I think this is in the top five of my best looking cars list. In a decade of curvy, gloopy cars this stands out a mile. Elegant, understated, classy, lovely. It’s one of those cars that looks so good it doesn’t need all those creases and lumps and all that other nonsense that car designers attach to cars in a desperate attempt to improve their looks. This is quite an upgrade for Steve Berry from 90s Top Gear’s wife after that rattly Peugeot they used to have. I enjoyed this video, I usually do but the most enjoyment for me was derived in imagining how long it took our hero Steve Berry from 90s Top Gear to pack his props and how much stuff he had to cram in through the little hole in the back of that Merc. I would very much like to own a Mercedes CLK of this generation, one with a nice, big, lazy engine and a very nice stereo. I’d waft about feeling like a successfully small engineering business owner in 1996 and what can be better than that? I think a sign of a good car is if you don’t mind sitting in traffic in it and that’s important as in the UK traffic is omnipresent and this passes that test. I’d sit there thinking about how lovely my car was and whether to get the old lathe refurbished or get a new one. It’s a shame about the rust. Chris Evans is very good on the radio, whether he’s your cup of tea or not you can’t deny his skill. But he’s not great on the TV. It’s the same the other way round, people who are good in the TV aren’t necessarily good on the radio. There are exceptions of course, but what gets my goat is Radio 2 have stuffed their schedules with a load of comedians who you see on all the usual panel shows and stuff and they’re just not very good. Maybe we should continue the 90s theme into light entertained put everyone back where they were in 1996, Chris Evans on the radio, Jonathan Ross on the telly, James Corden in obscurity. Before I go, may I commend Steve Berry from 90s Top Gear for his commitment to his audience. It must take him ages to pack all his props and get changed so often. Five stars.

These reviews are extremely witty & enjoyable and you find some interesting cars to show us. I didn't think the CLK was a replacement for the W124 coupe though as it didn't look big enough to be a coupe version of the W210 E-Class? I saw it more as a C-Class coupe size with some engineering from the E-Class. The 90's saw a lot of coupes like that, not a direct sloping back version of a saloon as in the 70's & 80's but a one off body shape with tried&trusted mechanical bits. The FIAT Coupe being a classic example. I'd sold a '93 W124 E320 Coupe & went to look at a CLK about 15 years ago. It was 5 years newer, lower mileage & lower price than my departed 124. So lesser in age, miles & cost but much more so, lesser in quality, a lot lesser! I realised then, that was the infamous decade where Mercs were being built to a price not to a standard. I walked away & didn't bother with it , was a manual too which was truly awful , properly agricultural gearbox, but a decade & a half later after seeing you review this, a CLK is looking more appealing. The fact prices haven't increased must in 15 years seems like a good thing or is that worrying , and just a reflection that they weren't very good all along and few people want them?

Me and my son watched the film the plank 2 years ago at Christmas, he loved it . Thrashing the clk reminds me of my 2 ltr Kompressor, from many years ago . If this channel doesnt do well i will eat my hat .

In the mid nineties I worked for a heating control company and the vast majority of the clients were nursing homes and every owner or manager drove one of these including the owner of a home in Doncaster who we spotted removing dead flies from the bonnet of his black CLK with a green pan scourer.

Garbage, rot boxes, i had one from almost new, rust started appearing everywhere, arches, sills, side mouldings, Mercedes replaced doors, front wings under warranty, repaired arches, and repainted the whole car, i got shot as soon as i got it back and never been near a Merc since, man have they fallen away in terms of quality and reliability, shocking

In the early 00's my dumb phone's text alert was a low quality recording of Steve saying "Ducati" . (I had a cagiva then and uneducated folk used to walk past and say oh Ducati. Much improved Steve. Much more relaxed presentation and the audio is not clipping. A dead cat microphone cover would remove the wind noise and perhaps consider another camera to create more interest.

The 430 V8 engine suited the CLK better than the V6 or underpowered 4 pots. There's a lovely convertible 430 for sale near me for 4k with relatively low miles in good condition.

Disappointing that they all rusted away, bad for mercedes reputation, then it didn't take long for VAG and Audi to find out how to make cars that rusted, when everyone else got rustproofing sorted (including Fiat!)

Absolutely not the best coupe of the 90's... Peugeot 406 coupe, Fiat Coupe, VW Corrado... The list is bloomin endless ! I would place this car at near bottom of the list.
