Great preview video, interested to understand how this now works without Wi-Fi. Do you need a smart phone or tablet to be in claose proximity to the charging case in order to access meater cloud from when you are away from home? The 1st gen meater block has this inbuilt and took care of this problem. Not sure how this new meater plus 2 handles this if there is no wifi access to begin with.

Thanks for asking this. To be 100% clear the Meater plus still does not come with its own wifi signal like the block does which is why I opted for the block in Gen 1. This like before is wifi enabled when using your own spare device like a tablet or phone that acts as the wifi repeater vs it being built in. This is why I listed the block missing as one of my nearly perfect items as this still looks to be a feature that will live exclusively with the block

The meater 2 plus is the same. It can connect to an external wifi device (phone/tablet) through Bluetooth and uses that device to connect to meater cloud. I'm sure just a matter of time before they have a meater 2 block as well....

Like you say not everyone needs 4 probes and can justify spending 4 or 5 hundred dollars for a meat thermometer. Meater should come out with an expandable type system that would be WiFi capable. The base model would come with 1 probe with the option of being able to purchase a 2nd probe later if needed, and perhaps a base price in the $225-$250 range.

The increase in the ambient temperature limit is sufficient to sell me. When I reverse sear a steak I use a small grate and put it directly on the coals. I then insert Meater before finishing the cook. One time I inadvertently touched the grate while inserting the probe. I don't know exactly the temperature of the grate after it was in the air for a few seconds but 400+ degrees F might be a good estimate. It glows bright red when I first remove it from the coals. The damage to my thumb was a bit painful. Thanks for this review as I don't think I would have learned this fact another way.

Great video, I'm one of the (few) people who actually don't like Meater at all, connectivity never seems to work for me on any device but primarily the quality of the probes I find atrocious, I bought a block and 2 out of 4 probes broke within a year and then the block itself stopped working and the whole thing ended up in recycling. This certainly look better, but I'm still vary abiutbrhe quality of this brand...

I want Meater to allow me the option of seeing the ambient temp all the time instead of blanking it out when the ambient temp is less than the internal temp when resting/holding. This has been my biggest gripe with my original Meater Plus. I don't have a fancy warmer that gets down lower than the min 170F my home oven does, so if I am resting/holding in an oven or cooler or something and I am trying to maintain internal temp greater than 140F, I want to be able to monitor the ambient throughout the whole rest (which could be a long time if I want to cook overnight in a pellet smoker and hold all day till dinner) and I wind up having to use a separate wired probe. With the extended battery life on the 2 Plus, that could open the possibility of monitoring long holds. Seems like something that could easily be fixed with a software update to the app, as I assume it is not a hardware limitation? Give me that and the ability to not need a separate device to monitor when I leave my house via Meater Cloud and you can shut up and take my money.

@@gg80108 They aren’t really issues, but more so limitations. I wish they were waterproof, would allow me to use it in more ways. They aren’t dishwasher safe (which isn’t really the biggest deal). You can’t sear with them and you have to be careful with open fire cooking on the Joetisserie as it can easily get past the maximum cooking temperatures. The thinner the probes the smaller the hole left behind in the meat (not the biggest deal). Battery life and charging apparently improved a lot on the new model. You can still be perfectly happy with the Meater Block, it’s just the improvements on the next gen ones are definitely convenient.

Reset MEATER Here are some instructions that they sent me to try it sounds like your probes may be paired directly to your phone rather than your Block. May I ask you to try the following steps to reset your MEATER Block? We recommend unpairing the Block from the app before trying these steps, but it's not required Turn off Bluetooth on our smart device. Make sure all 4 of the probes are docked in the Block. Start the Block in Standalone Mode. Hold down the Settings button (the gear icon) for 10-15 seconds until the "Erase All Settings?" notification appears, and select "Yes." Start your Block in Standalone Mode again, and wait for the check mark to appear next to all 4 probes. Enable Bluetooth on your smart device, then start the Block in WiFi Mode to connect to the app.

Love your channel - I am definitely looking at the Meater 2 plus for doing rotisserie in the egg/kamado. Could you do a test where you do a boneless leg of lamb on the rotisserie? Also, not so much for the Meater but for leg of lamb on the rotisserie - I have two questions I am trying to answer and may take some trial and error. The first is I really love lamb with a rosemary/pistachio crust. Can you do that on the rotisserie without it falling off? Second question, I am getting boneless leg of lamb from costco, and when you open it up, from the deboning, it is almost a flat roll of meat. Have you tried or could you try going ahead with a knife and butterflying out the leg of lamb to be a more or less uniform flat piece of meat (say 1" thick) and put some sort of filling in it (say rosemary/pistachio or I could also see going dried fruit and nuts) and then roll it, tie it, either just season or do a crust on the outside and then put the rotisserie spike through the center of that? I am not sure if either of those would work on the rotisserie but would love to see if you could do it. Also I think either way would be a great test for the Meater 2 plus. Thank you again for the great videos!

