WCKD tag readout at Jorge's did say "To be killed." On the other hand, since Thomas was the best and brightest of the immunes, WCKD may have hoped he'd serve as a catalyst for the Gladers and bring the experiment to completion. That's certainly what happened. So, they may have intended to send him to the Glade all along, and he just made it easier for them. That said, it's clear from what both Jansen and Ava Paige say in the second film that they want Thomas back in WCKD. He clearly was important before the Glade, and his importance to WCKD may have increased afterwards because he did successfully solve the maze. What does Ava Paige say at the end of the first film: "Thomas continues to surprise and impress. He may be the key." There's an especially interesting scene near the end of "Scorch Trials." WCKD has seized control of the Right Arm base because of Theresa's treachery and is ready to evacuate the immunes and kill the Right Arm personnel. Thomas, who had escaped, surrenders himself. This is really an act of desperation. He has a bomb, and he's trying to make a bargain with WCKD. He suspects WCKD wants him. This is confirmed by Jansen who says: "Where's Thomas?" He might not like Thomas at this point, but he wants him alive. Thomas threatens to blow himself up unless WCKD releases the immunes, but WCKD rejects his offer. Here's where Thomas being selfless to a fault has hoisted him onto the horns of a dilemma. If he kills himself, he accomplishes nothing. Yeah, he escapes WCKD, but he doesn't save the others. Saving the others is his goal. He doesn't care about himself. When the others indicate they are willing to die, too, to escape WCKD, Thomas has a tough choice to make. Does he kill them all. Again, yes, they escape WCKD, but Thomas really wants them to live and live free from WCKD. If he relents, then they are all under WCKD control. He doesn't want that, either. There is the dilemma. The choice should be the one that's the closest to the actual objective. That must be life, of a sort, under WCKD. While there's life, there's hope. But that doesn't seem to be the direction Thomas is inclining towards. It would have been a mistake for Thomas to kill them all. Theresa and Ava Paige plead with Thomas to relent. Ava Paige even tells him "Everything can go back to the way it was." In other words, Thomas can have his memory back and rejoin WCKD. She meant it, too, because Ava Paige was actually a foster mother for Thomas. The brutal killing of Mary by Jansen coupled with this counteroffer from Ava Paige, which may have tempted him, may be what was pushing Thomas towards blowing them all up. Fortunately, Jorge rescues Thomas from this dilemma. The tragic irony is that WCKD should have accepted Thomas' offer and let the other immunes go free. "Scorch Trials" is a very good sequel to "Maze Runner."

People get so skeeved out by Brenda saying Thomas reminds her of her brother, lol. Lots of women marry men who remind them of their fathers, so why is it weird? (Also popular theory that Brenda never did kiss Thomas, and that was just part of his "trip.")

You really don't understand why people are "skeeved out" by others being romantic and/or sexual with a person that makes them think of a family member? The incestuous overtones of these situations are "weird" to people.

@@tabithahallows6116 Yes, but also no. Fathers are meant to model positive traits that a little girl can recognize and seek out in the future father of HER children. It's not like a physical resemblance, just shared traits that she grew to value. In the case of Thomas and George, Brenda says that they both see the good in people. It's not like she was pretending he WAS George when they kissed, just her recognizing that the traits that make her love Thomas are the same ones that made her love George--optimism and morality.

@@ObserverAmanda But they aren't related. And there's no evidence that Brenda was thinking of her brother when she kissed Thomas (which would be weird AF), but just that she values the traits that the two have in common. It's just not weird to me, but kinda sweet? Idk. (For clarification, I know why people find pseudo-incestuous relationships weird, but I don't feel like Thomas and Brenda fit into that category.)

So glad you're continuing this franchise!! Watching your reaction I was able to enjoy the movie like the first time I saw it 😂😄 Also it's true, this trilogy put forward interesting and timeless moral struggles in a not black-and-white type of way. Looking forward to the Death Cure!
