The thing that got me my first win was hard stacking dots in clumps. Like 4 poison sprayers at this choke point. Mulitple flame throwers or shredders at another. Stacking the dot up higher faster, rather than slowly stacking it across the whole run.

Strictly from an observational standpoint, why not build more assets towards the final chokepoint? Especially combining things like poison spray slow and obelisk spam. I haven't bought this game yet but I'm certainly interested.

I thought about this. I rest the upgrades and just upgraded arrow tower, poison spray, poison card (upgrades), bandits, and mana. Left everything else locked. It wasn't too hard to win (just solo arrow) when every round gives you a stronger power up and the 1 dead card each draw would be the poison spray. Having everything unlocked and trying to upgrade across the board really hurts the quick scaling.

@@Chromodar Beat the game on triple defense and got only ballistas achievement. Optimal expansion strategy basically comes down to: 1- make a really long path. Like one really, really long path. 2: on boss waves expand one of your short paths so that all your paths should hit the killbox at different times. That's it. If you have one short path you never expand, a middle path that you expand only a couple times, and a super long path, usually your branches will pop out on the super long path which doesn't really matter, since the only enemies that pose a threat are the ones on the short path.

At the very end (1:14:00) "it's really hard to not do that" *places x5 poison tower down where it can only target 1/10th of the enemies* Putting towers down at the end of long single paths is not the way to go. A +0 poison sprayer at a choke point might have done 5x less damage, but hit 10x as many enemies, effectively doubling its overall damage output. Need more focus on choke points for this reason. The "main" chokepoint (where all enemy paths cross) should be crowded with towers for the same reason as the poison tower above. A weak tower in those spots will do far more overall damage than a strong tower placed on a single lane. Behind that chokepoint you'll ideally have strong single target towers upgraded specifically for whatever is leaking past aoe chokepoints. That last obelisk could've used friends, upgraded with a bunch of health levels or with a bunch of emergency shield/armor ups as needed

Two things made this game click for me. First is looking at the enemy encyclopedia and learning what the enemies do. When I'm in game, it's hard to identify what enemies are the threat. I'm doing okay and then it spawns 100 of something I have almost no previous experience with and then I'm dead. I had to look in the encyclopedia to know which enemy actually killed me. Second, I moved away from the idea that towers are locked into only being good against certain health types. When you first place a tower, the upgrades are so cheap that you can make it do anything. Mortars are good against armor, but making it just as good against shield from level 1 costs like 500 gold. You can specialize each individual tower to be good against a certain enemy. This means you don't need to take a specific tower to counter enemies. Taking fewer tower types means the towers you do take can be upgraded more with the cards. Hope this helps someone
@samus5982 жыл бұрын
Yup. If you're going to build 20 mortar towers and only 2 or 3 of other towers like NL is doing (which is a mistake anyways imo since they get so much more expensive) you need to at least pick a few mortars that will specialize vs health and a few for shields. As soon as you place them level them up for one or the other and have them target those units. The leveling decisions also need to consider which damage type you're struggling against. Like if a bunch of bats are getting by put an obelisk in the back and upgrade its health damage. I always have a few health upped shredders and a health upped obelisk at my main chokepoint. He undervalues leveling towers and then when he does he seemingly makes no strategical analysis and instead opts to randomly spam them on random towers.

You need to heavily fortify your towers in areas before your path starts splitting, then more selectively after splits to add dot. Prioritize the beginning areas where towers can hit both close to the base and also where paths loop around so they can hit at minion spawns and then again close to the base
@samus5982 жыл бұрын
Yeah it's a real analytical failure that he is putting towers, like the poison sprayer at 1:14:00, where they can only hit one lane just because the tile is a +5. There were 7 lanes, so even a +0 at the main chokepoint hits 7x as many units and is a much higher value. He should think of all towers at the main chokepoint as a xA, where A is the number of spawn points. If he just put a few obelisks or had put all of his "ballista spam" in a spot where they could hit all the units and upgraded them he could've pulled this one off

NL, you should give Lookouts a try. Have two lookout towers on a good tiles (one targeting progress, another highest health/shield/armor). Then spam the hell out of as many towers as you can afford, upgrading nothing except the lookouts. Set single-target towers to "Marked" and leave everything else alone. It's OPAF because the upgrades to lookouts apply to EVERYTHING that targets the lookouts target, which melts any single target in the game--and best of all, it requires a minimum of fiddling with menus if you just spam AoE towers. Even Frost Keeps slay bosses if you have a level 20 +3 lookout boosting them

