I cite my sources and they may differ than other people's accounts, so I don't guarantee the actual accuracy of my videos.
1995 Saw White Zombie release their final studio album Astrocreep 2000 Songs of Love, Destruction and Other Synthetic Delusions of the Electric Head. The album would be the group’s most commercially successful record peaking at number 6 on the billboard album charts. To support the album, White Zombie would hit the road with a variety of bands including the Toadies, and today’s topic the Melvins. It seemed like an odd pairing and it was. The melvins had a horrendous time opening for white zombie and frontman king buzzo would describe it as one of his worst experiences.. Today let’s take a look at what happened on that tour.
In 1995 the melvins were playing support to several high profile bands including today’s topic White Zombie and Nine Inch Nails, a band we’ll talk about later in the video. One year prior the melvins released their album Stoner Witch.
The band would spend almost two months on the road with White Zombie from May to June of 1995. And also on the bill for part of the tour was reverend horton heat and babes in toyland. One review I stumbled upon said the following at one of the shows of the tour in philadelphia. saying “”Considering today’s lackluster stage shows White Zombie over the top blowout was a joy. “Opening act the Melvins went over everyone’s heads and knew it. When the group pointed out that philadelphia was home to the mutter museum few in the audience had ever heard of the famous repository of medical oddities.
In a separate review i found online from robohara.com who wrote
The Melvins have always been known as being a little bizarre if not temperamental, and when the anxious crowd began chanting “WHITE. ZOMBIE. WHITE. ZOMBIE.” about two songs into the Melvins’ set, lead guitarist/vocalist King Buzzo announced something to the effect of, “Here’s our new song called ’30 Minutes of Feedback’.” With that, the band leaned their instruments up against the speakers causing a terrible squeal. The sound man, I suspect not knowing if this was part of the band’s regular show or not, let the instruments scream for a minute or two before cutting the sound. Everyone in the crowd looked at one another, slightly bewildered. A few minutes later the stage was cleared, White Zombie came on, and that was the end of that.
Back in 2012 the Melvins were out on tour and frontman King Buzzo published stories from the road on Spin.com where he discussed the tour with White Zombie in detail saying
“We played a lot of shows with them [Babes In Toyland] back then, and they were always fun. We did a tour with them and White Zombie, and we both got treated like fucking dogshit on that tour by the powers that be. It was a massively unnecessary situation of pointless rock-star behavior. I don’t know what was going through his [Rob Zombie’s] head, but if making enemies is what you set out to do, well, mission accomplished.
I’ve been around people you would consider a rock star, like the guys in Kiss, and they never behaved like that. It just makes you hate lower-level fuckheads like Rob Zombie even more. If I got treated like that by the fing mailman, I’d hate his guts.
The dumbest thing I've ever seen a fellow musician do. Man I don't even know where to begin. One time we were on a tour, I'm assuming it was the worst tour we ever did, which was opening for White Zombie & there sound guy made us stop sound checking because it was bothering Rob as he was eating. I remember thinking what is he eating a fabrige egg omlette, are you joking. Whatever. There was endless amount of that stuff. Endless, endless. I don't know people for some reason they either don't believe those stories or they think that since we haven't sold millions of records our opinion doesn't count.
It was in 2014 that King Buzzo spoke to the phoenix new times where he once again slammed Rob Zombie saying
I mean, do you think on the White

I saw The Melvins open for Gwar in '92 (with Tool as the first opener) & the same shit happened. The crowd started chanting "Gwar" and "Too Slow" 10 minutes into their set. Buzzo said "so we're playing too slow for ya?" & the band proceeded to play super SUPER slow to piss off the crowd, and played slower & slower as the crowd got more & more pissed. Sucked not getting to see their regular set but it's hilarious in hindsight.

I went to see Primus live in 1993 and the Melvins opened up. Houdini had just come out, so they had some buzz. They started their show with at least 10 minutes of feedback and noise. People were not pleased and were yelling, “Primus!” I just watched in awe as they built up to the heaviest shit I had ever heard live - it was either Hooch or Hag Me. Blew my little 15 year old mind. They totally swayed the crowd that night. A molasses slow mosh pit to match the music. I’d never heard anything like it. Bought Houdini and Lysol the very next day. I can’t remember the last time I listened to Primus, but Melvins is still in heavy rotation.

I’m all for people being able to have their own opinion, but this is an objectively stupid statement. If you “suck”, you don’t typically have labels lining up to release any of your 7,000 full length albums. These guys have played more shows and released more material than your three favorite bands combined. But, yeah…they “suck”.

