Riy was one of the first born this season in Bossy’s troop. She is going to have to give up the teat eventually. She is just looking around and seeing the younger babies still happily nursing in their mothers’ arms and doesn’t realize that their time is fast approaching as well. Seasons’ change and the Mums’ attentions have turned to mating and preparing for the long lean times of winter.

I now refer to each one as: "whatever-your-name-is-dont-worry-you-will-understand-when-you-get-old". Its easier to remember THAT than whatever the heck their names are, anyway.

What I noticed is how little a reaction she had when her momma was biting her. And there's all these channels about Mean Monkey Moms abusing their babies. This should prove that it's not abuse, the mothers are NOT hurting them with the bites. There's no blood, no bruises, not a single mark left on the babies. The ones that do scream are only doing it to be dramatic. "Momma, please don't hurt me, ohhhh, you're killing me! You're done biting? Time to try again!!"

Dimpy is a first-time mom and has made many mistakes. At birth, breastfeeding didn't come natural to Dimpy. Riy was pushed here and there often. I initially was worried Riy would not make it. The infant mortality rate for first time mothers is high. Dimpy started putting limits on when Riy could breastfeed early on. Moreover, the more Riy cried, Dimpy would eventually give in. Dimpy's behavior sent mixed messages which inadvertently promoted whining. It is important that when a mom says no, it is no. Dolly and Bossy are perfect examples. These macaques are awesome mothers but are not uncertain regarding nursing. Bossy and Dolly are firm with their babies. Dolly puts limits on her boys nursing on the early side like Dimpy did. Her boys would throw big baby fits, but they would eventually comply because Dolly was firm. None of Dolly's boys were whiners, underfed nor was weaning difficult for them. Bossy and Dolly are also not abusive or neglectful to their babies. Furthermore, both these older females have had many offspring thus have refined their parenting skills. Bossy and Dolly have an amazing high infant survival rate. Another odd incident was once Dipidy was born, Dimpy let Riy free to wander about. Riy was on the young side, but not too young. Did this instant freedom traumatize Riy and begin her need to call for her mom more frequently compared to other infants? Moreover, Riy is a bit hyperactive which doesn't help her settle down and nurse until her tummy was full. Riy is more of a grazer. Grazers want to nurse constantly, sipping here and there but never filling their tummy. This grazing tendency can happen with human babies. So, observing the same behavior happening with a primate isn't surprising. In order to stop this grazing behavior, lactation specialists instruct mothers to wake their baby in order for them to continue nursing until their tummy is full. This constant waking was never done by Dimpy. Moreover, she has allowed Riy to graze. This behavior has been interpreted by many as Riy being annoying, whining and out of control. I personally see it differently. Riy's behavior is a reflection of Dimpy's parenting style. On Dimpy's behalf, Riy is alive and thriving. We have observed Dimpy's parenting skills improve daily. Dimpy will continue to learn like all first-time moms do and Riy will eventually buck up and become the incredible daughter and protective sister soon. Dimpy is and has always been one of my favorite female macaques and little beady eyed Riy and her constant vocalization melted my heart from the get go. Whiny or extremely verbal she is absolutely adorable and entertaining.
@runedharma22 Жыл бұрын
You can tell that others are getting annoyed with It. They don't want her to interfere with their weaning process. Riy does not know the natural cycle, as her mom needs to quit producing milk for next mating season. Riy will get a brother or a sister.

That is Lancy's eldest unnamed sterilized daughter hugging Reddy's daughter Deenly. Deenly is the little macaque that sucks her thumb. This unnamed daughter of Lancy's has come to Deenly's aide often this year. Looks like Deenly has made an important friend who will defend her (give her agnostic support). Yeah, for smart little Deenly. Lancy and her offspring are the second highest ranking family. Only Bossy, the matriarch and her offspring are higher ranking.