I had the benefit of watching you, but I would think of it this way NL: Armor, shield, and health specialized units at the conjuction and start setting up points branching out from there, setting up an attack hub down each branch. Mortars are good support damage for occasional damage, but their accuracy is a problem. I usually go flame/shredder, frost, poison/tesla, then mortar. Mana generators early as possible, aim for 50 early midgame, 100 mid/late and if you take an obelisk later you need like 175-200m/s. Frost towers as often as possible. Keep the branches one branch longer by a little then creep the other branches as well otherwise you're wasting range and time to attack. Finally, sprinkle mortars to hit them as they go down the paths. Most importantly, have fun man love watching you play 😁

In regards to university odds at 58:15, the chatter is a fool. As long as the total sum of percentages is the same, the expected average payout won't change in the long run. It's possible they meant that one large university has a higher chance of paying out at any given turn compared to several small ones, which is true. However, this effect is exactly negated by the chance for getting several triggers in one turn when you have more universities (the increased chance of getting zero triggers is balanced by the chance for several triggers simultaneously), and therefore we have no long term difference when the law of large numbers plays out. In other words, changing the percentage distribution only changes the variance, but not the mean. Go wide if you want to gamble (added risk but better payoff), and go tall for steady and stable results, long term it makes no difference. I also ran the numbers on most cost-efficient number of upgrades on the university before you should buy another one. The most optimal amount of buys is 7, then the increase in upgrade cost outweighs the cost of buying a new university. This is obviously assuming infinite access to university spots, which is unrealistic, and in addition, over-upgraded universities are MUCH better than under-upgraded ones (worst return on investment is by far for the first few upgrades)

@linusgschonhowd21322 жыл бұрын
@@B1aQQ Long run as in the statistical average. Going wide is equally likely to overpay you as to underpay you, so there's really nothing to equalise. @B1aQQ2 жыл бұрын
@@linusgschonhowd2132 For a big enough sample, yes. 20 waves is too few to reach the average consistently. Even a coinflip can produce highly uneven results with 20 tosses.
@linusgschonhowd21322 жыл бұрын
@@B1aQQ Sure, but my point is that no distribution is inherently better than another, which is illustrated by the mean. Whether or not we hit that exact mean or not is largely irrelevant. Whatever distribution we choose, we can never guarantee hitting the expected average, so that's hardly a relevant metric when comparing different percentage spreads? The question was whether or not one distribution is better than another, and as long as the mean remains the same, the answer is no. Everything else is statistical noise, and although you might argue for variance in each run, being limited by 20-ish turns, across multiple runs this will even out, and you will be rewarded as much as you will be punished, no matter how you divide your odds. I did mention the risk/reward of changing the variance, so if your issue is with consistency I don't believe we disagree, but I think you might be overestimating the difference in results, even in the short term, because it's pretty tiny anyways.

I love the Monty Hall problem. For those who don't know it, it's from a game show where the contestant blindly choose between 3 doors, 2 of them has a small consolation prize and one has a big price. When the contestant choose a door, the host open up one of the other to reveal a consolation prize, then offer the contestant to either keep the door they initially choose or swap to the other door. The problem is, does the contestant come better out from keeping the initial door or swap it? The solution, based on probability is to always swap! The initial door, choosed on random have a 1/3 chance of being the correct one. Revealing a loosing door give you new information, it's easy to intuitively think there is now a 50/50 chance that the door you choose from the beginning is the winning door, but it is still 1/3, so the other door has a 2/3 chance to be the winning door, effectively double your chance to win by swapping doors! Of course, being a game of chance, there is no guarantee that swapping is the ACTUAL best choice, only the PROBABLE best choice.

Because a tower can only attack when enemies are close. So, 2-8 attacks maybe, depending on placement. Whereas encampments constantly place mines. So, if enemies get close, they find 30-40 mines (attacks) waiting for them. That is the encampments power. All of its attacks are stored on the lane until they are needed. It's lowkey goated. ANYWAY! There are many ways to win the game, but here's one build to get an easy win: 1. Take: Shredder, Flame Thrower, Poison Sprayer. Maybe take: Obelisk, Frost Keep. Don't take: Ballista (except for the first few waves), Mortar, Tesla Coil, Encampment, Radar, Particle Cannon, Lookout. (This is not to say that those turrets are bad or "never-take"s in general, just for this build, because it's easier to win without them. Eg ballistas are the most versatile turrets in the game and can win a game solo.) 2. Poison Sprayers need to be spammed more than other turrets. Shield bars in this game take a lot more to go down than armor and health. 3. Turrets level themselves as long as they have an enemy to shoot at. When you move your lines forward, your rear turrets level slower. Remember to level them manually. 4. Universities are not worth the time and gold investment, so ignore them. (The University matters more for challenge runs, where you're using a turret type to do damage that it's not inherently good at.) 5. Flame Throwers and Poison Sprayers shoot in a line that does damage along the line, so prefer to put them on a corner that a long road leads in to, or where a long road starts from. Set targeting accordingly, ie Progress for a turret that shoots down a long road. Mountains on intersections also work for this, since all the long roads coming out of an intersection usually line up with the central peak. 6. Shields always need to be stripped before armor, and armor always need to be stripped before health. So shield turrets need to be placed closest to the enemy, and health turrets the farthest. You'll have to repeat this setup multiple times because of enemies that spawn other enemies. 7. The Creeping Cough upgrade (poison = slow) is a must-take. It also works well with (6) above if you're using Poison Sprayers. It's worth putting Poison Sprayers everywhere along the road, even where you think you've already stripped all the shields, just to be able to keep applying slow.

