Throughout the last few years, F2's status as being the next step to F1 has been called in to question for many reasons. One of these reasons is what we are going to talk about in this video, given that the issue has been more exposed compared to previous seasons. In this video, we will go through the issue in question and why this is apparently happening.
Shoutout to F1-Duck for bringing this issue up first on KZbin.

F2 is in a horrible position right now. The engines are a mess and the progression into F1 has started to stagnate over the past few years. Bearman and Antontelli are fortunate their with big teams that supply others on the grid, as well as a number of veterans and backmarkers seemingly leaving. But it's cyclical and unfortunately, we'll no doubt end up with more seasons of top 5 drivers ending up with no seat unless theres a lucky opening.

F1, FOM and FIA don't help with this situation either by keeping the teams strictly 10 and the cosst of current teams and cost of creating a new team being overblown due to inflation, "popularity", etc. Will the new regs help? Nobody knows.

The progression is absolutely useless. The last 2 winners can't get seats yet you've got Bearman sitting 15th with a Haas seat and Antonelli in 7th expected to end up at Merc. The field is stacked with talent (IMO practically anyone in the top 15 could be an F1 driver) yet I'd be surprised if you saw any of them in F1 in the next 5 years.

Mecachrome haven't learned a major lesson from Engine Tuning 101: you can't slap a big turbo on a high-compression, high-revving NA engine without significant modifications. The Mecachrome Turbo V6 was originally designed as an NA V6 for the global F3 championship, back when F2 ran a 4-litre NA Mecachrome V8 until 2017. The switch to the Turbo V6 was to bring it to increased relevancy with F1, so Mecachrome decided to cut corners and turbo their F3 V6 instead of designing a new/updated engine that can take the boost. They need to either thoroughly redesign the whole engine, replace it with a bespoke, more reliable unit, or step aside from F2 to let another engine supplier like AER, Pipo Moteurs, etc., take over.
@motorsportfanboy7769
@motorsportfanboy7769 2 ай бұрын
Sadly, what you said in the second paragraph is unlikely to happen (with what JW already said) as long as Michel stays due to his strong connections to Mecachrome. So the only way Mecachrome can go is if Michel isn't CEO anymore and that'll cause the company to leave too as they'll have no one in their corner.

The issue with the engines is simple: The turbocharging. F3 also uses a 3.4L V6, but the F3 engine is a non-turbo, and actually forms the basis for the F2 engine. Depending on who's talking, somewhere between 70-90% of the internals are unchanged. The F2 versions simply can't handle the increased power from the turbos reliably. Mecachrome is absolutely capable of making a reliable engine - the F3 engines are solid, and their old GP2 V8s were also very good. They simply cheaped out on the F2 turbo engine and refuse to fix it.

Hey, thanks for the mention mate 🤝🏽. I actually didn't knew that teams representatives are apparently called in Mecachrome's Factory for a draw to establish which engines they can use. If it's true, F2 is basically a farce and unfair to express drivers' level. I mean, it's not possible that Martins is usually far back the order as the Prema duo as well (I still think that also Prema can't still get the right set-up window with this new car spec). Also, now that it comes in my mind, about how F2 is controversial in the hands of Michel, I remember that back in late 2022, Amaury Cordeel signed with Infinity Management, which is partially owned by Michel as well. Casuality want that before the meeting Cordeel signed with this management, he was without any pt scored in the standings, but as he signed with this management, his performances started to become great and finished nearly 15th at the end of the year. I don't want to think it has been favouritism, but this makes you wonder also about how fair is F2 in general
@motorsportfanboy7769

Yeah the fact Cordeel had a huge jump all of a sudden to a front runner after the race ban and signing with that new management Michel owned, it's another proof on how rigged this series is.

Do you remember Pedro Piquet's comments after he left F2 in 2020? he basically said that he knew that drivers like Ilott only ran on used, old, underpowered engines and that highly backed drivers (Mick, Mazepin, Tsunoda) profitted by getting a new engine like every single race weekend. I guess it is still the same. Drivers like Verschoor are overperforming, but it is worth for nothing while Bearman, Hadjar or Antonelli get everything they need as it can be and will be provided for them

Cordeel's topspeed was similar to his teammate in those races, within 1 km/h, and VAR were generally in the midpack in terms of straight-line speed. I think the reason why Cordeel scored some good results was that he finally got properly focussed on the races, prepared himself better for the races than he did before, and that VAR got the car better set up near the end of the season.

