@Fantasygirl20014 жыл бұрын
As a child whenever I had a visit from the tooth fairy (parents) I would ask my mom to keep it safe from me primarily because I had no real concept of the value of money because my math skills were not so much lacking as the they were nonexistent even to this day I don't really know the value of money I know when I have alot of it but the problem is knowing how much is needed to buy things I want or even need so I trusted my mom to take care of my money and keep me up to date with how much money was left after shopping or lunch trip but if became complicated when I had a tooth fall out around my birthday I had been saving up for a little cabbage patch kids doctor set and when I woke up that morning in stead of money the tooth fairy left the toy in its place which was pretty sweet and according to mom it I still had all the money I had been saving to get it for myself so I then decided to get a bank to try to teach myself how to save money on my own luckily as I said that whole thing happened on my birthday and I had recieved alot of birthday money from my family and that same day I bought a three slotted bank with three separate parts to hold money in for giving to God, for saving and for spending and growing up learned more about saving money

To put this in perspective, an average pizza in Switzerland costs between about 25-30 CHF (I know it's a bit of an odd measure, but one of the clearest examples of comparable commodity-wealth I could think of). So 7.20 CHF, being roughly a third to fourth of that would, considering Dutch prices, equate to about €3-4, or between $3.5-5. Still on the upper end, but certainly not as high as suggested in the video. Two other things to keep in mind is that the Swiss, on average, or probably one of the wealthiest nations in the world with the highest incomes, I'd wager to say, in Europe, and that Zürich-canton is, to my understanding, the wealthiest part of Switzerland...

When I was in primary school, my tooth fell out, and I tried to clean off in under a tap in the school bathrooms. Poor six-year-old me dropped the tooth down the drain, I was crying for most of the day because I didn't think that the Tooth Fairy would believe me about losing a tooth unless it was under my pillow that night. Those teachers that calmly explained to a crying child that the Tooth Fairy knew I wasn't a lair and would understand that it was an accident, deserved a lot more than baby teeth money. I still laugh about it to this day.

I think the “going rate for tooth fairies” should be included in the school newsletter. I gave my daughter $1 for a baby tooth- I thought it was pretty generous- my daughter was devastated because this “meant” the tooth fairy loved another kid in her class more. With her older brothers I went with the idea that it depends on whether there are any cavities in the tooth, (rotten teeth aren’t worth as much as healthy teeth). With my daughter looking so unloved and horrified, we had to do a “search” for the “other dollar the tooth fairy gave her which must have fallen off her bedside table”. I used to pride myself on honesty with my kids, but the tooth fairy issue had me stumped. 🤷♀️

My brother and I got like 4 or 5 gifts each time we lost a tooth because my mom has some weird childhood trauma attached to it. My grandfather was a very gentle man, but when his kids' teeth were even a little loose, he wanted to pull them out right away. So my mom has many memories of her dad chasing her around the backyard with the same pliers he worked with. It caused her to feel a lot of guilt when we would lose our teeth, even though she allowed them to just fall out the normal way. Sucked for her, but I sure as hell profited from it.

Loved this episode!!! Growing up in Nigeria, it was so interesting to hear you mention the different tooth fairy related traditions and superstitions across the globe. As I little girl, though we didn't have a tooth fairy to believe in, I grew up knowing about her by watching western tv shows but never really believed in her personally. Ironically, I had older brothers and uncles who would instead tease me and tell me all sorts of stories. These stories varied from how if my teeth were feeling loose and I didn't let them fall out, rats would visit me at night to take them out of my mouth, to how if I threw my baby teeth unto the roof of our house, the rats would leave me money the next morning. I obviously never got any type of payment for any of my lost teeth and I remember being skeptical of these stories even then but hey, who doesn't love the idea of free money right? (communists probably, but I digress). It was just so fascinating to hear that other countries all over the world have similar takes on the 'tooth fairy'. Also, you know how I said they told me the rats would go for any loose teeth in your mouth, they meant ANY teeth. Baby teeth or adult, no one was safe. Haha, guess that was their way of making sure I didn't let my dental hygiene go down the toilet. Sorry for the rant. Just felt like sharing ^_^'

My dad was in charge of teeth retrieval. My mom told us he was the tooth fairy and put a pink tutu and wings in his closet to mess with us. Dad was not a night owl so our payment could vary from $1 all the way up to a mistaken $50 that he let me "keep" but also "let" me pay for the snack portion of the groceries that day , sly shit.

I remember trying to catch out the tooth fairy. So I hid my tooth in its box in a little toy horse trailer on my bedside table, thinking she'd have to go looking for it and that'd be enough time for me to see her. Instead I caught my parents shout whispering at each other about how they couldn't find it. I cried myself to sleep afterwards.

Hi, Jon, I enjoy all your origin stories, is really a delight. By the way here in Mexico in the north we use the Tooth Fairy tradition also but in the center and south of the country they let the teeth to El Ratón Perez (The Perez Mouse) under the pillow, the same one that in other countries as in Spain or south America is known as The Little Mouse Perez, in France is La Petite Souris (the little mouse), in Italy is Topolino, Topino (llitle mouse) or Fatina (little fairy), in some places of Spain also is know as The Little Angel as well as The Little Rat. The most probable origin of the little mouse tradition and its connection with a fairy comes from an 18th century (circa 1690) French tale by Marie-Catherine le Jumelle de Barneville, the Baroness d'Aulnoy: La Bonne Petite Souris (The Good Little Mouse), in Spain was well known as The Little Mouse Perez even before1884, because in that year was used as a reference in a novel set in 1868.

Idk I always knew about the tooth fairy but we just never "did that" in our country. Though interestingly my mother specifically and no one else made up other versions of the tooth fairy except instead of teeth it was for stopping me from using diapers and pacifiers, cause I actually took a long time to stop using them. The funny thing with diapers specifically is that it wasn't that I would piss myself or whatever I knew how to control it, I just didn't want to use the toilet cause I was used to the diaper xD. There was a period where I would want to use the bathroom so I would ask my mum to give me a diaper... I was a weird little one (and still kinda am)

In my family we had a little tooth fairy pillow that had been passed down three generations before mine. It was a small canvas pillow embroidered with the image of a fairy that had a small lace pocket attached to the front to put our teeth in as well as a ribbon handle to hang it on our door because me and my siblings (and family in general) were really light sleepers and would catch our parents if they had come into our rooms. Whenever we lost a tooth we hung the pillow on our bedroom doors with our tooth in the pocket and in the morning instead of the tooth there would be money. As me and my siblings grew older we got more money and molars were worth more. It would start with a quarter per tooth and double for a molar but each tooth would increase by a quarter over the last one.