I made this comment at the beginning of your video. Yes all the cream you talk about dont work if you jam all of it togheter. It will counter act eachother. So you need to use the creams (if you got them all) on different times or days so it will have an effect

Particle cannon is great anti shield man. Every time I win I get away with; poison sprayer, mortar, shredders, obelisk, and particle cannon. The upgrade to make poison slow and it's a cake walk with a good choke point.

Believe me if he was ever offered that upgrade he would've taken it within 10miliseconds of seeing it.

Taking one tower for one specific thing, like shields, is a bad idea because you can legit just upgrade the towers to do tons of damage against it, ie; upgrade obelisk

I feel compelled to leave a write up of the Monty Hall Problem here. The scenario is as follows: You are presented with three doors, and you know that behind one door is a prize, you just don't know which door it is. You choose 1 door, and then one unchosen door falls away while the door you chose and the one remaining (unchosen) door remains. You are now given a choice to change your choice. The crux of the problem, and NL's vernacular of "new information" comes at this point. By the rules of the game, the prize MUST be behind one of the two remaining doors. The probabilities are actually as follows: 33.3% for your chosen door, 66.6% for the one you did not choose, not 50/50. This is due to knowing the prize must be in the selection. Can you see why? If not, let's blow this up. Instead of 3 doors, imagine there are 100 doors. You look, bewildered at the myriad of choices facing you. You pick a door. There is a 1 in 100 chance you just picked the right door. Now all the other doors fall away, and now only two doors lie in front of you. Recall the probability that your choice of door was correct was, and still is, a measly 1%. Since there is a 100% chance that the prize is still in the selection, where does the other 99% lie? In the alternate, unchosen door. And so you have the Monty Hall problem. Some people go on about how "the probability is doubled in the unchosen door" for the original situation, but that is a just how the numbers happen to play out in a 3 door situation, it's not a tenet of a generalized Monty Hall.

Ten 1/100 chances have the same expected value as one 1/10 chance. The only difference is that ten 1/100s have higher variance, like NL was saying. The one 1/10 chance can only ever have a payout of 1, while the ten 1/100s can pay out simultaneously. It perfectly evens out, with an expected value of one upgrade every ten rounds for both options. This is, of course, in a vacuum. You could argue that the 1/10 is more reliable because although you can't get upgrade spikes, you'll get a more reliable drip of upgrades. That's true, but that's just as subjective an assessment as NL's 'I want the chance to win the lottery'. Either way, it's uncertain when you will get your upgrades. I don't think there's any way to usefully quantify the 'reliability' of the 1/10 beyond looking at how much it will pay out over a particular stretch of time: that is, expected value. Therefore it's an error to claim that it's better than ten 1/100s.

Like so he sees the math thing Hey NL, the math on one 10% vs ten 1% is basically even. The chance of getting AT LEAST ONE upgrade is higher on the one high level uni, but the ability to roll more than one upgrade means that the average number of upgrades received is borderline identical and not worth thinking about too hard Much better to spend your brainpower on strategies and tower placements
@derekrocco43442 жыл бұрын
Regarding probabilities (10 1%s vs 1 10%), I'd say 10 1%s is better if your likelihood of winning is solely dependent on you getting a higher-than-average number of upgrades. The "mean" expected gains are the same (10 gains per 100 trials), but the 10-1% approach will have fewer rounds with any gains - yet some rounds with multiple gains. Let's talk about 2 50%s vs 1 100%. 1 100% gives you the "expected" 1 growth per turn. 2 50%'s gives 0 25% of the time, 1 50% of the time, and 2 25% of the time. If you *need* the 2 growth-per-turn to win, you should go balls to the walls and play the odds. If you expect you'll win, though, the 0 growth turns could hose you, and you ought to live your life dangerously by betting on 100%.

NL please, for the sweet love of all things holy in this world, please Jesus, just pick one or two towers! Any tower, even just ballistas!
