Artech Storm Yes, but they didn't bring 'Top of the morning' with them. That expression is unknown and never used in Ireland ... except by Irish American visitors who step off the plane with a big cheery grin and use it to greet mystified locals. Over the last few years some frustrated Irish people tried to track down where it came from once and for all. It seems to be a milking term used by dairymen making deliveries to the big houses in England. The best milk comes from the morning milking session and best of the morning milk is the creamy top layer. Hence the expression 'Top of the morning to you'. How it made its way to the U.S. and lodged itself in the Irish American community is still a mystery to be solved.

When I was younger my friends grandmother would call me a changeling (I was the only black kid around) and she would have us running to the end of probably 20 different rainbows. We would ride our bikes in the Desert. And she would drive us across town chasing bows. Only one time we found the end of the rainbow as we approached this hill we saw a strange little man. When we reached the end it went into a deep dark hole. No one wanted to climb down the hole. Nevada has a lot of mines. You could hear a little voice in the hole when grandmother arrived yelling at whatevers in the hole. It seems to reply to her yelling. His jacket was brown from a distance. She ran with us. Oh my misspent youth!

One time at school it was Saint Patrick day and usually they'd pass out little cartons of milk. The blue was regular, pink was strawberry and brown was chocolate but that day they handed out a green carton and the milk was green. I remember I sat down and they hired a small person to be a leprechaun passing out chocolate coins. I joked about wanting his pot of gold and I just remember how angry he looked his face all wrinkled and hatred in his eyes. years later I was talking with my twin about how cute it is when elementaries do something special for kids and I asked he remembered the special green milk carton we had the small man and my twin said he doesn't remember it at all. Now I question if it was real. Lol

When I looked at Celtic mythology their was a theory the word leprecon was a miss translation of Lugh Lamfada (of the long hand) a great warrier of the Tuatha De Danaan, the he became known as Lughchromain (stopping Lugh) when their power waned which was anglicised into what we have today.

leah o sullivan there’s also a holiday called Lughnasadh (alternatively Lammas Lúnasa/Lùnastal) which namesake comes from the god Lugh. It is an early harvest festival in summer that also honors Lugh for some people who celebrate. It’s typically celebrated in the beginning of August either the first of the month, the first Sunday, or depending on where the moon cycle is which can be different depending on tradition. People traditionally make corn husk dolls or my personal favorite activity which is the ritual baking of bread. It was thought to be bad luck to harvest wheat before the festival honoring Lugh which is where the bread/wheat focused aspects are thought to come from. And the dolls and other crafts were meant to know Lugh who was a craftsman god.

“Yeats” is pronounced “Yates.” It’s a common mistake, but as a huge fan of Yeats’s poetry, it hit my ears like a sour note. I’ve tried to study Irish folklore more than once, and I always found it rather strange and difficult to follow. I think it had something to do with their storytelling. I used to live in a tourist town (where It's a Wonderful Life bridge scene was filmed) directly across from the famous Bridge where the lead actor contemplates suicide. All year round, but especially around Christmas, I would get asked all the time if that is the bridge, or any other silly question about Seneca Falls, which is also the birthplace of Woman's rights. Yet I still just answered questions, respectfully and waited to poke fun at the tourists until I was with friends.

That last story may have just given us the the beginning of the Dulahan curse. I think there's a connection. The man had been infected by a prior curse which put his mouth on the back of his head for seven years. He then cuts a woman in half (the soon to be banshee), then when he goes back to get his mouth righted, he succeeded. But was beheaded in the process. Anyone killed by him or anyone of his bloodline that died a horrible death, becomes a Dulahan. But only one Dulahan is proceeded by the Banshee. The old beheaded king himself. Now cursed to transfer the dead in his carriage, pulled by two headless horses.

Please can you do more stuff on Celtic Mythology? Also there is even more about leprechauns out there so keep researching! :D

I'm so glad you got some art! It worried me that you might not get a lot because of the deadline. But some Solo fans really pulled through with some good art for you to use 😊 seems impressive to me considering they probably only had roughly 2 days or less to draw them (I think... I saw the announcement on Wednesday so I assume that's the day the post asking for artist's help was uploaded). Some even had coloring! So I'm just amazed that there are awesome fans out there for you!

Okay, the whole "hating school" thing is new to me, and I don't recall encountering it at the Leprechaun Museum in Dublin. Your list of leprechaun subspecies is interesting, and chock full of subgroups I've never heard of, I'm puzzled why you left out the scariest of them, the Fear Darrig. According to Fairy and Folk Tales of the Irish Peasantry, by way of Wikipedia, "the fear darrig is classified as a solitary fairy along with the leprechaun and the clurichaun, ...The far darrig in particular is described as one who "busies himself with practical joking, especially with gruesome joking. ...They are also said to have some connection to nightmares." They have a nasty streak to their natures and their idea of "joking" tends toward the violent.

I've heard a theory that the leprechaun is a localized version of the Dokkalfar (dark elves) from Norse mythology that was introduced to Ireland by the vikings which might explain why they seem rather distant from other creatures of Celtic myth Also, while I'm a novice myself, I believe Tuatha de Danann is supposed to be pronounced something like: Too-ha jee Danan.

Here in the Philippines we call all leprechauns, gnomes, elf, goblins, brownie, pixies, imps, and trolls as duende or "nuno sa punso". A "nuno sa punso" is an elf that sits on top of an ant hill and believed to be their home. It is a dwarf like element with an evil power that causes mischief to the one who peed or accidentally destroyed the ant hill. It is similar to Rumpelstiltskin. While fairies and sprites are called ada, engkantada, diwata, or nimpa like the goddess of nature Maria Makiling or Maryang Makiling.

It's interesting because as a kid there was this one st Patrick's day in 1st grade where our teachers would bring us to a lacrosse field above our school to look for leperchauns or gold or something. About 30 minutes later they brought us back to class after the teacher was all like "ms. Teacher just said she spotted a leperchaun in our classroom, let's go!" so we all rushed there and the room was literally destroyed. I'm still pretty impressed with how dedicated my teacher was in destroying her classroom just to make us believe in miniature Irishmen who love gold.
