Makes it even more important to teach our children how to resist specious ads, and to use logic to differentiate between needs and wants. Thanks, guys.

Politicians are using this effect as well. Lies repeated at least 3x in each exposure is effective.

Being aware is step 1. Step 2 is taking steps to reform/eliminate such exploitative systems in our society, because as long as we are human we will be susceptible to these sorts of psychological manipulation as much of it is unconscious.

Subliminal messaging, not in just ads, but movies, music, social media, and all forms of information we process is also subject to this effect. For example, if we see people punished for a specific opinion over and over again, we will eventually conclude that that opinion is wrong, regardless of debate, logic, or data.

Banksy's theory that ads "belong" to you is pretty useless to most people unless they are a graffiti artist. Instead, in the Western world where "freedom" is so highly prized, it's more useful to see ads as an infringement of our perceptual freedom - they capture our attention without our consent. Whether it's the freedom to admire a nice view, or the freedom to read or watch media without distraction, advertisements violate our public spaces and our media.

There are certain things that we are exposed to, whether we want it or not. However, we can decide what we expose ourselves to in our free time and especially on the Internet.

This is also why representation in media is such a hot topic. If you're, for bland example, a purple people eater, then being represented in media will lead to being accepted more easily by society. On the other end, people who believe that eating purple people is morally wrong would prefer this not happen.

@@sprouts it's funny, but sometimes the opposite thing happens: the more you see a certain image, person, etc, the more you distrust and dislike it, thinking smth like "those are everywhere, I'm fed up with them, leave me alone!" or "that's a manipulation, stop forcing me into liking it" And as far as I know, this pattern is not that rare. And it works even if initially you felt neutral about that thing you start seeing everywhere Maybe more alert and pessimistic people are more prone to this pattern

Of all the countless years I've been watching videos on youtube, I can only count on one hand the things ads showed me that I actually would have wanted or would have a use for. If the ad was unskipable, I'd immediately LOATHE whatever is being advertised no matter what it was.

Honestly ads that are un-skippable are like new songs on the radio that get repeatedly played. Its not that they are good, it that the public is forced to endure them when there are other things people like more

All ads are disliked by their intrusive nature. So why do advertisers still do it?
@braincuriosities
@braincuriosities Жыл бұрын
They are not disliked enough to be hated, they are more of an annoyance. It works because if you're constantly exposed to a certain brand for a type of product, let's say for a soap for the dishwasher, next time you go to the supermarket and you need soap for the dishwasher, you will be more likely to buy a brand that you have already seen somewhere over those you know nothing about, because humans crave familiarity, that's basically how it works

I'm with banksy Ads can burn down for all I care. They are paradoxically a cancer on our time and mental space, yet they are the things that enable this messed up system to barely function. Without ads there would be no KZbin, but KZbin without ads would be such a much nicer experience.

The problem is that everyone needs to live. Without ads there is no platform, with no platform, no content. Ideally everyone would be paid fairly for educating others online but the only way to be able to live from it is ads, which is really sad

Well, I completely stopped watching broadcast television over a decade ago because I could no longer tolerate seeing that asinine insurance lizard on every commercial break on every show on every channel all day every day year after year so THAT didn't work. Even skipping it with a DVR every time was just too annoying.

Yes! Please ban billboards, or at least make them super rare and only for smaller companies, like a local shop or something, not the 1456th store chain that shamelessly donates to republicans putting up walls or pigs. The amount of ads we are exposed to it's frankly absurd, I dare you to try and look at 4 videos on youtube with no premium or adblocker on any device, you'll grow tired real quickly