OMG I’m tired of hearing Riy whining. Acts like she’s the only one being weened. Seriously a one-track mind. I do think when mom allows her sometimes and not others it’s confusing her. If she allowed it only at distinct times of day (breakfast and before bedding down) she might adjust and learn it’s not happening in between. Giving in to the constant begging sometimes encourages her to try constantly and she’ll eventually break down the defenses. Hell, we’re a mom I’d give her milk to shut her up.

These monkeys may be different but in the past 2 or 3 yrs I've watched the long and pig tails. They most certainly do force females to mate.They run her down time after time and fight with her. They use their weight and hold her down. I've even seen one go up a tree and the male grabbed her and used his weight to make her slip and fall. He landed on top of her and held her down while he mated. It is a very dangerous time. I have a big example. They usually don't have babies until around 5 yrs but since the cull most that were able to reproduce were removed along with the alpha males. Now beta or bachelor males storm in trying to take their places. They mate with anything that moves. There is one of a few younger females that isn't even grown yet. She's 2 or 3 yrs old and was held down and forced. She now has a baby that's half her size. I've often remarked that humans aren't the only animal that rapes females but I guess each breed is different

Because those are not wild monkeys, they are descendants of abandoned pets, as such their behaviour is different from wild monkeys. Truly wild monkeys in Cambodia is only found in a few places, mainly in Cardamon mountains bordering Thailand.

What Riy needs is a couple of real slaps from mom and mom can’t let her get sips sometimes because she’s showing to Riy that she doesn’t need to respect her and can do what she wants. I feel sorry for Dimpy she spoiled her baby too much and now she’s suffering the consequences. Riy needs to listen or she will have issues with the other monkeys.
@sonyabilledo4303 Жыл бұрын
Riy will adjust eventually. Dimpy is a first time mother and has made many mistakes. Riy's behavior is the product of Dimpy's parenting. Once Dimpy has a new baby, Riy will put on her big girl pants and become an obsessive protective sister. Violence is never the best option. Dimpy needs to say NO, maybe with a little bite, then groom and hug little insecure Riy in order to help her transition to this new stage in her life. This macaque behavior seems to work the best. The older mothers who have high infant survival rate seem to implement these tactics. Gypse has used violence (abandonment, slaps, nips and aggressive skin breaking bites) which then created traumatized, timid, insecure offspring. None of the mothers that are violent to their babies produce well-adjusted offspring. Remember Deenly was also impossible last year. She harassed Reddy, Berti and siblings often. Dopey was a mischievous rascal who invented new tactics to persuade Reddy to let him nurse. He wimped and whined too. Riy is just more verbal than most but not as mischievous as Dopey. This year, Joy is also a cry baby but Spotty is not regulating Joy as much as Dimpy is with Riy. Remember, Gaby had a really hard time with Gingy, her first son. It is true every year Gaby's babies are enormous and extremely hyperactive. She was challenged every second with each out of total control baby, but her parenting skills have improved. Gingy is a good son and big boy Georgy is thriving. Gabby is lucky for the first time ever. Gilly is normal in size and not hyperactive. It must feel like a vacation for her this year. It is true, Riy squeaks and sometimes hoots but not like Scooby. Scooby hooted very loudly and constantly like a metronome. Lol It's so nice you feel for Dimpy. I on the other hand feel for Riy. True, Riy's constant verbal whining would put me over the edge. I'm a mom more like Dolly. No is no, maybe is maybe, and yes is yes. My kids were never ever whiners. All the human whiny kids I have known through the years are like that because of their parents. Macaques and humans are different but we all are primates and have some similarities. Bad parenting and whining looks like one of them to me.
@georgiegirl4103 Жыл бұрын
I agree! Although it looks harsh Gypsy will really bite or slap her kids, and they stop all whining and demanding. I think Dimpy should have done the same! Gypsy is strong enough to ignore the babies screaming as we have all seen. Maybe Dimpy isn't able to do that? Either way, there are just some babies like Scooby that will not/cannot graduate. They are either dead soon after like Riy or disappear like Scooby...Very sad, I hope Dimpy's next baby is better!
