In this video, Steve from BK Hockey shows us a drill to practice Connor McDavid's move he pulled on Morgan Rielly. We also walk 3 through warm-up drills to get our inside edge work ready for the McDavid move drill.

actually does a good job demonstrating that. of course it's not the same, speed, no defence etc, but you can see that's essentially the move. the breakdown at the end is the best. i've watched it myself about 30 times, and slowed it down to .25 speed. Connor goes to his right casually, heads up looking for help, then goes right hard (barely perceptible at speed) and you can see the D shift that way, but it's a decoy of course. and as soon as he goes hard right, he goes harder left and just goes. to be honest, the D does an amazing job, great skater to actually follow him around. i bet half the D in the league would have been totally undressed. this guy was BEAT, but he wasn't UNDRESSED at all. both amazing players.

I think a big part of this move succeeding is one thing you mentioned above. McDavid goes right just enough to get the Dman to shift his weight that direction, and most visibly, start a leg crossover. At that point the Dman is vulnerable to a hard cutback, and that's exactly what McDavid does. By the time the Dman shifts his weight back and follows, McDavid has a clear stride or two on him. The move also plays into a Dmans instinct to keep attackers to the outside to reduce their shooting angle. McDavid exploits that to create a wider path with a less sharp angle to the net anyhow. I suppose you defend against this by keeping your backwards speed up and letting McDavid have more room to the center of the ice. Then it's not so clear to McDavid that he can beat you to the outside. McDavid ends up closer to the net and in the center of the ice that way, but he's on his backhand, which would probably be preferable overall.

When you do the 1 foot with inside and outside edges you should start from a standstill and work on pulling your leg all the way in and extending it out for power. Simply rocking your foot back-and-forth may look like you're doing the drill but will provide little benefit. If you're starting out you should start with giant c inside and outside edges. (Never be afraid to fall)

I would try it on a basketball court to get a bit of muscle memory into that deceptive stutter step and the explosive change of direction.
