I thought that at first too, but he isn't really paying for the bow, his viewers are, by listening to him drone on forever about an Android game, clocking the links to said game he pins as top comment, and don't forget the five other ads scattered through the video. So really, good on you and all the viewers that paid for that bow maybe, it was in fact a gentlemanly thing to do. Just pointing out, once you factor in all the Adverts and Sponsorships I can say he in no way paid for it himself.

@danielelliott420
@danielelliott420 3 жыл бұрын
@@morpheusgreene2704 You make a most excellent point my man, but to clarify I do not mean it that literally. Think more like "Oh I drank to much last night and today I'm paying for it" I reckoned in this case though he wanted more money, so as to afford the bow. Seemed to me that resulted in a Sponsorship, which is great for him, but seeing how it's his viewers are the ones forced to pay out the extra minutes, five at a time, seems kinda like we're the ones now "paying for it"... Metaphorically speaking of course. You are still right though. I was merely quite agitated after the 5+ min in the beginning of the video of him talking about a videogame, interrupted by an Ad then back to Sponsor Promotion, when I came to see a War Bow in action. While that may be acceptable for some, I have better things to do, you can learn or see a lot on KZbin in 5 min, or you can listen to him tell you how great an Android game is. I understand Adverts=Revenue, and we all gotta make that money, but the fact dude apparently can't make it on/choose between plugging sponsors in his video...As well as having 6 other classic Ads throughout less than 30 min is just plain amazing, and not in a good way at all. It did lose him at least one viewer and subscriber, which I'll admit probably doesn't matter to him anymore, but is still sad as I loved viewing his amazing craftsmanship. Still don't hate the guy but I can not agree with him chosing to promote Sponsors rather than accepting a gift from a fellow craftsman and then shamelessly promoting that guy instead. Which in contrast would have been nice, at least I would have still been hearing about Bows in a around about way. I do appreciate you hearing me out, as well as your thought provoking response. In fact I liked it so much I will modify it for my last remark. Imagine you go to see your Doctor for a specific purpose, now you know that a Dr. charging for services isn't odd, we all have to make money... But let's say you arrive, sit down in the waiting room, and this specific Doctor has decided to make the money to afford his new BMW by having the nurse come out and try to get you to sign up for a Timeshare before you're allowed to sign in... You came here to see a Doctor (Bow video), prepared to pay(watch ad's). But apparently the Doctor decided he wanted a BMW, and even though a dealership offered him one for free, and would have probably only wanted a poster in his office this man would prefer sell timeshare to his clients. Frustrating. Lastly Imagine that said Doctor allows himself to be called a "Gentleman" for said actions. Infuriating. A very Gent-Chad move indeed.

It really is apple and orange comparison. Armour is curved and hardened. The curvature not only redirects the energy in the arrow, but also reinforces the overall structure to make it tougher and harder to penetrate. If you watched the armour video, it clearly shows the arrow had a hard time imparting its energy into the armour without the tip breaking off or flying off to the side. On a side note, yes, thinner and smaller arrows will have good penetration profile. It's simply physics. You have higher pressure with less material to displace. That's why US Military adopted in using 5.56mm NATO, it simply penetrates armour better.

Man I love these bow vids! Interesting, Ian Sturges (boston bows) is making me a new bow too. Mine will be a 120lb but with unique dimensions to see how it effects arrow flight. Something I've noticed that effects arrow penetration a lot is actually the diameter of the arrow and arrowhead. Could your new 170lb bow launcher shoot one of the modern arrows? I'd love to see the comparison. Thanks for the mention of my last vid, it's a really interesting and fun area to experiment in.

Indeed, I think Joerg is pushing that boundary now, not there yet though - this thing is pretty damn neat. However get much larger or more powerful and it becomes IMO more efficient to build a proper small balista on a few fronts - it will be too heavy to draw often (even for the trained troops), much harder to move (Small balista of the Roman era at least break down in pretty portable leg and bolt thrower sections), still won't hit as hard as the balista and the biggest one for practical purposes is the ammunition. Arrows are relatively delicate and large, so it should be easier to carry more Balista bolts on campaign.

