I have adhd and autism and have been habitually burnt out probably ever since I started school when I was a child, I'm 24 now. For me it's not just work that contributes to my burnout, it's everything that comes along with being a human and just existing in our society. Interacting with people is exhausting, feeding myself, showering, exercising, thinking even contributes to it for me. Everything feels exhausting. I hope the system will change to be better for everyone.

i am 15 and feel very much the same. i feel like i have hit a plateau at this point because every other time i felt burnt out i was able to claw my way out of the muck. but this time it seems i can’t. the brain fog is heavy. my executive function is basically non existent. and my mental and physical health is really suffering because of all this. even me trying so hard to figure it out and create a plan of action to get out of this is so exhausting i’m not making much progress. i’m glad i’m not alone.

@@lukewarmmayonnaise7318 plan less neurotically and try meditation, also watch this guy's video on dopamine and delayed reward theory. I'm 22, same shit except I have withdrawn from society since 2018 when I got my highschool degree. Good luck and invest in yourself.

A lot of companies will never solve burnout because of 2 reasons. First is the owners greed Second is the yes men/hustlers

Happened to me 20 years ago; after being overworked but not having the courage to raise the issue, here's what my pattern started to look like. 1. Go to work 2. return home 3. Bed At work I could just manage the bare minimum. If I picked up a book at home and tried to read, I wouldn't last even 5 minutes without experiencing mental exhaustion. I was unable to focus on ANYTHING without getting exhausted; my hobbies went out of the window, and I could just about watch TV and zone out, that's all I really did while I just lay there in bed wondering what on Earth was going on. No recreation, no social activity, hardly left home outside of traveling to and from work, nothing. - this lasted for about 6 months until I started to be able to focus again. I didn't know it was burnout initially because I didn't know anything about that. But with the little energy I had I managed to find out through the internet. I didn't seek help or anything, but made sure I was much more careful about trying to handle too much of a load after that experience.

If you don’t mind me asking how did your get out of the burnout? I’m going through something similar and wondering when it will end and can even get back to my reading and hobbies that I enjoy. I’m exhausted.

I've been habitually burned out for at least 5 years. I'm finally starting to come out of it. Very very slowly. He was spot on. I was apathetic about everything. I didn't recognize who I was, and I didn't see a future that was any different. Every day was foggy. I woke up feeling pure indifference for everything. I went through the day, giving the bare minimum, and I was still completely exhausted . I didn't really care if I lost my job or my home or my stuff. I didn't care about eating or cleaning or my friends or family. I didn't care how I looked. I didn't care about the well-being of people around me. I didn't care. There's nothing worse because I wasn't living.

It's strange trying to understand human motivation- sometimes it comes so easily and other times it is impossible to find. Working hard is often really satisfying but it's scary how it can suddenly become exhausting. Love your vids they are really thought provoking and informative!

Thanks for this thoughtful piece. Cognitive load is sorely under estimated. Trying to resolve the gap between the ideals of work versus reality, we burn our cognition. "Burn" because, complexity is like fuel for problem solvers, and, you're hired to solve problems, right? It sparks not one question but many... Why isn't this working? Is this right? Is that real? How do I use this? How is it suppose to be? We think there must be a better way... and on and on... But this kind of burning behavior happens for every gap perceived accelerating us toward burnout. Burnout is often accompanied by the feeling of not being able to think of a way, not knowing what to do and sometimes shame not knowing what should be done... To me complexity fuels cognitive load which leads to burnout - we need to get better at sensing and measuring it.

Great video! This is something that many healthcare workers face. It is terrible for the workers and those that they care for. As a nursing student, my classmates and I have a hard time putting ourselves first. I think that's a big factor for nurses being burned out because we are expected to put others first. You bring up a good point about changing the system because it is another major factor in burnout when the system creates an atmosphere that leads to poor outcomes.

you are treating a job as if its a part of yourself. ITS NOT! the people you take care of, will still be taken care of, if you leave your job today. Stop allowing greedy hospital administrations to fleece you. You are all being ripped off by working long hours with a skeleton crew. Guess what WILL hurt patients? Allowing hospitals to run on skeleton crews. Dont just "put up with it" because that behavior is hurting and literally killing people. You all need to stop being caregivers and instead fight your hospitals to ensure adaquate staffing and patient care. The way it works now is that patient care and safety is less important than profit and cost.

I'm a machine rapair tech in a manufacturing company. Specifically a machining area of this company. I also work nights, which I am NOT naturally suited for. We are so perpetually far behind our target for production that we've been seven day weeks since even before the pandemic shutdowns, which also didn't help. Technically, we have a six day week every third week, but the "off day" is for preventative maintenance, which is a primary function of my job, so I don't get that day off. We have systems in place to give people weekend days off at the team level, but we're chronically understaffed due to the seven day schedule, and people either don't want to apply here, or end up quitting because of it due to burnout, so we're rarely able to take advantage of it... We call my job in particular the "golden shackle", because the base pay is amazing, and on top of that we're paid time-and-a-half for anything worked 40-48 hours a week, and double time for anything 48 and over. We routinely work anywhere between 60 and 84 hours a week, so you can imagine those numbers are nice, even after getting r@p*d with taxes. I love the money, and at this rate, I can retire in 10 years pretty comfortably, and before age 50. I just want to be able to see my family though. Especially while my nieces and nephews are still young. I'd also like to be able to start a family of my own, but it's hard enough to date working nights, let alone seven days a week. Most relationships don't last long because of this. If it weren't for certain financial obligations, I'd have most likely quit some time ago... It's all just fucking exhausting.

notes: what is work burnout? excessive committment and effort to a particular duty we have. comes from thinking that u are doing whateveryone is expecting from you. ur family wants 16 hr days. ur customers want 16 hour days. society wants 16 hour days. ur not doing anything wrong. ur just doing what is normal. what is the solution? what is the balance? stop working hard? or work less? can we be happy without work? we come from nature. we come from gardens. we were born in and for cultivating our world. we will not be fulfilled without adventure. without facing whatever approaches and appears from the unknown. we cant stop working. we cant stop producing. we cant stop contributing. we need balance. exhaustion isnt necessary. stress is to be expected. chronic stress is not. we need balance. balance looks like detachment. balance looks like flying high and living with a light heart. if we dont detach then all failure is total failure. when action A is our entire life then failure to do action A is an entire failure at life

I have learned that while workplace will definitely bring on burnout, if your home situation is not ideal, it'll speed up & even a change of workplace won't help out that much. At this point it'll be a struggle to maintain one's sanity (or what's left of it).

I had this for years and years and one time I tried to reach out to my dad and brother and it ended with my brother driving a chair into my head and trying to throw my down some stairs the police coming and taking me away to the watchouse because my brother and dad both turned on me and made me look bad.. I also ended up on the street over it and had to sleep in my car and go to work to keep my job. Had to sleep in motels and hostels and pay all of my money on accommodation. Had governments trying to suck money out of me and all sorts of issues with burnout. Had an extreme level of stress for a very long time in life due to extreme domestic violence with my dad bashing my mum and me fighting my dad my whole life because he was a psycho man who was extremely angry. All the people I met in life were rough and tough people. This burnout thing happens because there is too much adversity and believe me there is no support out there for it
