Lecture 6 Surah Al-An’am • The cattle- long list of prohibited and allowed cattle’s mentioned. • Revealed in Makka (Makki surah). • 165 verses. • Umar RA said this surah is one of the glories of Quran. • 3 main points discussed. • 1. Allah and his oneness. • 2. Prophethood. • 3. Day of Judgment. • Powerful Surah. • Challenges the pagans. • Talks about their stubbornness to not accept the truth. Verses about thowheed (oneness of Allah). • V.1 [All] praise is [due] to Allah, who created the heavens and the earth and made the darkness and the light. Then those who disbelieve equate [others] with their Lord. • V.6., v13. , v18. The greatness of Allah and his power. • V.59. and with Him are the keys of the unseen; none knows them except Him. And He knows what is on the land and in the sea. Not a leaf falls but that He knows it. And no grain is there within the darknesses of the earth and no moist or dry [thing] but that it is [written] in a clear record. • V.60. and it is He who takes your souls by night and knows what you have committed by day. Then He revives you therein [i.e., by day] that a specified term may be fulfilled. Then to Him will be your return; then He will inform you about what you used to do. • V.95. Indeed, Allah is the cleaver of grain and date seeds. He brings the living out of the dead and brings the dead out of the living. That is Allah; so how are you deluded? • V.96. Miracles of his creation, alternation of day and night. • V.97. beauty of stars. • V.102. That is Allah, your Lord; there is no deity except Him, the Creator of all things, so worship Him. And He is Disposer of all things. • V.64. Say, "It is Allah who saves you from it and from every distress; then you [still] associate others with Him." (Optimistic verse). • Allah praises one who turns to Allah at time of calamities rather he criticize the one who turn away from him when the calamity is lifted. • Everything around us is a proof of Allah. Verses about Risalah (Prophethood). • Chosen humans (Prophets), Allah sent them with a book. • V.95. they did not value/do justice to Allah when they said Allah did not sent a prophet. • V.19. v.114. v38. The Quran and Allah made it clear. • V.50. Say, [O Muhammad], "I do not tell you that I have the depositories [containing the provision] of Allah or that I know the unseen, nor do I tell you that I am an angel. I only follow what is revealed to me." Say, "Is the blind equivalent to the seeing? Then will you not give thought?" • V.33. v.34. Allah comforts the prophet. • Those who walk in the footsteps of prophets will undergo persecution. • Comfort people with good words. • Why Allah doesn’t sent more miracles? • Allah sent miracles only to make it clear and if the miracle came and people again disbelieved then it will destroy the people. • V.7. isn’t the Quran a miracle. • If a miracle came there is no second chance. • V.111 And even if We had sent down to them the angels [with the message] and the dead spoke to them [of it] and We gathered together every [created] thing in front of them, they would not believe unless Allah should will. But most of them, [of that], are ignorant. The day of judgement. • V.12, v.31, those who neglect will be losers. • V.94. [It will be said to them], "And you have certainly come to us alone [i.e., individually] as we created you the first time, and you have left whatever we bestowed upon you behind you. And we do not see with you your 'intercessors' which you claimed that they were among you associates [of Allah]. It has [all] been severed between you, and lost from you