@FoldiOne Papyrus well tbf I don't think this one was made with the intention of actually being a warfare weapon in the first place, unlike the Instant Legolas, but rather more of a training wheel almost to allow ppl to draw a heavier weight than normally (Partly seen in the how "flimsy"(for lack of a better word) it is compared to the rest of the stuff he made)

I mean these are incredibly powerful weapon because of modern physics and everything but I don't think they'll do very much against medieval plate armor though. There's a lot of things wrong with that used to play for a sheet of Steel oh, for one we don't know what kind of Steel it is if it's plain mild steel Ruben plain high carbon steel because medieval armor was almost always heat-treated. In top of that the curvatures and the slopes of the armor not only added strength without making it thicker it also give the ability for weapons to less likely "grip" & "dig in" the armor which makes it more likely to deflect. And at the top of all that forged metal is going to be a lot stronger than a stamp sheet. So I put my money in a proper made plate armor vs those weapons.

The issue with a thinner arrow is that, well, the arrow would break apart from the forces applied. You can't use too small an arrow because it'll shatter from the force applied, possibly even before it clears the bow itself. That's why there's arrows with different weights and thicknesses; to allow each bow to have the right delivery medium. Now, if we were to modernize and use metallic arrows, that would change things quite significantly.

Obviously it wouldn't be 100% deadly, but a modern bow/crossbow definitely has the edge over a longbow because of a couple of things: - the projectile is thinner and has therefore better penetration - it is also lighter so, given the same energy, it travels faster compared to a heavier bolt - a modern bow has less and lighter moving parts, so it is more efficient than a warbow
@gizmonomono
@gizmonomono 4 жыл бұрын
@@golfclub2830 A heavier arrow penetrates more. Up to a point. But the tip of the arrow and the angle of penetration is also important. Have you ever seen a suit of armor that has a flat plate at the front? Armors curve, to better deflect projectiles. Same principal as used on tanks. Surfaces are at an angle as to deflect incoming projectiles.
@golfclub2830
@golfclub2830 4 жыл бұрын
@@gizmonomono a heavier projectile penetrates more at the same velocity, but in a bow, where the force is the same, a heavier arrow will have a lower speed. It is exactly why a rifle round is small and fast compared to a pistol one: it will have less stopping power but better penetration. Also yes, armor is never flat and definitely better than the sheet jorge used in the vdeo. I'm not saying that a modern bow would penetrate anything from the medieval era, it's just superior
@kooroshrostami27
@kooroshrostami27 4 жыл бұрын
it still proves the point that in medieval times, you would need heavy ass warbows or heavy ass crossbows to have any chance of killing or incapacitating a decently armored solider from distance (unless you had an army of ballistas, which you don't). 170 pound warbow would definetly do the trick against mediocre armor, but I think it is safe to say that no medieval warbow could pierce a top notch breastplate such as an elite knight would wear. You world really have to hit the weakpoints of the plate armor to have any chance of penetration.

One of the bonuses that I can't remember him actually talking about is the fact that not only is the bow often more accurate when used with the legolas repeating action, but its because it has a barrel of sorts. As the arrow is released, it travels down a confined chamber keeping it in line with the end of the bows draw; consequently, there is less deviation in the arrow's flight, making it more accurate.

I'm noticing one thing though, its that when your hands get close to your chest at the final draw point it seems like you're having to really flex your shoulders & back to get it to lock and looks extremely stressful not to mention uncomfortable. I'm not sure but it looks looks like there's maybe a 6 to 8 inch distance between the stationary handle and the chest plate. I was thinking that maybe increasing that distance by even 2 to 3 inches would help make it easier for you to draw that last bit, by giving you just a little more leverage towards the end of the draw where it's most difficult. Just a thought, an awesome concept regardless 👍👍

So how would you be able to create a type of medieval compound bow? They had functioning block and tackle systems back as far as 1500 bc, anyway to re-create something like this in a bow?

Respect to the archers that pulled those bows. And to think that Mongol's bows were recorded at an average of 160 to 166 lb pulls that they shot on horseback, from different riding positions, both right and left handed. And the women were also able to pull those bows, even though they rarely fought in the military, they still hunted and defended their homes. Powerful people.