I also witnessed a very similar situation in 1998. I was 16 years old when I saw the Melvins open for Tool in Sacramento on their AEnima tour. During the Melvins set the crowd started chanting “go home!” And “you suck!” And Buzzo just turned around to his amp and produced the nastiest feedback for what seemed like forever. The really insane thing was 3 songs into Tool’s set, Buzz came out on stage to join Tool for two songs, and everyone cheered when he came out. I was like “didn’t you idiots just boo him off the stage a half hour ago?!” I mean I know they were there for Tool, but c’mon, it’s the fucking Melvins!!!

Houdini is pretty shitty compared to most Melvins records, but that was intentional. They were being promoted by Kurt Cobain and it was their first major label release, so Buzzo went more commercial. Houdini was, by FAR, their most heavily-promoted album. So most people, being told to like it, consider it their best.

He kind of is. And you can see it all over his early music videos... At the height of popularity, with Sean and Jay looking to do one more album, he decided to dissolve the band to go solo. It was weird to someone on the outside... And the music he initially released was basically the exact same style of music he had been releasing the previous decade. But worse. White Zombie was dipping in to Progressive Metal. Every member contributed to the sound and all the pieces complimented each other. Sean's bass-lines, riffs and hooks were frequently their signature. The Drums were always driving along and Yeunger's Guitar was frequently wandering, screaming and great especially when it came back to accent Sean. And Rob's weird barely decipherable moaning growl fit into it well enough. All that really stood out in Rob's solo effort was Rob. Except when he stopped singing for a second to let a decent riff or hook take center stage briefly. And Rob's singing isn't strong enough to carry a band's sound.

Saw the Melvins open for GWAR in 1992. I’m not sure that I or the crowd really got them either. And it was a pretty mixed group as no one knew what to expect from the headliner. Skinheads, skate punks, metal heads, etc. Definitely not die hards or a mean spirited group. They even crowd surfed later during GWAR’s joke opening band (which was slaughtered halfway through, of course). “The more you throw things, and the more you boo, the less I care.”, said Buzzo in a mock sobbing tone. You really have to hear them, and draw your own conclusion. It seems almost like the black licorice of rock music. A few people absolutely love it. Super high end restaurants specialize in taste-memories, like a summer day or burning tires or stuff. Maybe it’s like that.

I also remember the Melvins pointing out a heckler and saying he had "one extra chromosome." I don't remember the feedback comment at the end of it, but their set was definitely running together for me by that point. I know bands hate doing the promo routine, but it does pay off. If you are a headliner and you ask a band you like to be an opening act, you almost owe it to them. A lot of issues could be solved by the headliners going on local radio before a show and letting their fans know about the opening act. Maybe hype them up a bit, or at least tell the people something like "They're different than us, they may not be what you expect, but they are good so give them half a chance."

@@GrahamPablo i just don't see a headliner going out to advertise for each of many openings acts along their tour. People are likely going to the show primarily for the headliner in many cases. I don't think his suggestion of what to say would really be effective either "they're different, not what you expect, give them a chance". That wouldn't sell it but aside from that it's just not their responsibility (or necessary for them) to hype up their supporting acts It's just natural too. The structure of show is for opening 2 acts to usually start to slowly hype up crowd for headliner (not the opposite). Many people will be arriving still during first opening act at least. People won't know any of openers songs in many cases so they can't sing along or know when beat is going to change dancing. It's an opportunity the headliner already gives openers to support them, not other way around, and it's up to openers to put on amazing show and get crowd going. If they don't do that, then it could be on opening act, could be a closed minded audience, or bad selection for who the opener is stylistically, but again people ultimately just didn't come for them. They fill the time until it starts to get late, people are all there (often with some drinks in them), people are comfortable yet apprehensive for their favorite band of many years to finally come out. the lights go out and 15,000 waiting people finally let it all out to see their band on stage, a slow riff enters, some smoke and lights, and then BOOM into strong first track for headliner's set. Crowd goes nuts. The opener is just not gonna get that by definition and there's not much that can be done for it. Big bands don't want to open, they headline their own tours. it's a way smaller bands get some exposure and again it's on them to sell themselves.

This puts some interesting context into the time I saw Rob and the Melvins at Soundwave festival. Rob was on first, Melvins were due to start at a certain time on the stage right next to Zombie, but Zombie went over time, by quite a while, at least 10 min. Melvins took the stage when they were supposed to, and just leaned forward as much as they could on the stage to kind of.. look at Zombie over on the next stage. Then eventually just started playing some droney sounds until Rob finally finished. However not convinced about playing to tape, entirely at least. Live Rz sounded pretty out of breath a few times, I know what the studio vocals sounds like, and it wasn't that. He sounds the same on other live recordings I've heard too. I don't doubt there's some level of assistance though with backing vocals or something.

