The MCK Racer
A beautiful design from the best of the best in FPV racing.
I’ve been thinking how someone could make a design with vertical arm locking plates in both directions between the sandwiched plates. There is the Typhon design of interlocking arms and lateral lock plates; and then there’s the 533 LSv2 with the plates along the pitch axis, both of which made quads fly better. Now this new design not just borrowed the advantages of these but improved upon them!
Most of the frames I used, and after extensive flying, the arms might start sliding back and forth ever so slightly due to abrasion from all the crashes, for example the screw holes of the arms might get wider. What’s more in this design is that there is now more surface area than ever on each arm to prevent it from sliding even after extensive flying. The extended hook arm design does have its difficulty in production, that is the accuracy of the CNC needs to be perfect. When I was building it, I needed to do quite a bit of grinding before being able to slot the arms in or I won’t be able to thread in the screws. What’s good is that once they’re in, the arms are tight af!
Stand-off distance remain the same as many quads out there at 20mm, making it easy to reuse some of the 3d printed camera and antenna mounts.
The frame includes aluminum stack screws and aluminum top plate screws ensuring minimum weight. (Trust me, these screws are not cheap).
Between the tip of the 5.1” props, there’s a ~4mm gap. There’s ample spacing between the camera mount and the props (~3mm) so there’s less chance of having props hitting stuff on light bends.
I just finished building it today and I sure didn’t wait to go fly it. I’ve talked to @mckfpv and he said he’s flown and tested more than 2000 packs lol. That’s prob close to how much I fly in a whole year if not more. What is in store now is the 3rd revision.
I’m not even sure if I should do any review videos coz I fly nowhere close to the top pilots, but I’m going to say that this quad flies noticeably better than my existing builds - more locked in, more responsive. It could be my tune, it could be my parts getting old, who knows. But if there’s someone to bet on it’s MCK who will prob build one of the best racing frames out there!
What I’m gonna do is in a week, I’ll come back to see if my early impression changes. There’s gonna be more crashes, more tune changes etc. I’m also gonna be building out the rest of my fleet!
