The Snow Queen was never evil. She is just the winter snow. She kills people by freezing them to death, but thta is because she is a natural force. She is no more evil then a tree or a cliff. The trolls were evil in the original story.

how is she not evil when she basically kidnapped a little boy putting glass shards in his eyes and heart and also basically tricking him into following his sled so she can kidnap him and bring him back to her ice castle?...... Or the fact that she basically entrapped him at the ice castle and made him sit there and basically freeze to death playing some stupid game that is basically some reward system she thought he would never figure out? I do not see how none of that is considered evil-doing?

the original is a powerful story. It's interesting in that it's a reverse damsel in distress. Instead of the guy saving the girl, the girl saves the guy. Now pay attention too to the symbolism. Something happens to corrupt the boy and turn him hostile. He ends up alone.. in an icy prison lost in the pursuit of reason and logic.. no connection. to anyone really. However though the girl's efforts she is able to pull him back.. this time instead of childhood friends.. lovers as the formation of the pair bond breaks the spell. Now examine the world around you and see how this sort of thing plays out.

10:11 so glad you made the connection too, I had the same thought. The image of the snow queen pulling the boy along in her sled gives me strong The Lion, Witch, and the Wardrobe vibes. Don't know why that image at 9:40 just reminds me so much of the queen in that movie having another boy sit in her sled and use her coat to keep warm. (Been a while since I've seen The Lion, Witch, and the Wardrobe, I just remember the scene vaguely). Can't say if that is any kind of nod to this story, but it's certainly interesting.

The witch did have a magic garden and wanted to keep Gerda so maybe that’s the same witch. I am writing a book with different fairy tale characters. I may do that. The events of the Snow Queen already happened so I don’t know how to show the audience. Although in my story this witch knows the Snow Queen. Here the Snow Queen is also the evil queen from Snow White and the mirror the devil created is the same magic mirror the evil queen talks to.

It's a beautiful story, and it sadly says a lot about the current Disney staff that they threw 99% out claiming that it "wouldn't make good cinema" or something. And yes, it's better than Frozen. Though I don't consider that a particularly high hurdle (Frozen 2 made it much more palatable but it's still in my opinion the very definition of "overrated"). Regardless it is a beautiful work.

One of these shards get into Mamaru's eye making him dispise Usagi and fall for the Queen instead. Usagi goes through an ice filled and dream world to face the Queen in a final battle to save Mamaru. She is evil, just not as evil as a lot of other villains in fairytales. She is a good example of a psychopath in that she is completely apathetic. She kidnaps Kai, but allows him to escape with Gerda when she comes to rescue him. The Snow Queen is a part of the fair folk/fae and unlike Disney depictions, the fae are actually sociopathic in nature.

I've read somewhere the witch with the flower garden represented the Spring (and therefore she wanted to keep Gerda for herself, because she was in spring of her years) the princess and the prince represented Summer (as they were about to mary and begin the summer of their lives) and the old bandit gran represented the Autumn ( when everything and everyone is prepairing for a winter, trying to get most from the land while they still can). And the snow queen is the Winter of course.

Some nights she wants me to read to her, especially if I've bought her a new book. But some nights I'll ask, "What story do you want uncle to read you tonight?" & she'll say, "Solo. Solo. Solo" lmbo. She's 3 but she's brilliant & understands a great deal. My girlfriend & her son likes watching your videos as well. Frozen was so hyped up. When I saw it I didn't get it: the film didn't live up to the hype. The fact this story has been on Disney's To Do List since 1940s didn't help either; they had decades to get this right yet it didn't measure up. Or at least in my opinion.

@@bloodywanker49 Yeah, that was another thing that bugged me about it as well. Like I said, it was a fine movie and all, but people kept saying it was like, the first Disney movie to do this and that, when there have been other past Disney movies that did it first. Like the sister love over the boyfriend/girlfriend love. Or how people liked how Anna woke up with a true "bed head" when Mulan and Tiana did too. Or how it was the first Disney movie to show "a girl doesn't need a man to save her", when again, plenty of other Disney movies have already done that.

