Got a wild theory. The world serpent isn't a snake. It's the Milky Way band of the galaxy, which back in those times would have been easily visible at night. It does appear to wrap around the world. It is out in the sky, not the ocean, and they would not have known what it was, and assumed star groups were animals since ancient times. Why not a world serpent?

That's my biggest fear because you're no longer yourself. My paternal grandfather lived to be 96, but he was gone long before then due to Alzheimer's disease and dementia. To me, it seems like I would just be a burden on my family, and I would no longer have my perception, memory, and will. They're working on treatments for Alzheimer's, but I'm pretty sure I already have CTE from football.

My mom told me to old yeller her when her mind starts to go too far. ‘When I can’t wipe my own ass or I’m scared all the time’ are her words. She’s gonna get a little pill stash, to put in a milkshake and go in her sleep. I hope my kids would do the same if/when I ask. It’s giving a person the option to die with dignity, as opposed to a slow painful death.

I think it was good to show Thor he wasn't all that. Those with egos need to be humbled sometimes. The same goes with Loki, the cocky little trickster who got tricked. The third person, the young man, did an excellent job for a human. But wasn't his sister with them?

Thank you for covering this - this is my favourite story out of all the Norse myths, I really hope at some point in the future we get to see Chris and Tom in a version of it - it would be amazing! Also I played out my own version of it once with toys and my big Chocolate Labrador, Harley played Skrymir. He was actually okay with all the toys going around him and even with Thor being on his head. It made me think he would've made a great actor dog!

That is exactly the series I was looking for a bit ago. I mentioned a modern book that had covered this tale, in a different way, a week or two ago. The Norse opinion on guile and trickery is interesting, as this story shows, being beat by trickery to them is on par or worse than being beat honestly, and is telling about the culture I think.

This is one of my favorite stories. Thor may have felt embarrassed, but those giants were intimidated. He was expected to lose, but he made significantly more progress than anyone else could even imagine. I am personally most impressed by Thealfi...whose name I can never remember how to spell. He was just a human, probably a teen, and he nearly ran as fast as thought. Of course there was no way he would have a better chance in two out of three foot races. He'd have to grow tired a lot sooner than a thought would. But that first time was close enough that they were willing to let him try twice more. That's amazing. He had to have been the fastest human ever. This is also one of my favorite Loki myths. He's not evil, scheming, cowardly, or even insulting. He's just proud and hungry...and a bit irritable. It feels like one of the stories that might show his actual personality rather than the one in other stories that seem like they are trying to make him the bad guy.

@ladykoiwolfe

@@IronHenry616 yes and no. In some stories he's a clear villain, in some he's a mischief maker who inadvertently causes good outcomes, and in a rare few he's just a companion who's still undeniably Loki. This is one of the stories when he doesn't do anything harmful. The one where Mjolnir is stolen is another where he's actually helpful. Loki is very complicated.

On my way home, I watched OSP's video on the subject (again). Then put this on and was like "Wait, this is familiar. Is this...?" But your retelling was just different enough that it took to the mention of Skrymir or me to be like "Yea, this is it" Oh, and no. Thor was not tricked. He was victim to his pride and hubris.

Take Loki of the outlands for one, he was the trickster of the outermost parts of his realm, or Logi who supposedly had one letter off of Loki's name to show that he is also a trick, but one of aggressive and firey nature

There are also others stories on the day the hammer was stolen,Thor dressed as a bride and there is also the precarious story of Thor against the serpent of the world and the trap of the giants and of course several adventures With Thor and Loki together like in God Ragnarok and there could be 3 more of the 2 together under the walls of Asgard there in the village of mortals and in hellhaim and midgard of the 2 together But it's a shame that there weren't more missions of Atreus and Thor together,I really liked their friendship And they could have done a little more extended for us to see them in these Kingdoms and in asgard down in the village Even so it was amazing 🤔😌👍like and bye!

To anyone with any interest in Norse mythology who stumbles upon this comment, I can highly recommend the Danish graphic novel series Valhalla by Peter Madsen (illustrator and writer, not murderous criminal) - these were the absolute shit when I was younger and I just found out there are 'pirate translated' english versions online! There's also a cartoon film based on this telling ^ (basically from Thor + Loke picking up Tjalfe + Røskva to everything going down at Udgårds Lokes 'court' or whatever and then I think it takes some creative turns), but it's so cute, 10/10 my favourite movie (+soundtrack) ever
