I finally got to see this the other day and loved it. It was completely unexpected. A chef who feels deeply unappreciated, created pretentious food he doesn't care about, takes out his ire upon snobbish customers he despises. It's a thing of beauty. There’s two reasons he let Margo/Lisa go. The first is that she asked for a Cheeseburger, and in his office were all those pictures of him cooking cheeseburgers and being extremely happy. He even smiled while making the burger, which means she brought him back, for a moment, to when he enjoyed making food for people. The second reason is that she wasn’t wealthy. She wasn’t a part of the upper class wealth that turned him into this emotionless robot who has no joy. There was no reason for her to die. However, if she hadn’t been smart enough to ask for the cheeseburger, he likely would have been content having her die.
@ranniemanangan5371 Жыл бұрын
And also since she's from a humble background, she has a different manner of eating... For she wants to be satisfied by being full and doesn't care for the techniques used on the preparation of the food and how it was served, like how she doesn't like the breadless bread dish because there's no bread in it and she sees it as non sense...

Great reaction as always! Also, if you're wondering, the key to the ending is your question about the photo at 25:26 - because the photo shows that the only time the Chef was truly HAPPY was back when he was cooking simple food like burgers. So Margot intentionally asks for a cheeseburger, which gives him a chance to recapture that joy of cooking one last time. And he's so grateful for getting to feel that way again, he agrees to let her leave. :)

Margo/Erin lied about her name cause she probably chooses an identity that better fit the experience she provides to her clients. It’s hinted at that when she explains to chef how she took the identity of that old guy’s daughter to satisfy him. With Tyler, she went with a “fancy” name even though it doesn’t fit her. Chef even said she’s not a Margo
@Hey_Jamie Жыл бұрын
Wtf are you talking about?! She didn’t “take the identity of his daughter”. She literally just pretended to be who he told her to be. And she did the same with Tyler. I ended up going to a event that showed The Menu and we ended up with a three/four course dinner where we had crafted whiskey drinks and the food was inspired by the film. It was such a fun event to attend but there was a lot of salt in all the food so afterwards I needed a lot of water to counter it. They gave us a peach froth with cream in an oyster when we got there with champagne, we then had a popcorn bucket with samphire and seaweed inspired by the course with the rocks and I can’t remember the drink name we had, waiting for us in our seats was six sauces inspired by the sauces course but with nachos. The last one was a burger with an old fashioned. It was such a good event to attend

Speaking of murders on islands, I think you might like the miniseries 'And Then There Were None', definitely the best adaptation of the book by Agatha Christie. Over three episodes 10 strangers are invited to an island by someone they don't know but who claim to know someone they do know. When they get there they are each accused of killing someone. Then one by one, they are all killed off in the manner resembling the poem 'Ten Little Soldier Boys' (as it's now known). But who is actually doing the killings?

@my_randomology Жыл бұрын
The reason the burger plan worked was because Erin gave Slowik the one thing he hadn't had in a long time: happiness in his craft. She remembered the photo in his office where he was genuinely smiling while working at a simple burger place. She made it so the last thing he would ever cook in his life would be the thing that first made him fall in love with cooking. And she was a GOOD customer at the end, something Slowik also mentioned earlier. She played by his rules at the end and gave him a dose of cold water, and when you work in a kitchen, you CANNOT bullshit your way through the day. If something doesn't work, you fix it, and she hit him right where it hurts. And he proved to both her and himself that he really could cook something simple and delicious that was a joy to eat, and Slowik is a professional first and foremost. And when a guest asks for the food to go, you respect that simple request, especially since she was appreciative and polite and admitted he could cook. And yeah, no one else could have pulled it off. Everyone else was a snob and would never have ordered something as low class as just a cheeseburger.

