The Melbourne shuffle 1
Location: Dream nightclub Melbourne Australia
Date: June 1 2002
Sponsor: Globe international
MC: Steve Douglas
Production: Wetmuzik AKA Simon Digby & Will E Tell.
Promotion: The Steve Douglas explosion on Kiss FM Melbourne & Matt Calendar of In The Mix .
BACK STORY:
After hosting numerous international DJ's & running some pretty big raves at central pier and some other iconic rave locations around Melbourne, Simon & Steve were constantly being told by nearly every DJ they hosted, how unique & mesmerising Melbourne dancers were, no where in the world had any of them seen the moves or the enthusiasm of the Melbourne shufflers.
Steve, Will & Simon held numerous discussions on the topic raised by their international guests & toyed with the idea of running a small party dedicated to those that made the local scene, the DJ's & in the spotlight, the shufflers.
Steve started the ball rolling by putting it out there through his weekly radio slot on Kiss FM, the response was pretty good, Simon then contacted Matt at in the mix & a modest campaign targeting melbournes core of shufflers.
A date was set, Dream nightclub was booked & the result is what you see in this short video.
It was an effort to capture a time in Melbournes underground culture of the time, the music that moved people, the ambience of the dance floor & the shufflers that simply blew away so many of our international guests.
At the time of writing this, its been 18 years & everyone in these images is that much older, many will have kids & are doing the daily grind. I hope that some of them see themselves here & that it puts a smile on their faces.
I know for a fact that all who were involved in the Melbourne shuffle parties, who see the two videos we produced, we look back and we all smile at the good times & incredibly friendly people we met there.
The three tracks played here are.
Danilo Vigoroto - Pression (B1)
Woody McBride - Off The Ceiling (Advent Remix)
Filter Science - Darkness Falls (Joey Beltram Remix)

@@planetdisco4821 Oh sounds like you use to do the rounds, did you ever go to Redhead? I worked there for 9 years, thats where I met Simon Digby & fell into the scene in the 90"s. @@MDCDiGiPiCs I’m not sure though all the names ring a bell. It’s been a long time and there were (ahem) “reasons” why I don’t precisely remember the names of some venues lol. Dropped my Harley off yesterday to get a new exhaust fitted and walked home via Docklands when I passed Shed 14 Victoria docks. Now sadly fenced off and apparently ready to drop into the ocean at any moment lol. The ALSO foundation used to put on 3 or 4 parties a year there that were the stuff of legend. Melbourne will never be able to put on warehouse parties like that ever again. I’m glad I was there…

Ahh, pre 2005. Those were the days. Hardstyle hadn't yet infected the Melbourne scene, ravers danced in lines and kept to their own space and dancing wasn't a competion. Shuffling was also still shuffling and it hadn't mutated into the running man. Unfortuantely the rise of the running man coincided with the birth of You Tube so very little footage of the orginal style exists. Even the "Melbourne Shuffler" documentary has very little of the orginal shuffle in it. Thanks for the post and the girl at 1:57 NAILS IT!!

Was shuffling in Sydney in the early 90s after watching some cool cats at Ziggurat in the Cross doing these moves. They were as smooth af. Incorporated it into the popping and locking I'd been doing since the mid-80s and we had a team that used to enter and sometimes win dance comps back then. The music was hype, the crowds were lovely, and the vibe was wonderful. Peaked at the rave, 'Such a Good Feeling,' (warehouse in Alexandria, I think) Sydney, 1992.

Not according to the DJ"s that use to tour from the UK Germany and Sweden. They generally use to comment on the dance style in Melbourne as being unique. We use to tour some big names in techno and tech house in the day, and it struck us as interesting that we'd always get these comments. I'm not saying that there isn't other places on the planet where similar styles exist, but the basis of the the name came from the comments.

Sydney shufflers in the 90’s and early 2000’s didn’t flail their arms around as much and their footwork while energetic looked more seamless and sliding like. I think Sydney did it better but respect to Melbourne for a great cultural movement. Now I’ll be running out dodging the bullets.

Love it! But I can’t help thinking the Cambridge shuffle from the late 80’s and early 90’s from the UK was the original… Kite High and Proper stuff illegal raves was the first place I’ve seen shuffling. Shuffling for the world 🌎 ❤

You are more than likely correct, the shuffle in this video & it's name was the result of the comments made by many international DJ's that we use to tour, & we toured a lot of big names. The overwhelming number of comments centred around the Melbourne scene & the dance style, both having a uniqueness. Without doubt, similar styles exist or existed elsewhere, but the fact remains that artists like Carl Cox, Humate, Der Dritte Raum and Thomas Shoemaker are just a few examples of those who come to memory that expressed their delight in the uniqueness of the Melbourne scene. Strangely one Carl Cox was so taken by the scene that he migrated to Melbourne.

Carl Cox was a regular at my local rave night in Nottingham, along with Fabio, DJ SS, Slipmatt, Grooverider, old school house. It’s a good thing music has no borders 🙌🏽

Nice! Speaking as someone who became obsessed with the original version of this kind of dance in 1990 (ie. "stomping"), I think this is the best technical display of 'shuffling' to faster BPMs that I've ever seen. By late 1992 the moderate BPMs we'd been dancing to (dj's had often been playing at about 125) at places like Pure, were giving way to stuff over 130, and by 1993 you had jungle and techno played probably around 140. That didn't interest me, and by 2000 I'd moved overseas and was more into house and progressive anyway. That said, IMO the high bpms changed the dance, basically forcing dancers to reduce or even eliminate the stomping motion, relying instead on the shuffling type steps. So when I've checked YT for good examples of 'shuffling' I've always been a bit disappointed...it all seemed a bit basic and repetitive, and not that creative. The guys and girls in this vid were super-good tho, wished I been there for a bit of a dance =) Proper tunes too... PS. my comments above I guess are really for people who weren't there, or have hazy memories of it all. But to the creator and poster, thank-you for sharing this. Of course I've seen the "Melbourne Shuffler" doco ages ago, but have just discovered your channel today. I'll have to check out the rest of your stuff on YT in due course....peace...
