What I don't understand is why is mechanical keyboards mostly popular in gaming culture. I am a developer and I spend most of my time typing code, I would like a good mechanical keyboard which doesn't come with all the backlit lights, interchangeable key caps, custom switches combination and software gimmicks, and a pretty reasonable price.

Mechanical keyboards are mostly popular in gaming culture because when we start getting competitive and serious about our games, we want to go fast. FPS, MMO, MOBA, RTS games, all require very fast actions once the player is at higher levels.

SuchNerdy I agree. But why can't someone make a good mechanical keyboard primarily for developers or writers or anyone who types a lot.
@mellowtonin_
@mellowtonin_ 8 жыл бұрын
Anjith Sasindran Well, the majority of people who are interested in mechanical keyboards are gamers, so naturally companies will create keyboards with a gaming-esque style. r/mechanicalkeyboards is a really great way to find a budget non-led mechanical keyboard if you're looking for one! Just ask around, they're really helpful.

I got my Razer Blackwidow when I was 11, it was my first mechanical keyboard and I got them in Blue switches. Now my preference has changed a lot... Now that im 14 I have a Gon Nerd crystal TKL that came as a kit. I lubed the cherry mx clears and replaced the springs with Korean Gold plated 62g springs. I also replaced the keycaps with the hardest thing to ever find... White Jelly Pom keycaps. Its the most beautiful keyboard I have ever seen and my love for keyboards is infinite. Ive also been looking for the WhiteFox for a while to add to the collection... too bad I missed the drop. I might just get the Pok3r in clear switches if the white led restocks.

I'm really looking forward to get my first mechanical keyboard next week as the Roccat Sova is released. I only remember mechanical keyboards from school, old Cherry keyboards. They always looked old but felt rock solid all the time. And if you experience some really, really cheap and wobbly membrane keyboards you wish for a better feedback. As much as I like the small Xebec Tech HTPC, the keys just give horrible feedback. And I don't want such on a normal scale keyboard.

"A mechanical keyboard that is five years old will feel the same as a new one". Nope. Cherry switches lose friction over time, which makes them better.

I own a few mechanical keyboards, I also own a K65. As far as I know, it requires only one software to control the RGB lighting (at around 300 MB.) Although I do agree, I like those keyboards that change colors/patterns with the use of key combinations.

A mechanical keybard is great, although... The standard keyboard layout of today has a number of flaws: xahlee.info/kbd/keyboard_problems.html So get a mechanical ergonomic keyboard like an ErgoDox, ReDox (fork of previous), Gergo, Atreus, Iris, X-Bows, more: github.com/diimdeep/awesome-split-keyboards/blob/master/README.md And apart from just typing, why not use it for everything? Like using a terminal and a tiling window manager like i3 or dwm. A teminal may be scary, but applications for it are great. Ranger or nnn (file browser), cmus (music player), curl (fetch info from website for curl) and many more. More keyboard goodness. Luke Smith is a good example.

You can get a cheap chinese version of cherry mx switches. They are called Outemu switches. Personally Ive never used any of them before but they say the feel nice. For a budget mechanical keyboard I would recommend the MagicForce. Just search that up on amazon and they should be around 30-50$. If you like building keyboards I would recommend massdrop. Too bad I was late on the white fox :(
