When it comes to South Africa, the narrative often highlights its dangers. While there are areas to avoid, this isn't necessarily the case in tourist-centric locations!
Cape Town ranks among my top two favorite cities globally, thanks to its breathtaking natural beauty, countless activities, and affordability!
NATURAL BEAUTY:
You'll be surrounded by ocean and mountain views in all directions! Endless stretches of beaches await; most notably Clifton Beach and Camps Bay. Camps Bay resembles Miami's Ocean Drive but boasts even greater cleanliness and upscale ambiance! Luxury supercars, such as Lamborghini's and Aston Martin's, are a common sight throughout the city, especially in Camps Bay. Mercedes G-Wagons are as ubiquitous as Nissan Rogues, making quite an impression with the abundance of wealth on display.
ACTIVITIES:
Visit the penguins at Boulders Beach! We opted for an Uber ride from our Blouberstrand Airbnb, which totaled around $30 for a one-and-a-half-hour journey (one way). After enjoying the penguins, consider heading to Cape Town's southernmost point, the Cape of Good Hope. On your return journey to the city, be sure to take a scenic drive through Chapman's Peak. It's renowned as one of the most picturesque drives globally, reminiscent of my journey from Sorrento to Amalfi in Italy😍
Ride the cable car to the summit of Table Mountain for just $7 round trip, where you'll be treated to a breathtaking 360-degree panorama of Cape Town. Explore the vast expanse of the mountain's summit on foot, visit the gift store for souvenirs, and enjoy affordable food and drinks at the cafeteria. I purchased a bucket hat for $20 and noticed sweaters priced at $40. Refreshments were reasonably priced, with a beer costing $2 and water available for less than $1.
There are also other mountains like Lion's Head, and Signal Hill which are very popular for people to catch the amazing sunset.
Explore the V&A Waterfront for shopping or dining experiences. Discover a mix of high-end designer stores such as Gucci and Louis Vuitton, alongside popular brands like Nike and Zara. While dining may be slightly pricier compared to other locales, it's still significantly more affordable than American prices. For instance, at Harbour House, I enjoyed a Beef Fillet for $20. At On The Rocks, Beef Fillet cost $15. At 41 in Camps Bay, chicken curry cost $8. Whether you choose to indulge in upscale dining or opt for budget-friendly options, you can enjoy your meals without breaking the bank.
The nightlife scene was fantastic! Long Street is the place to be, with an amazing blend of Amapiano, Afrobeats, and hip-hop music. Entry set me back $5, but the drinks were very affordable. I bought a jack and coke for just $2, and beer is under $2. Tables were available for up to $50, but I found it more enjoyable to mingle with the crowd. I felt completely safe in the clubs and while walking the streets at night.
The Aquila Safari was priced at $200, which included transportation, a buffet, two glasses of wine, and water. It was an amazing experience, offering sightings of giraffes, lions, rhinos, elephants, baboons, zebras, and more. I regret not purchasing a shirt at the souvenir store, which was only $15.
Cage Diving !! Paragliding !! Rent scooters !! ATV's !! Bo-Kaap !! Literally anything and everything you can think of, Cape Town has it. Like I said earlier, it is cheap and safe. Your money will stretch much further here, than anywhere in America and most countries in Europe.
COST:
Flight: $860 from Boston.
Airbnb: $2,180 for 6 nights (split 7 ways). We found an Airbnb as cheap as $1200. Good hotels range from $50-$70 in Camps Bay.

Food and drinks are cheap. You can easily get plates of food for $6-$8. At an upscale, waterfront restaurant, you can get a steak for $15 - $20. Beer will be around $2, and mixed drinks will be around $4.
Uber is really cheap. From our Airbnb to the city center, it was around a 30-40 minute drive (one way). It cost us $12 (one way).
There are so many more things to do; we didn't even scratch the surface. We could have easily spent 2 weeks there, and did something new every day.
Safety is an issue in EVERY city in the world, whether it is New York, Los Angeles, Miami, Chicago, etc. Just stay in the touristy areas, and you'll be perfectly fine.
DO NOT LISTEN TO THE MEDIA; EXPERIENCE AFRICA FOR YOURSELF !