@marktucker208
@marktucker208 2 ай бұрын
So there are a few points in this video that i disagree with but you are correct in calling out the reliability of the cars, even now they are still having too many problems and are too easy to stall. In respect of Bearmans result at Silverstone its worth remembering that he made up 3 places on the start and used the soft tyre which basically lasted for 2-3 laps before falling off a cliff. Then Prema had a slow stop. On top of this Premas race pace all year has been really poor so i think its too simple to say he had a worse engine than the others. I think its too easy to just say that engine disparity is why some teams/drivers are struggling, the new F2 car is a new setup concept for teams and drivers while tyre management seems to be at more of a premium this year than ever before (Just look at F2 at Hungaroring). The new car produces more downforce from ground effect and that requires a different setup concept than previous years and is a different way of driving from F3/F4 and/or previous F2 cars, it takes time to adapt and learn and some teams have learnt quicker than others. However there are many other performance factors that influence laptime in F2 though which teams have an influence on, you touched on setup which is correct but car preparation also plays a part. Of course all the teams have the same parts but not all the teams will service those parts or build them in the same way. For example one team might rebuild their dampers after every event while another might wait 2-3 events to save money, they might change wheel bearings every event or replace parts before they reach the recommended mileage for replacement. It all comes down to money at the end of the day. Setup of dampers and differentials are hugely complex and are quite open. You can have all sorts of combinations of (www.fia.com/sites/default/files/fia_2024_formula_2_technical_regulations_-_issue_2b.pdf section 9.3, 10.3) and naturally some teams and drivers will be able to find advantages there. Finally when you qualify back in the pack your car performance is naturally hampered through the turbulent air (its not as bad as F1 but it still exists) and equally as damaging is the hot air. The hot air will mean your brakes run hotter, tyres hotter, engine hotter etc. You guys already know it but i wanted to try and cover things fully so i dont want to seem like im explaining things that you already know. By far the biggest performance factor though are the tyres. You can see this weekend in Hungary for example that in practice the drivers were really just cruising around trying to manage the tyre to the point that they were barely faster than F3 times. Each team and driver will have their own way of achieving this and it stands to reason that some are going to be better than others. Finally i would just add that in previous years teams and drivers spoke out about mecachrome issues but this year i can only find one example of people doing this. (Campos after round 1,2). BTW to make it clear, i dont think you are wrong when you say that Mecachrome is a lottery i just dont think its as simple to say that driver performances are down to just that. While looking into info for my response i came across this reddit thread with some interesting information in it talking about the power spread between engines in F4 for example. - www.reddit.com/r/F1FeederSeries/comments/w6rbos/when_is_mecachrome_engines_getting_dumped/

If there is a significant disparity between engines, it makes the job of evaluating F2 drivers essentially impossible, a point already made in the video, undermining it's reason for being. The follow on question is why would a driver, or sponser, want to pay to race in such a series? If you previously had career momentum, that and your future career could be halted if you happened to be given a bad engine. Presuambly, this engine disparity may also explain why a driver in one team may "appear" to be stronger than their teammate which can be a real career killer. If Bearman had not had his Ferrari links and his one -off guest appearance in Saudi, I'm not sure any F1 aspirations would have survived this F2 season. Was this Mecachrome lottery responsible for the famed second ART seat curse? Prema's underwhelming 2022? I think I may have read that some drivers/teams are reluctant to call out this issue in case Mecachrome/Bruno Michel penalise them further for doing so. Does anyone have any indication of what F2 budgets are (Enzo Mucci in one of his videos mentions $2.3 million)? Why would you pay all of that money just to potentially lose at the engine casino, look poor in comparison to your rivals and kill your career? Or is this a non-issue?

Oh yeah, this is a HUGE problem. Not only in 2018 were there signs of it being faulty but from at least 2020, there's always someone getting screwed over BIG time. From Pedro Piquet saying Ilott have a crap engine at the end of that year to Lundgaard's second bad season to Marino Sato's deleted 7th engine tweet to Cordeel being all of a sudden a front runner after a race ban to Jack Doohan's difference in performance in the first & second half of last year, it again shows how huge this issue is (you forgot to add how Miyata said the difference of his and Maloney's engine performance at the post season test last year was around half a second, which is so big and that already vindicated me on how big the disparity is).
@MrSaltybloke
@MrSaltybloke 2 ай бұрын
I don't want to defend Mecachrome, but logically it would be impossible to guarantee the output of any number of engines be completely identical. I assume there is an acceptable delta, that everyone understands exists, although I'm not sure what the variance might be. Even a couple of percent difference would translate to lap time and I think any manufacturer might struggle to deliver a product that has less than 2% variance - for what teams might consider a reasonable price. Unfortunately that's the problem with any racing series that promises to standardise everything so that driver ability shines - it sounds great on the surface, but as you dig deeper engineering, politics and money limit what can be delivered in reality. A non-turbo version of this engine is supplied to f3 race teams - do the sames issues exist? They are definitely more reliable, but how close are they in terms of power output?

I noticed this in the first F2 season I watched. In the first half of 2020, Jehan Daruvala was doing really poor compared to his teammate despite being a title contender in F3 the year before. It got particularly bad in Spa where he was losing 0.7s on the Kemmel straight alone. They finally ended up changing his engine after that and you can see how much his results improved from Monza onwards. Needless to say, I did not keep up watching the feeder series a lot after that. Very dissapointing to hear that they haven't done shit about it.

