The Melbourne Line ( Cloud Trail ) Melbourne to Chellaston Junction
In this video i visit a stretch of the former Midland Railways Melbourne line. This ran from Derby to Melbourne then a few years later onto Ashby de la Zouch.
In this video i cover the stretch from the formr Melbourne Station, pass alongside the former Melbourne Military School, on towards the River Trent, Trent & Mersey Canal & a quick re visit to see Chellaston Engine Shed. Our final point of call is Chellaston East Junction.

I think the line stopped being used for freight much earlier than 1980. I remember crossing the bridge over the river trent on training runs with Derby & County athletics club in the 1970s and it was definitely not in use at that time. We could see the river through holes in the bridge!

That was a nice relaxing watch for a Sunday afternoon. Isn't it great when you find a bit of history like the rail in the grass and the signal? I've found similar on my Lincolnshire railway walks and it makes your day!!!

This was done before I walked the Trent and Mersey Canal to Willington, a really nice day. It's a nice little area, I'm hoping I get the chance to go the opposite way

I have been researching this for a model railway exhibition layout. There are photos of the bridge building school. They built bridges over the trent in training. Americans and eventually Canadians trained there too. Their barracks of course were on the Weston side of the river and there was a suspension bridge in between (foot traffic). The LMS provided most of the locomotives and rolling stock and civilian trade continued. For example, limestone from Breedon and Cloud Hill, produce from the Melbourne market gardens wen to Chesterfield every week, clay and coal were also moved. The Germans bombed it a couple of times and there was at least one death through accident and a badly wounded soldier. They occasionally blew some line up and repaired it in training but most of the demolition took place at the Longmoor Military Railway. The soldiers went to the LMS model railway in Derby to learn the signaling system. It was built by Bassett-Lowke, who Hornby eventually bought out. As you alluded, two tracks went part of the way then a single line to Ashby. The Ashby line was a converted tramway. There was also a vehicle loading/unloading ramp at Breedon and Tonge station called the Castle Donington siding. This was for the motor storage depot at Donington Park/Donington Hall.

My mum and dad used to keep their caravan at the kings newton depot in Melbourne in the 80s. It was an interesting place with old military huts. Supposedly back in the day they used to store the Wellington bombers there. There also used to be a fairly big, black, hanger on site. The more expensive caravans were stored in it . Wish I could find some old pictures of it.

I live in Chellaston so am familiar with this walk. I very much enjoyed this film in consequence, especially the photos of when the railway was active, and also the drone shots of the lovely bridge over the Trent. Many thanks for this and other videos, much appreciated!

@@juliaevans5113 walk down the canal from Swarkestone Lock towards Weston-on-Trent. Just before the railway bridge over the canal (Sarsons Bridge, shone in the film, about a mile from Swarkestone Lock) there is a footpath leading from the canal towpath up to the former railway line.

For more photos and information on this line Oakwood Press have a book called “The Melbourne Military Railway” covering the period 1939-1945 book number LP178 If you’d gone up onto the Melbourne road at Kings Newton and drop down the bridge towards the race track you’d have notice one or more concrete buffer stops in the field to the left. Remains of the sidings from the military camp.

Pretty cool video. Than you. I spent pretty much the whole of lockdown summer 2020 up to the autumn exploring this line. The cloud trail part was easy but it got me intrigued about the rest of the line, so I explored the whole length from one end to the other. No videos but I have taken literally thousands of photos, and found the way in to some of the more tricky to get to spots. Just one correction to your video. The rail bridge over the Trent and Mersey canal isn't Sarson's Bridge. The honour of that name actually goes to the small canal stone bridge next to it.