is what you used to claim.” • V.130. "O company of jinn and mankind, did there not come to you messengers from among you, relating to you My verses and warning you of the meeting of this Day of yours?" They will say, "We bear witness against ourselves"; and the worldly life had deluded them, and they will bear witness against themselves that they were disbelievers. Story of Ibrahim AS. • Argues with his people. • V.79. Indeed, I have turned my face [i.e., self] toward He who created the heavens and the earth, inclining toward truth, and I am not of those who associate others with Allah." • The entire words of Ibrahim AS is in the form of a debate it is not as he was searching for Allah. • V.81 onwards the longest list of prophets. (18 prophets are mentioned by name.) Special notable verses. Asbaab an nusool (why was certain verse revealed). • V.52. and do not send away those who call upon their Lord Morning and afternoon, seeking His countenance. Not upon you is anything of their account and not upon them is anything of your account. So were you to send them away, you would [then] be of the wrongdoers. • Background of this verse. • Some delegates of quraish came to abu talib and said we will accept Islam but only one ideology claimed by prophet ﷺ is not acceptable by them. • It was equality between people that they did not liked. • People convinced prophet ﷺ to invite the elites of quraish. • Then Allah revealed this verse.” do not send away those who call upon their Lord Morning and afternoon, seeking His countenance. Not upon you is anything of their account and not upon them is anything of your account. So were you to send them away, you would [then] be of the wrongdoers.” • See how our view of verse change with understanding context. • It is a proof of true prophethood. The thankfulness we should have to take Allah as the lord. • V.14, v.71the beauty of worshiping him. • V.73, the majesty and his power. The purity of food. • Halal wealth. • Proper slaughtering. • From early Macca verses emphasis on this. • V.141. Purification of wealth by zakath. • V.143-145. Allowed and prohibited animals. (Abrogation of jahiliyya superstitions existed.) • V.118-121. only eat the pure animals and on which Allah’s name has mentioned. Killing of children • V.140. Do not insult other gods • V.108. and do not insult those they invoke other than Allah, lest they insult Allah in enmity without knowledge. Following the majority • V.116 and if you obey most of those upon the earth, they will mislead you from the way of Allah. They follow not except assumption, and they are not but falsifying. The commandments of Allah • V.151-153. The commandments The chapter concludes by reminding of the Day of Judgment. V.160. whoever comes [on the Day of Judgment] with a good deed will have ten times the like thereof [to his credit], and whoever comes with an evil deed will not be recompensed except the like thereof; and they will not be wronged. V.164-165. everyone undergoes a different test. It is an eye opener in terms of understanding the importance and spiritual value of surahtul An'am. Just before i logged on, i was reading the surah aloud to my children who were in bed , and i sadly couldn't connect to irt and here i am listening in awe to the beautiful way in which this surah can lift up your spirits and make you feel blessed to be chosen as a believer by God Almighty. We provide you and will likewise provide them with sustenance; (iv) and do not even draw to things shameful - be they open or secret; (v) and do not slay the soul santified by