And the sad thing is there’s people that treat this series like it’s flawless. They treat the standings like gospel. Mercedes dropped Aron despite a good F3 year and a great start to F2, Red Bull retained Hadjar despite poor results last year, Bearman has been promoted to F1 despite poor results this year. What do all these teams have in common with one another about their drivers? Data. They can see that F2 should be taken with a pinch of salt due to the lottery of who gets what. So they use the data of their academy drivers to judge whether they should be kept or not. Because data of how good they’re performing in F1 cars gives teams a better idea of how they’d perform in F1 than what results in a fugazi F2 series would. Crazy concept I know And it’s not just the engines that have a massive disparity either and are randomly allocated. The chassis are as well. What I’ll say is treat the series as any other series you watch for entertainment purposes. Do not treat it as watching the stars of F1s future fighting it out in equal machinery because it simply isn’t true

yea what you've read just doesn't even make sense every new built engine would have been on the dyno it would be complete insanity to not even do that. one thing ive always seen go on the f2 engine in the turbo so do i point the fingers at f2 for having that as a supplier still, mechacrome for using it, the dutch turbo company for building something inconsistent, is it even inconsistent or is it being over stretched, Teos engineering is apparently in charge of the rebuilds so are they doing it good enough or are f2 teams saving money by not getting them rebuilt at regular enough intervals. its good to hear the random draw though because ive always wondered about that random draws are always a good thing. but i dont think this is a mechacrome problem its way wider than that but someone does have to own up to it as for the programming being off, yeah thats kinda understandable unfortunately especially a LC program. as for f2, there was another category called f2 back when gp2 was around i think palmer was involved and the cars were made by williams

Man, even though this year of Formula 2 is super competitive, it is such a shame it has been going downhill lately. It was so good during the 2018-2023 seasons despite the bad luck some of the drivers got with the engine but I have been seeing a couple of videos on this Meccachrome engine potentially affecting F2 as a fair spec series now: F1Duck's video and yours. I hope I am wrong, I hope you are wrong and I hope everyone worried about the legitimacy of F2 are also wrong because I do enjoy Formula 2 and I found it awesome that this series was down to the driver's talent rather than the car (since most of the teams are as equal as they can get). However, I'm noticing more and more the amount of drivers who raced in F2 in previous years that could have been championship contenders if their engine was more reliable. Think of Jehan Daruvala in 2020, Theo Pourchaire in 2022, Liam Lawson in 2022, Christian Lunguuard in 2021, Felipe Drugovich in 2021, Callum Illott in 2020 (as exposed by Pedro Piquet if I'm not mistaken), etc. It is odd that it more people are worried this year now that the new Dallara car is being used and because Prema absolutely stink this year in terms of performance compared to other teams. Makes you wonder, doesn't it. Anyway, great video Joseph. Sort of had to be talked about at some point. 👍 If what you said about the engine is proven to be true later down the line, that isn't good news for the FIA and Bruno.

Peugeot and alpine renault facilty in verey and mecachrome are all valid examples of french engine makers that produce sub par engines....even citroen in WRC used to have some engine issues

@@amp888 no, that wasn't success from the engine....that was success because the chassis and aero compensated for the lack of performance from the Renault engines, the only time they had decent engines was with Rothamns Williams, and even that was more the chassis and suspension than engine power....look at Mercedes 8 straight titles, ask anyone why they one so many....and most will tell you the engine was ungodly....yes the aero and chassis was brilliant but we all know it was engine At the end of the day its a whole package, and in this case the chassis and aero can't do anything as its spec series components......so its engine issues

It sounds like when you say engine disparity you’re explaining issues with spec racing. In this case, it looks like they gave the contract to too small of a company. There has to be an engine supplier who can handle that volume with consistency. I have other problems with f2, like the champion gets banned for winning and is usually screwed because there’s no f1 seats available.

engines are made of 100's of different pieces that waer differently enough you coulnd't easily swap parts between even another engine from the same run. with that in mind here is no way to garuntee without beddng in and dyno testing and limiting the ones that over perform before they give the engies to the teams. thats a LOT of wear before the teas would get it. and only real way to keep it fiar as you suggest would be a new engine every race for all the teams which really isn't viable. as for the random, how else would you garnutee fairness in engine allocation, if Mecachrome have no say over who gets what engine they can't be accused of passing team A a shit engine purposfully or saving the good one for team B

The issue with that is that wealth is not equal amongst all nations, nor is an interest in Motorsport. F2 should be as meritorious as possible, not a money race.

I don't like Mechachrome. Most of champions even tho they deserve the title but there were little competition for the lead because of it. Last year we could have 7 contender, but we got only two because of shitty enginies.

Victor Martins, Antonelli, Bearman, and many more would've had much more competitive seasons if it wasnt for this issue. Even the likes of pepe marti, zak osullivan, or miata, theres no way they coukdve adapted to F2 so badly, the unequal engine theory is making a lot more sense as the season unfolds.

While also failing to show that this season is by far the most similar to a spec series than any season before as midseason now all the teams already have a win or multiple podiums.
