The most interesting part is where the parallels between The creation stories of not only Christianity but also Greek mythology with Adam and Eve parallels and Ymir and Kronos parallels.
@ДмитроДорофеєв
@ДмитроДорофеєв 3 жыл бұрын
Another interesting fact is that Slavic mythology borrows a lot of elements from Norse, which is a result of historic interactions between the Slavic princes and viking bounty hunters ( or as they were called "varjags"). I mean the head god of the pantheon is literally just Thor with a different name( but he doesn't have as much cool myths about him as the original).
@greentiger332
@greentiger332 3 жыл бұрын
There are parallels because the only written sources for Norse Mythology were recorded after Christianity took over in the region. Because of that, scholars have a hell of a time trying to separate the actual Norse Mythology from the ones Christian influenced Mythology, since, unlike Greek Mythology, there were no records of a pre-Christian version of that religion.

The biggest problem isn't just that Christianity had taken root in the area, but that the scribe Snorri was in fact a monk. So his version being very likely contorted to be acceptable to the Christian Authorities is unfortunate. However, we are lucky these stories made it to us at all.

@@angel6017 after a war with the vanir the Æsir decided to build fortifications around Asgard and hired a disguised jötun to build them. The jötun wanted to be paid with the sun, moon, and Freyya's hand in marriage if he could do it by autumn. The jötun couldn't do it himself so Loki asked the Æsir to allow him to use his horse for help. As autumn drew near the jötun was almost finished. The Æsir browbeat Loki to stop it so he shape shifts into a mare in heat to distract the horse named Svadilfori long enough so the fortifications couldn't be finished in time. Loki gets knocked up with Sleipnir and Thor kills the jötun. Several months later Loki gifts Odin Sleipnir.

Neil Gaimen literally has a book "Norse Mythology" which could be a handy modern source. Also at some point in the next decade (I know there's a lot of other series in process) could you do Celtic/Gaelic Mythology. Good luck with those names. It could be a good option for next Halloween since it originated from the Pagan festival Samhain.

My favorite part is when humans were made & had some very different points compared to Jewish/Christian creation stories & other creation stories I've heard. 1. Most other stories have humans made or born from some creation process of elements, but the Norse say we were carved from trees, which means we came from another kind of lifeform already in existence. That's actually closer to the scientific truth than other myths I've heard. (Of course I haven't studied them all.) 2. They were both made at the same time. No crap about the 1st woman being made out of the 1st man, making him the more important & in charge. 3. The gods had names for things in existence already. "Adam" doesn't get credit for naming it all. 👏👏👏

Interestingly, there's a flood and arc ( actually one of the gods in animal form) myth in the Indian Hindu mythology as well. It might possibly pre-date Christianity (not sure) so that would imply that nearly all cultures have a flood and gigantic ship saving some species from extinction myth

That "Christianity" that did all that stuff were the same group that crucified Jesus so don't think that was true Christianity. In fact many true Christians were burned at the stake among other thing because they disagreed with the Roman Catholic church about what Jesus was teaching. Read up on Martin Luther, he's a prime example of this.

If you'd ever consider expanding to include Fennoscandia and Finland, Kalevala would be something I'd be so interested to see you talking about! During our romantic period and nationalistic identity building era under Russia's ruling Elias Lönnrot gathered old folk poetry and tales and constructed our national epic, the forementioned Kalevala. It's one of the rare full national epics, but way less talked about abroad than the other European epics. It still has a great importance in our culture and identity, and the collection process and Lönnrot's life mission has had a huge impact to what we know about the lifestyle, beliefs and ideology of our ancestors. Even though Swedish was our main political language for hundrets of year due to past Swedish ruling, the poems increased the value of Finnish language and it's national importance, which with other factor later resulted in Finnish becoming an accepted political language and the main language used in public situations. I'd be happy to help with pronunciation, some historical perspectives and especially the side of the study of religion and theology.

Minor correction, the plural for Jotunn is Jotnar, and they are not called Giants, frost or notherwise. The Jotnar were basically another group of gods that were just associated with chaos and natural disasters. Also, the "Frost Giants" from Marvel got nothing to do with the Jotnar. They are Marvel's own creation and should never be confused with the beings in Norse Myth.
