I just thought of something... what if Protoman's whistle was his initial boot-up tune, you know the way computers have that little jingle, and him repeating it to himself is a way to remind himself of happier days. Back when it was just him and Dr Light, before all the bad things happened to him, when he wasn't the Breakman or the Protoman, when he was just Blues?

I love how Proto Man says Mega Man is "The one", as a callback to "I Want to be The One" from Get Equipped. In Get Equipped, Mega *wanted* to be the one to fight against Wily and bring him to justice, both from a sense of youthful naiveite about what it means to be a hero, and a feeling of obligation due to the two doctors' previous connection. As of History Repeating, he *has* to be the one. It may not be the life he expected or even wanted, but it's what he must do to ensure everlasting peace.

Maybe I'm reading way too much into this but this song resonates with me. I am the oldest and as soon as my brother was born my parents basically forgot I existed. Even to the point of forgetting to buy me clothes or food because they were too preoccupied with the "baby" . As he got older he and my dad had more in common in terms of their interests than I did with dad so he spent a ton of time with my brother and none with me. I had to go out, take care of myself even as a child and had to make my own way without any help from my parents. They never would do anything to help when I tried to ask them. I had to forge my own path even if I didn't know where it would lead me. I made mistakes but I'm in a good place now. I never blamed him though because it wasn't his fault. Over time forgave my parents too. So from an abandoned first born thank you for making such a touching song.

This is an even more bittersweet song than it sounds like to most who hear it. Consider the fact that this is from the perspective of a synthetic humanoid being given life, abandoned whether by accident or due to his generally artificial free-will glitch(to which Blues still feels malice), labelled a prototype, and used as a weapon by his creator's colleague to target his own brother. Sure, he absolutely resented his blue-clad sibling, seeing him as more of a cheap replica meant to replace him and to be used as a tool without free will, but after a few battles against him, Blues seems to come to the realization that what Rock is doing is genuinely his own choice. It seems he turned back at the last second to try to save both Mega Man and Dr. Wily before the entire bunker collapsed onto both of them, only having made it in time for the former. Keep in mind, this is already at the very climax of what's likely a years-long ongoing war between machines and humanity, and with everything now at an end with the most powerful of both sides beneath metric tons of rubble, not to mention the remains of Gamma's supercomputer and mechsuit components, Blues is likely trying to save them both; after he was separated from Light, war was likely all he had left to begin with, and he probably is digging up whatever's left to either keep the war going or to declare a winner. But is that what he's after? I'd say Blues is digging up both Rock and Wily, hoping to either find them both or to find closure on what path to take. He finds Mega Man, battered, beaten, bruised, bent, busted, blasted, bashed, bonked, and basically broken, and with it he seems to find both a sense of relief that humanity can rest easy knowing that their hero could survive. Despite this, it seems like he's left with an empty, hollow feeling. Dr. Wily's obviously crushed to death, flattened by a ton of towers, computer equipment, factory assembly lines, Gamma's hulking frame, and quite possibly even a gigantic, cartoonish artificial bone chimney. Blues is, however, upset by this, as Wily was basically the one to make him what he is. His definitive proof that he was not broken, not the Break Man, but in fact, the Proto Man. In a sense, Wily was his second creator. As for his first creator, Blues feels a sense of secondhand guilt for Rock, knowing that Light spent a ton of time working on finishing Gamma, but ignoring Mega Man's damage. While both him and Mega Man are synthetic humanoid robots, they're still given emotions, even if pre-programmed into them and algorithmically generated since activation. He knows how it feels to be used and forgotten. He's both aware of the fact that he's being an older brother to Rock both for the sake of the blue bomber, and for his own stability, as he's got nothing else to latch onto. Perhaps he's dejected from having lost everything in his entire life, but with the respect he's earned for Mega Man, he's lost the hatred within him that burns outward, eating him alive, and instead uses his tranquil turmoil as an example. He's lost everything and everyone that ever meant anything to him, but he's gained a brother. The future may look bleak, but we have the gift of the present. Let's look forward while we hear a melody from the past. Also, I just like the implication that this is a real song that is being constantly made reference to by Proto Man himself. I guess he really likes The Megas too, doesn't he? Don't blame 'im.~

Not that I know the Megas are done as a band (or moving on to other projects, eg. The Belmonts) or whatever, but damn if this isn't a perfect "final" song for them. Similar to 'Continue,' they managed to take a relatively short loop of a song and take it to new heights with their instrumentation and lyrics. I truly hope they let their batteries recharge working on other stuff and real life, but hopefully working on another MM album. I've my fingers crossed for Mega Man X!

