The Medieval Secrets Of This Channel Island Fortress: Excavating Mont Orgueil In Jersey

The Team visit Jersey to investigate the origins of Mont Orgueil Castle: a fortress that came to symbolise the Channel Islands' bond with Britain.
The massive castle that dominates the shore today is a Tudor structure built on earlier foundations, and it's that early castle, built by King John, that the Team are looking for.
Unfortunately everything is built on top of a rock outcrop with the steepest sides the archaeologists have ever encountered, and they have to employ mountaineers to help get them and their equipment up the sheer slopes; it's not an excavation for the faint-hearted.
As the dig continues, shadows of that original castle are discovered and a story emerges of how Mont Orgueil came to symbolise Jersey and the Channel Islands' peculiar relationship with Britain and France.
It was fought over, lost and won back again for centuries, but the massive stone walls that the Team uncover ultimately proved futile against the might of gunpowder.

Mick: "But it isn't Roman..." Phil: " Call this a site? Where's all the crackin' bits of flint I expected to see"? Francis: "It probably has some ritual purpose." John: "So far the geophysics haven't given us anything other than what appears to be a dark smudge. It could be a wall, but is probably the natural rock, or it isn't". Stuart: "I know it looks like human activity, but those bloody moles get around everywhere".

I have the answer to all these questions: because it's what people expect. Patients walk into a doctor's office wanting a diagnosis and a cure in the form of highly touted pills put forth by the pharmaceutical companies who spend trillions of dollars making sure we take their drugs for the rest of our lives. I'm also a CCRN and I've seen stuff done by the medical industry that has literally taken someone who was only moderately ill with a problem that would be easily treated with a vacation and some decent sleep and kill them with medical treatment.

QBecause everyone involved in the team had weekday nine to five jobs, because these dogs are actually really expensive, and yes to add drama. The digs had pre episode scouting and preparation as well as post dig documentation and reset. It varied by site but was mostly just filling the holes back up. The reports of record as required by law were filed by and are available from Wessex archaeology. Which is where Matt and Phil work to this day coincidentally.

Ugh I cringe every single time Rony Stony Tony uses the word “we” a couple dozen times each episode whilst he helps not even a tiny minuscule bit. We we we and he’s helped dig a combined 2 to 3 minutes all episodes combined which is more than 200 episodes. His incessant whining about what he’s completely ignorant about is irritating aswell. Wonderful news that he’s not returning to the new show.

You do realize voluntarily watching it only to complain is the behavior of a childish git right?

The ancient moorish castles of Spain are indeed more beautiful, popular and advanced.