I had nonidea what I was getting into but I'm also a big fan of John Leguizamo and an up and coming fan of Anya so I had to see this. I really did enjoy it and the overall message of the movie. Btw Margo was an escort which explains why she lied about her name and birthplace and why Tyler paid her. She was a last minute add on as the other girl dumped him.. Margo was the only one that was able to outwit Julian, she saw the photos of him as a young chef and saw that he was happy, he spent the whole movie saying negative things, he let her go because she brought him a sense of happiness again that he hadn't felt since he started his career. Also, I recommend Red Dragon also with Ralph. Prequel to Silence of the Lambs... I totally have a photo of Anya eating a cheeseburger 🍔 as my fb cover photo.

You said that Tyler deserved a more painful death, but I think his death was the most brutal of all of the guests'. Not only did his idol completely shatter his dreams and aspirations, he prevented him from participating in the grand finale that he knew was going to happen by ordering him to off himself early on. He lost his chance to be a part of The Menu because of who he was as a person. In its own twisted logic, it can't get worse than that.

Honestly, the fact you're open to admitting you don't automatically get all the themes makes you... kinda the ideal customer for the likes of Slowik. Everyone that has worked in the business has run into the type of customers depicted in the movie. Those that all think they're better than you, or think they know as much as you, or even just eat there strictly to criticize you. And because of this, I always feel bad if I have to send a dish back, because the people in the back may genuinely be trying, but if it's not right, it should be delt with respectfully.

Regarding Tyler (Nicholas Hoult's character) still joining anyways despite the knowledge of everyone dying, I think he was already wanting to die. Remember, he said he broke up with his previous girlfriend, and he hired Margot (Anya Taylor-Joy) to come with him not out of malice but because he was desperate to do anything to be there. That would also explain why he unalived himself immediately after Chef whispered to him, it was Chef giving the green light for what Tyler was wanting to do the whole time.

25:28 That making a simple yet tasty food and made with love and passion is what Slowik wanted but as he became a celebrity cooking expensive food for the elite, his passion vanished as he knew he would never meet their standards because they don't even regard the food. To them this is an event just so they can say they've been there. That's why Margot's cheeseburger order mattered. It follows Bales character who is from a rich british family living in Shanghai when Japan invades China, becoming a POW during WW2. Its a phenomenal movie and as much as a movie buff as you are i know how much you’ll appreciate the beautiful cinematography and the soundtrack is amazing as well. Its beautiful, sad, funny, everything you look for in a movie and with Spielberg directing you cant go wrong. Ben Stiller is also in it although hes a more minor character. I dont know how much the draw for it will be as far as views go, but maybe look it up and see if it’s something youd be interested in. Really hope you check it out, it will not disappoint!

I just saw The Menu on HBO last night. I heard a lot of comparisons to Midsommer. I have yet to see that movie, but I can tell you that when The Menu makes that hard left turn without giving away spoilers, you are left on the edge the rest of the movie like WTF is going to happen next. Lol. This movie is best going in not knowing with it is about.

I always love your reactions. I watched DoctorcanonVO's reaction. She is a trained cook. She talks some about how the dishes have more meaning than most people not familiar with culinary arts miss. It made me appreciate the movie more.

Probably it wasn't just me, but during the movie none of the food of the Menú had any appeal to me, idk something about the way it was presented made me think of something cold and flavourless, on the contrary the cheeseburger made my mouth water. The movie also made me think of something the owner of the restaurant, where I got my first job, said to me "clients are gonna treat you badly because they want their food and they'll treat you badly because you brought it to them, try not to take it to heart"

I kinda love the construction of the scene because it makes me think about how we (well me at least)as impoverished people always having to cook every day and in short amount of times ,savoring every meal, meanwhile, characters like this… THIS IS WHY I LOVE THIS SCENE MAN who has access to all the money to follow his career, lose his gf, (high key after rewatching a lot of times, I think he 💀 her) go to this event, knowing everyone would 💀 -!? He has been following the chef and his career for years?! He focused so many years on someone else’s career, someone else’s life, but still can’t even cook for himself, much less other people. They ate the scene up. You ate up this reaction. Keep coming with the good stuff💥. 21:50