I always like to imagine what a music video to these songs look like. I just imagine that, everyone at home, Light, Roll, Rush, fear the worst that Megaman had fallen. But the song starts, in place of Protomans whistle, and when they go outside they see a red silhouette holding the damaged body of Megaman, heavily wounded but alive. He leaves Megaman to them and takes his leave. Hanging in the background over time as Mega recovered. Monsteropolis and its people and the Light Robot masters making repairs, hoping for Rocks recovery, authorities looking for the body of Wily, if it even still exists. As Megaman awakes, Protoman watches from a window and takes his leave. At 3:55 Protoman witnesses(This is something I had in mind in a previous video) a person who robbed another person during the chaos that Megaman witnessed earlier giving back what he stole. Protoman sees the good in man even despite their flaws, and though he doesn't know what to do now, he takes a triumphant stand with a smile, determined to make that choice for himself. As the song is closing, Rock is given a book on the Light numbers. Rock is still healing, currently taking it easy. He goes outside, seeing a picture of Protoman in the book. He looks over the cliff of his home, the city in view, and the smiling silouette of Protoman in the sky, calling back to the original games ending.

Around a week later I introduced my 9 year old daughter to the song. We began to explore more of The Megas' Discography and the more she heard the more she wanted to know. Thanks to this song, as well as your music in general, my daughter and I are bonding like never before, playing through the Mega Man Legacy series and talking about the deeper levels of what the Robot Masters represent and their desires behind their programming etc. None of this would've happened if I never discovered your music. Question: Did MegaMan kill Wiley after all after the last song, and that is why Protoman says he "knows what he'd become", if he had done the same? The last few songs are a bit ambiguous about MegaMan, and what he decides to do after "I Refuse". "Sometimes I can't see the blue through the red, hard to see the good through your trail of dead" from "I'm not the Breakman" paints him as pretty brutal, so I could imagine him making the "wrong" choice even after his crisis of conscience in "I Refuse".
@joaquinsinopoli80103 жыл бұрын
I think the part that says "knows what he'd become", he is refering to the fact that Rock becomes a combat robot. Originaly, he was only a lab assistant. "Sometimes I can't see the blue through the red, hard to see the good through your trail of dead", I think that is a pun, because the armor of "Blues" is Red, and the robot that "takes his place" is blue. "Im not the Breakman" maybe refers to the fact that is Blues who is broken inside. But that is only my personal interpretation.

"I Refuse", imo, is all about Mega Man breaking through the malaise and doubt he's suffered this entire adventure and embracing the passion he felt all the way back at, "I Want To Be The One." It's a triumphant moment where Mega Man claims he's not just going to save Blues, but Dr. Light from the hate and pain that's twisted them, a final refutation of "I Want To Be The One To Watch You Die.". Mega Man remembers who he is, a hero, and he defies Blues's claims that the two of them aren't real, but just very convincing puppets so hard Blues starts to think of himself as a person again, putting him on the long, slow path to reconciliation with Dr. Light. In other words, no, I think it goes like the game where Mega Man decides to save Wily but an accident leaves everyone thinking the old man's dead until MM4.
@nexuslord68313 жыл бұрын
@@joaquinsinopoli8010 He's referring to how if he had killed Wily like Light wanted Mega Man to do, he'd become something worse, or he would never be able to take it back and would be cursed as a killer. "Sometimes I can't see the blue through the read, hard to see the good through your trail of dead" refers to the amount of Robot Masters Mega Man had to kill in order to get as far as he did, and is either about the blood on Mega Man's hands, or the similarities between him and Blues. Or both. And to refer to the "Did he kill Wily", unlikely. It wouldn't make sense after "I Refuse to Believe", where he decides he'll do what he thinks is just. And also because of his line "I will not kill, no I will believe". Why would he say that and then get rid of Wily?

I like to think that Proto Man is singing this song in his final moments. He reflects on his past, his severe guilt as Break Man, and wishing that he was wiser with his choices in his life. His power core is finally giving in, and the "melody from the past" represents his Proto Man whistle, but also his own life flashing before his eyes before he succumbs to his own mortality.

The Protomen have some really fucking amazing songs, but they've also got some forgettable ones, but each of the Megas songs are consistently catchy.

I’d honestly say the exact opposite. The Megas are more of a quantity over quality band for me, with a few bangers, whereas I just cannot pick favorites with The Protomen; the songs all segue perfectly into one another and make up one fantastic story that never fails to move me. I agree with what OP said. But I guess that’s human subjectivity.

Eh, they both set out to do different things, and as far as I'm concerned they both did very well.

Imagine dual mixes with these two

Protomen are more artistic and focus on a grindhouse original story featuring the source megaman as inspiration. Megas do rock covers but turned the songs into long term storytelling. Both Megas and Protomen captured the dialogue and chemistry through a series of songs featuring Megaman and Protoman. Both are good. I perfer the megas but Will of One, light up the night, and the hounds are top tier music numbers