Allah except in just cause; this He has enjoined upon you so that you may understand; وَلَا تَقۡرَبُوۡا مَالَ الۡيَتِيۡمِ اِلَّا بِالَّتِىۡ هِىَ اَحۡسَنُ حَتّٰى يَبۡلُغَ اَشُدَّهٗ​ ۚ وَاَوۡفُوۡا الۡكَيۡلَ وَالۡمِيۡزَانَ بِالۡقِسۡطِ​ ۚ لَا نُـكَلِّفُ نَفۡسًا اِلَّا وُسۡعَهَا​ ۚ وَاِذَا قُلۡتُمۡ فَاعۡدِلُوۡا وَلَوۡ كَانَ ذَا قُرۡبٰى​​ ۚ وَبِعَهۡدِ اللّٰهِ اَوۡفُوۡا​ ؕ ذٰ لِكُمۡ وَصّٰٮكُمۡ بِهٖ لَعَلَّكُمۡ تَذَكَّرُوۡنَ ۙ‏ (6:152) (vi) and do not even draw near to the property of the orphan in his minority except in the best manner; (vii) and give full measures and weight with justice; We do not burden anyone beyond his capacity; (viii) When you speak, be just, even though it concern a near of kin; (ix) and fulfil the covenant of Allah. That is what He has enjoined upon you so that you may take heed. وَاَنَّ هٰذَا صِرَاطِىۡ مُسۡتَقِيۡمًا فَاتَّبِعُوۡهُ​ ۚ وَلَا تَتَّبِعُوۡا السُّبُلَ فَتَفَرَّقَ بِكُمۡ عَنۡ سَبِيۡلِهٖ​ ؕ ذٰ لِكُمۡ وَصّٰٮكُمۡ بِهٖ لَعَلَّكُمۡ تَتَّقُوۡنَ (6:153) (x) This is My way -that which is straight: follow it, then, and do not follow other paths lest they scatter you from His path. This is what He has enjoined upon you, so that you may beware.' Some scholars call these Ayahs the 10 Commandments of the Qur’an. The Surah concludes by reminding us about the Day of Judgement and warning us against false ideologies. Then Allah says that the odds are in our favor, and it is like He is asking us how we could possibly fail. مَنۡ جَآءَ بِالۡحَسَنَةِ فَلَهٗ عَشۡرُ اَمۡثَالِهَا​ ۚ وَمَنۡ جَآءَ بِالسَّيِّئَةِ فَلَا يُجۡزٰٓى اِلَّا مِثۡلَهَا وَهُمۡ لَا يُظۡلَمُوۡنَ‏ (6:160) Whoever will come to Allah with a good deed shall have ten times as much, and whoever will come to Allah with an evil deed, shall be requited with no more than the like of it. They shall not be wronged. Then the Prophet(SAW) is being told to tell a number of things. قُلۡ اِنَّنِىۡ هَدٰٮنِىۡ رَبِّىۡۤ اِلٰى صِرَاطٍ مُّسۡتَقِيۡمٍۚ دِيۡنًا قِيَمًا مِّلَّةَ اِبۡرٰهِيۡمَ حَنِيۡفًا​ ۚ وَمَا كَانَ مِنَ الۡمُشۡرِكِيۡنَ‏ (6:161) Say: 'As for me, my Lord has guided me on to a straight way, a right religion, the way of Abraham who adopted it in exclusive devotion to Allah, and he was not of those who associated others with Allah in His divinity.' قُلۡ اِنَّ صَلَاتِىۡ وَنُسُكِىۡ وَ مَحۡيَاىَ وَمَمَاتِىۡ لِلّٰهِ رَبِّ الۡعٰلَمِيۡنَۙ‏  (6:162) Say: 'Surely my Prayer, all my acts of worship, and my living and my dying are for Allah alone, the Lord of the whole universe. لَا شَرِيۡكَ لَهٗ​ۚ وَبِذٰلِكَ اُمِرۡتُ وَاَنَا اَوَّلُ الۡمُسۡلِمِيۡنَ (6:163) He has no associate. Thus have I been bidden, and I am the foremost of those who submit themselves (to Allah).` قُلۡ اَغَيۡرَ اللّٰهِ اَبۡغِىۡ رَبًّا وَّهُوَ رَبُّ كُلِّ شَىۡءٍ​ ؕ وَلَا تَكۡسِبُ كُلُّ نَـفۡسٍ اِلَّا عَلَيۡهَا​ۚ وَلَا تَزِرُ وَازِرَةٌ وِّزۡرَ اُخۡرٰى​ ۚ ثُمَّ اِلٰى رَبِّكُمۡ مَّرۡجِعُكُمۡ فَيُنَبِّئُكُمۡ بِمَا كُنۡـتُمۡ فِيۡهِ تَخۡتَلِفُوۡنَ‏ (6:164) Say: 'Shall I seek someone other than Allah as Lord when He is the Lord of everything?' Everyone will bear the consequence of what he does, and no one shall bear the burden of another. Thereafter, your return will be to your Lord, whereupon He will let you know what you disagreed about. Everyone of us is accountable only for what we have done. وَهُوَ الَّذِىۡ جَعَلَـكُمۡ خَلٰٓـئِفَ الۡاَرۡضِ وَرَفَعَ بَعۡضَكُمۡ فَوۡقَ بَعۡضٍ دَرَجٰتٍ لِّيَبۡلُوَكُمۡ فِىۡ مَاۤ اٰتٰٮكُمۡ​ؕ اِنَّ رَبَّكَ سَرِيۡعُ الۡعِقَابِ  ۖ وَاِنَّهٗ لَـغَفُوۡرٌ رَّحِيۡمٌ‏ (6:165) For He it is Who has appointed you vicegerent over the earth, and has exalted some of you over others in rank