I remember, any time I came across this story growing up, I always felt just a little bit sorry for that witch that wasn't evil, and who wanted a daughter. Yeah keeping Gerda and removing her memory is not how you should do these things, but she was not a bad woman; she wanted a child to love. Quite different from the Snow Queen. The version I saw on tape had the Snow Queen own that mirror, who always told her it loved her, until one day she accused it of lying and hurled it to the floor (it was a hand mirror). Those were the shards that blew all over the world. I had some idea that the Snow Queen didn't know what love truly was, yet felt some sort of longing for another she couldn't explain to herself. Obviously a magic mirror just made her realize what it wasn't. Kidnapping Kai and those shards embedded in his eyes and heart was her way of bringing a person she wanted to her world. You are not supposed to do this any more than the witch did. But with a Snow Queen who does not know what love is, he became more a favored palace object.

Otakulover Forever she took him because she was trying to reconstruct the mirror and Kai has two of the shards to complete the mirror. If you read the book there’s also some evidence that she grew a little attached to the boy, and probably wanted to keep him like the witch wanted to do with Gurda. Why she was trying to reconstruct the mirror is beyond me, maybe she wanted it for herself. But that was her motivation for taking Kai.

Kai's granny told of the mirror and that the Snow Queen kidnaps kids out after dark. Kai went sledding in hopes of finding bliss. The second witch kissed Gerda to make her forget all her past, and was the Snow Queen's sister. Before Gerda arrived at the castle, Kai asked to go home. So his captor gave him icy blocks to spell "eternity" first. But there weren't enough blocks. After Kai was cured, something broke the blocks so they could spell lots of words.

There's actually a Russian animation about the snow Queen. In this one Kai and Gerda are siblings (sorry if I'm spelling it wrongly) but there are characters like the witch and her magic garden ,the royals ,the old woman and the robber girl.

The snow queen was one of my favorite stories as a little girl (probably why I loved frozen) I loved it so much that I wanted to name my son Kai( my husband disagreed and so we didn’t). Anyway, even the version you talked about was a bit different than the one I heard

Sailor Moon touches on "The Snow Queen" with evil Queen Nehellenia. In that arc a broken mirror falls from space, gets in people's eyes and changes their personalities. The queen even captures and brainwashes a young prince with those shards. It's cute and not very many episodes considering they made 200 total in the series. I love Japanese stories and find it interesting when multiple cultures interpret the same classic fairy tale. Sailor Moon borrows from many tales and legends, one of the reasons I was drawn to it as a kid.

Not only that, but Sailor Moon also featured an actual Snow Queen as an enemy in Sailor Moon S The Movie: Hearts In Ice, which was also partially based on The Bamboo Cutter. The evil meteor breaking into pieces and the evil Snow Queen-called Snow Queen Kaguya because she reminded people of Princess Kaguya before her evil nature was revealed-seeking to gather the pieces and reassemble it so she could use it to freeze the Earth also resembles the story of the evil mirror.

I have a collection of Hans Christian Anderson stories I actually read the snow queen and I loved it!

While you were telling the story I actually realized that I had heard this story multiple times while growing up. I'm German and I used to have a set of Hans Christian Anderson's Stories as audiobooks and I think there was even a movie of this specific story. I kept vividly remembering what the environment looked like in the movie. Another thing I realized while writing this, is that they used to show his movie on a certain channel around Christmas time but I think they stopped showing them maybe 10 years ago. There is absolutely no exact reason as to why I'm writing this. I just thought it was really weird and interesting that I used to watch and love these kinda terrifying stories and remembered all of this by watching a random KZbin video at 1:40am lol Thanks I guess haha

I actually think *the original story* and art *of Frozen is so beautiful* and imaginative 💖 -- *far more so than the Disney* movie counterpart. I hope that one day someone will *try a more direct rendition* of the books. ✨😳