Mainstream is meainstream because it has universal appeal. Music is also a way of self identification and not many people identify with heavy distorted guitars. Maybe to you it all looks cool- to me all I see is some fat dude and his bend overendulging themselves in what they like to play. It is as fun as watching a high school band having a jam session. I dont find anything special about that band. None of those people has any charisma, any showmanship, any talent that I havent seen. There are metal bands that shred. vocals that sing in several octaves range, drummers that eat little children with 2 bass pedals. Melvins is average in every aspect. Something any of those bands can do in their sleep. So why would I wanna pay money so see somoene do something I myself could do easily. All they had to do is be on the right place at the right time at some 100 people club to inspire a future rock star so I he could surpass me in every level and then pay his respects by wanting to produce my break out album. Melvin's opened for tool in Dallas 98. They were rocking out and even had a decent pit ragin. Unfortunately for the three songs they played most the crowd just chanted " fuck you put tool on". Melvin's walked off stage and hail satanas was played on the loud speaker for an hour before tool came on. I was kinda pissed Melvin's we're doin good but crowd wasn't having it. The Melvin's are a highly underrated band.

Another thing that's hilarious is that Melvins opened for Tool a few months after the NIN debacle, at the SAME VENUE. There were some boos: I mean, NIN and Tool in 95? It was 1/2 the same audience. They played like two songs and walked off stage, and turned on this 5 minute loop of a reading of some.satanic text, and played it for like 30 min. The crowd was PISSED. Then, Maynard came out dressed and acting like a minister. He coaxed buzz out to join him on a tool song. But, yeah, Melvins/Dallas/95 was JUST priceless.

Melvins never seemed to get the idea of winning a tough crowd over. Throwing a hissy fit and walking off stage is completely unprofessional, and sh-tty to the fans that ARE there to see you. Alice in Chains dealt with the same thing opening clash of the titans, but they grit their teeth and played through it. I've met Buzz, and he had a very crappy attitude. I've heard the same from others. Throwing shade at NIN and calling them mtv baby rock is hilarious to me, knowing the controversy they generated with their videos. If anything they should get credit for pushing the boundaries of what you can do in video. You can't deny that Reznor takes his art seriously, and deserves that respect.

Buzz is just a smart ass, always has been. I've met him as well. He has strong opinions and can rub people the wrong way,, but he can be personable and very cool. They come from the early 80s punk scene and it's a whole different mentality. No fanboy rockstar worship. I've seen them in a big venue and they were great. Dale knows how to dial in an amazing drum sound. It's not everybody's cup of tea. I guess I'm a music snob but not everybody "gets" it. Its not mainstream music. I'm reminded of the Ramones opening for Sabbath. I read the audience despised them, throwing shit etc. As far as NIN they've become great over the years but I saw them on the first Lollapalooza tour early on. They were awful. Everyone was touting them as this edgy new band and it was laughable. A lot of forced anger, throwing nice equipment around. Very contrived. There's a great story of Mike Patton sticking up for the Melvins when they opened up for FNM. Worth reading

My sentiments exactly. If you’re not a fan of the headliner’s fans, don’t take it out on your fans. I know quite a few people who go to see the opening bands who care less for the headliner. I saw The Melvins open for GWAR in Orlando. The show was sold out and the line to get in was wrapped around the block. Just as we were about to get into the venue, the show started. Then two Melvin fans were begging to be let in,. Saying they were there only to The Melvins. They were told no. I saw them crowd surfing at the end of their set. Can you imagine how they would feel, if when they got in they heard guitar reverb because fudge the headliner’s fans?

@@spidey1z Yah man. Imagine if every band that opened for slayer did that lol. They have a reputation for being incredibly hard to open for, because of the fans. It's not a normal reaction, having a hissy fit I mean. You can try and be a hipster about it and say "were just about the music maaaaaan" but touring a band IS a business, and pulling stunts like that is incredibly bad for your reputation. If buzz had any feelings about not breaking through or being bigger, having that attitude didn't help. Talking about industry guys making it hard for them, well no sh-t dude, you were doing the same for them. Because Melvins are truly a punk band and don’t give a fuck about you or your opinions - you’re just another meatbag with an opinion. Kurt Cobain worshipped the Melvins to the point of becoming a roady just to be near them. He even played percussion on some Melvins tracks. Kurt Cobain was a self admitted sellout and that doesn’t go over well with some people who were part of the original Seattle scene... I know Buzz played a big part in a lot of those bands rise to fame and a lot of them now act like they don’t even know him anymore when he went out of his way to support them early on.