I tried the MeatStick and really disliked it. The app requires you to manage Location Services manually which is crazy. My biggest gripe was I had a 50-50 chance that the app would recognize it. So I got the Combustion probe and it's really great. I really like the external display. I'm usually close to my grill and it's nice to glance at it. The app needs to mature, but I'll bet it will. I also like that it is rechargeable via a USB-C connector. But if I had seen this review I probably would have got the new Meater. Here's a nitpick for you... The calibration is not "ISO certified". Apption Labs is certified to the ISO 17025 standard for calibration labs. ISO 17025 certification gives you assurance that if XYX Labs provides a calibration certificate that you can have confidence in their results. The probe itself is not ISO certified. It is Apption Labs certified.

thanks for clarifying the ISO. Can't go wrong with the HW on Combustion which is why I had it second place... it was the best HW in my test earlier this year. But... they said they would have wifi within the month of my test and its still not out so there are a few small team gaps holding back the app from being as good on the SW as it is on the HW ... but by no means get rid of it or something. Its slick

I don’t understand why you aren’t including the chefiq thermometer in your head to head. It is the only one with true Wi-Fi and unlimited range. MEATER and others have to address this before they can compete

Still torn between this and the combustion
@SmokingDadBBQ
@SmokingDadBBQ 10 ай бұрын
the combustion has 8 sensors and is 0.1mm thinner... i was told WIFI was going to be added by August and its still not out and the App does what it says (predictive) but is more limited in terms of functionality. its wonderful hardware and why I placed it second in my test... but i haven't seen them address the gaps yet. for me the block with this probe would be what i would personally want to upgrade too should it come out

James, that is correct that Combustion still does not have wifi and have recently stated its now coming this Fall. I did buy their product and their hardware is awesome and have been happy with it. Seeing your video today, I would be torn as to which I would buy. Note I have had no Bluetooth lost connections as I have their display as a repeater connecting to my phone, but wifi would be nice.

Love the content, but honestly, I’m not impressed with Meater. I bought their original probe after it came out. Used it maybe 10-15 times over the years (few times a year). Made sure to remove the batteries since I didn’t use it often so they didn’t corrode. Went to use it earlier this year and nothing. New batteries and nothing. Wouldn’t work at all. So 120$ for a product to last 15 cooks, I wasn’t impressed. Maybe I just got a dud, but throwing 120$ in the garbage hurts…

Bad analogy for tires. Think of speed ratings for tires this way... an axle is rated for 3000 lbs and you have axle loads of 3000 lbs from time to time. A 5000 lb axle will do you better. Capiche?

ok I like my current meater + stick but not enough to spend another 100.00 to get another probe. a ambient temperature thing is a big deal. I wish they would have done a plug in charger rather than a stinking battery charger
@SmokingDadBBQ
@SmokingDadBBQ 10 ай бұрын
I am personally waiting for the block to get true out of the box wifi like the current generation block has. I am told, can’t confirm since it’s only been here a few weeks is the battery efficiency is way better so the batteries that you add now can recharge the probe for up to two years before needing to be replaced which in theory should make this a little less of a pet peeve

The functionality of the Meater plus is very good but the quality of the charger is very bad. Stopped completely after using is for only 22 time’s. After contacting support I did some test with them there conclusion was that it was broken and I had to pay for a new one because I did use it for more the 2 years even I did only use is 22 times which was registered on my account. So hardware quality for such expensive thermometer is not as expected.
@mikesaladino9472
@mikesaladino9472 10 ай бұрын
James, you probably need to clarify the wifi capabilities of this. The real reason you bought the block is to solve @MEATER bullshit wifi challenges. Im not sure about you but no one has an extra phone or tablet just laying around to connect this to wifi. They should have made the case for the probe a little larger and charged a bit more to actually let it have wifi. So I agree with you they solved a lot of problems. But left one big lingering issue, rendering this almost pointless to purchase if you already have a block.
@SmokingDadBBQ
@SmokingDadBBQ 10 ай бұрын
100%, pinned a comment as in hindsight i should have repeated my previous frustration on clarifying WIFI expectations vs. reality. This does NOT have built in WIFI like the block and still needs a daisy chain of devices to get WIFI second hand

Your tire salesperson was useless. A speed rating provides benefits at lower speeds than the maximum rating. A tire with a 180kph rating and a tire with a 210kph rating will react very differently at 100kph.

Really disappointing there's no wifi in the station or a temp readout. I hope the new bluetooth standard will enable better range because it's a big issue using in a stainless steel smoker. with wifi in the charger it coulg get the signal from the probe and then i'd have range thrououth the home. Instead I have to leave my phone close to the charger and use cloud to monitor from other devices.I'd kill for some basic functionality on the station like setting/previewing target temp etc. And wifi. Especially nowadays that wifi connectivity is extremely cheap and for things like this power efficient. I don't care for 5 temp sensors as it was good enough on the old one.