that He may try you in what He has bestowed is upon you. Indeed your Lord is swift in retribution, and He is certainly AllForgiving, All-Compassionate. Now it is our turn. Everyone of us can only live once in this world. Allah has given each one of us something that the other doesn’t have. Even the richest person in the world will still need another person to do something else because that person will be better than the richest person in that particular thing. Acw yes brother Sheekh Yasir 18 prophets are mentioned in Surah Anam but 25 Prophets are mentioned in Qur'an generally. Jazakalah for your efforts in Dahwah of Allah

The personal note ends... Contents of Surah Al-An'ām - The Day of Judgement: This is also a very important motif in this Surah, there are a lot of Ayahs - 1. Ayah 12 - Allah will gather us on the Day of Judgement. 2. Ayah 31 - Everything they have done will go to waste. They will reprimand themselves on the Day of Judgement. 3. Ayah 94 - We will all go to Allah one by one. وَلَقَدۡ جِئۡتُمُوۡنَا فُرَادٰى كَمَا خَلَقۡنٰكُمۡ اَوَّلَ مَرَّةٍ وَّتَرَكۡتُمۡ مَّا خَوَّلۡنٰكُمۡ وَرَآءَ ظُهُوۡرِكُمۡ وَمَا نَرٰى مَعَكُمۡ شُفَعَآءَكُمُ الَّذِيۡنَ زَعَمۡتُمۡ اَنَّهُمۡ فِيۡكُمۡ شُرَكٰٓؤُا​ ؕ لَقَدْ تَّقَطَّعَ بَيۡنَكُمۡ وَضَلَّ عَنۡكُمۡ مَّا كُنۡتُمۡ تَزۡعُمُوۡنَ (6:94) (And Allah will say): 'Now you have come to Us all alone even as We had created you in the first instance, and you have left behind all that We had bestowed upon you in the world. We do not see with you your intercessors whom you imagined to have a share with Allah in your affairs. You have now been cut off from one another and all those whom you imagined (to be Allah's associates in your affairs) have failed you.' The Hadith says - “Naked, barefoot, and uncircumcised” - we will stand before Allah. 4. Ayah 130 - Allah asks the Jinns and humans on the Day of Judgement about the Prophets He sent. يٰمَعۡشَرَ الۡجِنِّ وَالۡاِنۡسِ اَلَمۡ يَاۡتِكُمۡ رُسُلٌ مِّنۡكُمۡ يَقُصُّوۡنَ عَلَيۡكُمۡ اٰيٰتِىۡ وَيُنۡذِرُوۡنَكُمۡ لِقَآءَ يَوۡمِكُمۡ هٰذَا​ ؕ قَالُوۡا شَهِدۡنَا عَلٰٓى اَنۡفُسِنَا​ وَغَرَّتۡهُمُ الۡحَيٰوةُ الدُّنۡيَا وَشَهِدُوۡا عَلٰٓى اَنۡفُسِهِمۡ اَنَّهُمۡ كَانُوۡا كٰفِرِيۡنَ‏ (6:130) (Then Allah will also ask them): 'O assembly of jinn and men! Did there not come to you Messengers from among yourselves, relating to you My signs, and warning you of the encounter of this your Day (of Judgement)?' They will say: 'Yes, we bear witness against ourselves.' They have been deluded by the life of this world, and they will bear witness against themselves that they had disbelieved. Death is a reality that no one talks about, it is an awkward conversation. In the meantime, we enjoy this world but a wise person understands that this world will not last long and he will think about the next world. Allah reminds us of this in Surah Al-An'ām. Contents of Surah Al-An'ām - The Story of Ibrahim(AS) arguing with people about the Oneness of Allah: This is the famous story of Ibrahim(AS) seeing the star, then the moon, and after that, the sun. Finally, he(AS) rejects all of these and says that he(AS) will only worship the creator of all of these things. He(AS) says - اِنِّىۡ وَجَّهۡتُ وَجۡهِىَ لِلَّذِىۡ فَطَرَ السَّمٰوٰتِ وَالۡاَرۡضَ حَنِيۡفًا​ وَّمَاۤ اَنَا مِنَ الۡمُشۡرِكِيۡنَ​ۚ‏ (6:79) Behold, I have turned my face in exclusive devotion to the One Who originated the heavens and the earth, and I am certainly not one of those who associate others with Allah in His divinity.' This story is not Ibrahim(AS) searching for Allah. He(AS) knew Allah was the Creator and