Children's stories from way back when were a lot grittier than we are now because kids were a lot less innocent. Think about it: kids saw executions as public entertainment, saw severed heads on spikes along the sides of bridges, overheard their parents having sex (people often lived in one room houses and the entire family slept in the same bed), saw animals and people giving birth, and were surrounded by death all the time. Kids were a lot less sheltered then. No wonder kids stories from the days of yore are so messed up

@vitaminanime6 жыл бұрын
@@MelB868 be glad you don't live back then in that case and didn't have kids back then...kids witnessing executions and births and deaths was a part of life back then. People and animals giving birth, public executions, corpses of condemned criminals in gibbeting cages, dumping pails of piss into the streets, people dead from diseases that are easily treatable today...they were facts of life. Maybe comes across as evil by today's standards and is definitely unfortunate but back then it merely was a harsh reality and there was't a whole lot they could do about it. Relativism.

@vitaminanime6 жыл бұрын
@@MelB868 it's not like kids were forced to watch their parents doing it or that their parents made a spectacle of it, and i'm sure adults would try to find time alone but there wasn't much concept of privacy. When you have a family of twelve and a cow living under one small roof there will not be much privacy. As it was, seeing executions was like going to the movies and bodies of condemned criminals was a warning and there was't a whole lot anyone could do about it. It was a cultural norm and a social norm. Not saying any of this was good but that was just a way of life and people didn't know any different.(and what does witchcraft have to do with any of this as witchcraft was very much frowned upon)

About "Suitable for children" I remembered a very popular song that I sang when I was a girl, called "Alicia va en el coche", and it's about a girl who is going to meet her parents in a car, her aunt fixes her hair with a crystal comb, and she has gold ornaments and glass orchids. The song ends by saying that Alicia was dead ... And she was being prepared to be taken to the cemetery and "meet her parents." And I used to sing it since I was 4 years old, and I just realized the meaning when I was 16 years old (even tho it clearly says "Alice is dead, they are going to bury her") . But unconsciously it prepared you for not to think of death as something sad.

The version I was something of a hybrid of the old versions and the new. The protagonist was a young blonde child, named Goldylocks, the bears were a family, named Father-Bear, Mother-Bear, and Young-Bear, and the tale was all from her point of view. She was always described as a rather unpleasant child, 'a little brat' was the phrase my father would use, and the story started with her watching the bears house, hidden from them by thick foliage, she entered the house as soon as they left. In the version I heard, the porridge bit and the chairs bit was always lumped together - with the chairs being set around the table -, Young-Bear's chair would collapse as soon as Goldilocks had finished the porridge. Plus, Goldylocks' complaints about the porridge were; Father-Bear's is too salty, and Mother-Bear's was too sweet, with Young-Bear's being 'just right' because it was a perfect balance between sweet and salty. Further, this whole section was extended as Goldylocks decided that, if she mixed Mother-Bear's and Father-Bear's porridge together, the resulting mix would be just like Young-Bear's, this worked and she ate the two other helpings - after which the chair broke, which was explained by Goldylocks' becoming to heavy for it after eating so much. Goldylocks would then go upstairs, in-order to sleep off her large meal, she would go through the 'too hard... too soft... just right' rigmarole with the beds and fall asleep in Young-Bear's bed. The bears would then return, and finds that they had been robbed, this would get them very angry. They would search for the intruder, Young-Bear crying for a bit after discovering that his chair had been broken, and, of course, find her in the bedroom. The bears, all of them having had their breakfasts stolen, would kill and eat Goldylocks - without waking her - cutting some of her flesh into strips and frying it for bacon - a meal which they found satisfying. They would also sell Goldylocks' clothes, and remaining meat, at the market; in order to pay for a new chair for Young-Bear. It seems the version I heard was a hybrid including some of the traits of the more modern version, the darkness of the older version, and a certain degree of creative license. I needn't add that this was my favourite story while growing up.

Not a request for a video or anything, but since story evolution is clearly a passion for you, you might really like the series if you haven't tried them. Goldilocks is portrayed as a trespasser (um, yea), and steps in dog doo before wandering thru their house. It's actually pretty good! Dahl is the guy behind "Charlie & the Choc. Factory" & wrote oodles of stories for "Tales of the Unexpected," & a fan of other stories filmed for the show that AREN'T for kids (or many adults!). My favorite is the version with the Fox as protagonist. It fits well with the Bears as antagonists, it explains how she survived being thrown out of a window, and I just like Fox's.

You are an excellent tallented presenter. Twenty years ago I would have suggested that a TV Network should hire you but thanks to IT you can enjoy compiling a very interesting series and broadcasting it yourself. Carry on I really enjoy your channel. I find your series so interesting that it satisfies the geek in me. Often I research characters and aspects of your suggestions. Being a History and Archaeology Nutcase slots perfectly in with the thought process of your series. Carry on. Well done.

Have you ever read The Land of Stories? I love how Chris Colfer twists and combines all the fairytales, but I particularly like what he does with Goldilocks.

I remember a version of the tale where the bears spare her , tell her she can come back visit them whenever she wants but that she never again gets in the home by herself again. But maybe that's just a personal reinterpretation of the author of the book i read.

What about the version where the baby bear comes home alone and discovers Goldilocks and wants to give her a kiss, which she refuses, then Mama and Papa Bear come home and gets the wrong idea and forces Goldilocks to marry the Baby bear with a shotgun because they're good Christians. How about the story behind "Hansel and Gretel"?

Monroville-I suppose that if bears can own houses, sit in chairs, lay in beds and eat porridge from a bowl, they can operate shotguns. Just don't remind them that the South lost the war...

My favorite version is the one my mom sang to me every night before putting me to sleep because it was her own version she had made with her best friend in girl scout camp. I still remember it word for word. Now that I think of it, I should write it down since she lost the original and probably doesn't remember it.

After you mentioned it was originally a horror story, I realized that it's a home invasion story and you're supposed to sympathize with the bears.

As a kid I was only allowed to read the dark or the justification version Like Goldie locks: she had to fix the chair and make a new bowl of portage or the grim one basically the bears eating her Three pigs: them getting eaten or 2 get eaten and the one that worked the hardest would’ve survived I grew up with a very different childhood

There was a Monkees episode (goggle the Monkees if you don’t know what I’m taliking about) that did a spoof of fairytales. Goldilocks (Micky Dolenz) Runs screaming, “Help me! Oh Help me woodsman! The two bears are chasing me!” The woodsman (Davy Jones) asks, “Two bears? I thought there were three bears?” To which Goldilocks responds, “Yeah, well Papa Bear kinda wanted me to stiick around.”