disagreed with idolatry even as a young child. This entire conversation is a debate, he(AS) uses this language to argue the truth with people around him(AS). From Ayah 81 onwards, there is a long list of Prophets mentioned - 18 Prophets. There is no other section that has as many Prophet names as this section, one other section comes close and it is in another Surah. One Prophet is mentioned here that is only mentioned twice in the Qur’an, without any details and just in a list. Allah says here, that He chose these Prophets and He chose more Prophets from their progeny. Contents of Surah Al-An'ām - The Concept of Knowing the Reason why the Ayah was Revealed (أَسْبَاب النُّزُوْل): There is a Chapter in the Science of Interpreting the Qur’an called the Science of Knowing the Reason why the Ayah was Revealed (أَسْبَاب النُّزُوْل). This is a Branch of Knowledge that is essential to fully understand the Qur’an. If you don’t have this knowledge, your understanding of the Qur’an will be partial and, in some cases, maybe even misunderstanding. Ayah 52 of this Surah is a classic example of this. If you did not the knowledge of why this Ayah was revealed, you wouldn’t understand at all (or very vaguely) what this Ayah means. وَلَا تَطۡرُدِ الَّذِيۡنَ يَدۡعُوۡنَ رَبَّهُمۡ بِالۡغَدٰوةِ وَالۡعَشِىِّ يُرِيۡدُوۡنَ وَجۡهَهٗ​ ؕ مَا عَلَيۡكَ مِنۡ حِسَابِهِمۡ مِّنۡ شَىۡءٍ وَّمَا مِنۡ حِسَابِكَ عَلَيۡهِمۡ مِّنۡ شَىۡءٍ فَتَطۡرُدَهُمۡ فَتَكُوۡنَ مِنَ الظّٰلِمِيۡنَ‏ (6: 52) And do not drive away those who invoke their Lord in the morning and the evening, seeking His pleasure all the time. You are by no means accountable for them just as they are by no means accountable for you. If you still drive them away, you will become among the wrong-doers. The story behind this Ayah is mentioned in Ibn Ishaq and many Tafseer and Hadith books. It goes as follows - A group of senior delegations (some of the most famous prestigious members) of Quraysh came to the uncle of the Prophet(SAW). They said that they don’t have a major problem with what the Prophet(SAW) is saying and they will seriously consider converting to Islam but there is one issue that the Prophet(SAW) should compromise upon. If he(SAW) compromises on this issue, they would be willing to become Muslims. Abu Talib was very happy and enquired what this issue is. So they said that the Prophet(SAW) associated with the low-class in the same gatherings as our elites. He(SAW) sits with the non-Arabs on the same gathering as with the Arabs and he(SAW) associates with the African slaves [like Bilaal(RA)]. If Abu Talib tells the Prophet(SAW) that when the elites come to the gathering, he(SAW) should get rid of the low class and they should have their elite class only, then this group of people might be willing to accept Islam. Abu Talib was ecstatic and he rushed to the Prophet(SAW) with this proposition and encouraged him(SAW) to accept it. The Prophet(SAW) spoke to some of the Sahaba and they were open to accepting this idea too. And then, Allah revealed Ayah 52. This changes our paradigm in so many ways. We are told through this Ayah not to compromise on principles. This shows us that Islam is true religion preached by a true Prophet(SAW). We need quality, not quantity. We need sincerity and knowledge. When this Ayah came down, the Prophet(SAW) refused the proposition and he(SAW) sat with Bilaal(RA) and used to walk down the steps with him. He(SAW) said, “My Lord has commanded me to be with you.” This ends Section-3. Section-1, Section-2, Section-4, and Section-5 will be posted in different comments.
