Been living/working/traveling central Mexico for over 8 months now with no plans to return to the U.S. Since we already had a lifetime visiting/staying in Baja (non tourist areas, mostly) we knew we were looking for the places not on most gringos' radars... Where we are right now in Michoacan there are very few gringos and not many people speak English. Perfect! And we have planned to be (right down the road from ya'll!) at a small town outside of Oaxaca city when we leave here...we'll stay most of the winter months there except perhaps for a few months at the Oaxaca beaches and perhaps a week or so in the Yucatan (flying in, leaving the RV for that one). While we are limited to places that have RV parks and good transportation we're seeing a lot of great non-gringo places even doing it this way. BTW, also, the towns like this one, that are kind of touristy but mostly with Mexican tourists, are also pretty great! Long term plan, since who knows where things are going, is that we know we can always use Mexico as a jumping off point if we decide to go check out places like Ecuador in the future. Low cost of flights, stays, etc. makes this so much more possible for us now! Don't get me wrong, we LOVE Mexico and would love to stay here the rest of our lives BUT it's really good to have options after seeing how crazy and expensive and weird things have gotten in the U.S. Yeah...

To be honest, everywhere is changing. But somehow Mexico seems to be coming up on a lot of people's radar as a better option when it comes to living costs, getting fresh foods, etc. And they still hold to certain traditions especially when it comes on to family. I like that. They seem very humble people and respectful especially to their elders, which is not the case in most modern society.

I would bet most people are just repeating the patterns of someone that they know when infact things have changed. If you do your homework and it leads you to a happy life in Mexico that is awesome...it is the country for you. Just be sure to do your homework.

I love that you guys are always so transparent. Aside from the cost of living (the peso is on the come-up for sure...I had to take GDL and SMA off my list), my main concern is moving somewhere where the majority of my neighbors are bitter, angry people trying to escape the U.S.'s so-called "woke" culture. And I get the brunt of their anger/entitlement attitudes. What's most important to me is: A peaceful, diverse, inclusive community. It's a big, wide world.

What Do I Want? I WANT PEACE! Right now….Mexico is still worth it. I am exploring the different States in Mexico. My next stop this month is a small country town outside of Puebla. I am looking for community, independent sustainability. Whereas, people live together on a huge property with their own dwellings and have healing, spiritual and a fun healthy life style. There is a main community house for any positive and healing activity. We are totally off Grid with solar energy and independent water from wells and other natural resources. We grow our own food and have other animals for food and for the natural balance of life. Anyway, Mexico does have many of these types of communities. It is just finding the right one that has good energy and I feel comfortable. I am in Huatulco Oaxaca right now and will be here till February 2024 then hopefully on to Puebla more permanently. We’ll See!

Here in Mexico, foreigners are respected, whether you are American or South American. But here in Mexico and in LATAM in general, the United States is seen as a threat. like an empire that one day abused and is latent to repeat it. How have you experienced this situation of anti-American sentiment? Does it bother you that people make anti-Yankee comments? Have you suffered discrimination or aggression under anti-Yankee arguments?

That's a good question. I watch a few others Vloggers who live and travel in Mexico. They still like it yet have noticed inflation ,increased rentals or homes. I have a friend from my church who speaks Spanish fluently, as a on-line well-paying job, is divorced with grown kids. So he up and sold his home here and bought a home in Bucerias near Puerto Vallarta. He's been there 6 months and likes it.I'm sorry I can't by you a coffee, it doesn't work on my end. I won't do patreron for you because I don't want to involve my credit card like that. I feel bad and worry that you aren't earning enough income/money. Any other way to get money to you like Pay pal. inflation is only like a small factor by Pesos, but if your fund is in US Dollars, the exchange rate rise actually contributes more than 20%, in a total of 30% cost of living uprise if comparing last year As of today the exchange rate is 1USD:16.7MX$, and it’s been for a month so far, from news headlines says there will be mass exodus of those 2 millions Americans expats, probably move back is better idea if this exchange rate continues for a long time Mexico Will See a Mass Exodus of Americans if the Dollar ... Traducir esta página pesos strong mexico mass exodus de … 13 jul 2023 - The escalating value of the Mexican peso versus the failing US dollar threatens to spark a dramatic escape of American 'gringos' residing in ...
@ctjewett
@ctjewett Жыл бұрын
Mexico is still Mexico, and my purpose for being here hasn't changed. That said, the super peso is really devastating my economy right now. Durable goods now are *much* more expensive than the US. Food is almost as expensive. My housing went up from $568 to $730/mo in one year simply from peso strength. It's still cheaper than the USA, but my travel is now far more limited, and I'm doing a lot more to conserve my money and live more simply. If I didn't have the same commitments to Mexico, and I was in your shoes or the shoes of some other expats, I might consider using this time to go explore other countries out there right now, returning to Mexico when the market cools down some. I completely agree with you, go where the gringos don't go. Unfortunately, it's getting harder and harder to avoid, as places that used to be off the gringo radar have showed up on the gringo radar due to KZbin and other social media. Any cool place seems to get overrun really quickly once word gets out. I absolutely adored Guadalajara, but prices between December 2021 and December 2022 were more than double for hotels/AirBNB, food, tours. I literally have photos from my Tequila tour in December 2021 where cantaritos were 2x$80 pesos, and one year later, 1 for $110. I have photos of the same place where a family pack of carnitas went from $300 pesos to $500 pesos. My old AirBNB I first paid $21/night for, but was $48/night when I went to go back. Not only did I see a lot more gringos going this year, but I found that people weren't nearly as friendly one year later, either. That last bit really hurt more than simply the cost of things being dramatically more expensive. I've also noticed, when I've had to go in for the INM for various things, the offices are a lot slower now, no Americans anymore, and a lot of Colombians are there now. That's just been my observation, having been to INM about 7 times in the last year. So, I think Mexico really is changing, and fast. On top of everything, cartel violence seems to be up in this part of the country, as two high profile murders just happened in the local mall, as well as a local Colectivo driver was killed just being in the way on the escape route. A Mexican friend tells me there's been a lot of activity of illegal road blocks and car jackings happening along the coast by Ixtapa-Zihuantanejo, as well. It's not changing anything for me, personally, but... I could definitely see it having an impact on others.

Mexico is a popular destination for expatriates and retirees due to its diverse culture, beautiful landscapes, warm climate, and relatively lower cost of living compared to many Western countries. The country offers a range of lifestyle options, from bustling cities to tranquil beach towns and picturesque mountain villages. However, like any other place, Mexico has its own set of challenges, including concerns about safety and security in certain regions. It is essential to thoroughly research and consider various factors such as healthcare, local laws, and infrastructure before making a decision to live or retire in Mexico. Consulting with expat communities and legal professionals, like The YARBROS, who specialize in international retirement can be helpful in making an informed choice. Thanks, THE YARBROS!

I been to CDMX once four years ago and stayed for 5days. I instantly fell in love. Just couldn’t believe how comfortable and amazing the lifestyle was. But I will say once I went to that Roma Norte neighborhood I was like woah! There’s a lot of expats here and I felt like I was in an area of Brooklyn, NY again (bushwick) and I got that ick 😅So I quickly left and went back to my Airbnb area lol. I just know it’s gotten 10x worse now every since COVID-19. I just can’t seem to go live in another country and have American expat neighbors. No offense it’s just not what I want for myself. That privileged mindset and condescending undertone most have is like a sickness lol. Anyways I hope the locals don’t get pushed out by them or get priced out. Mexico is big country though so there’s enough space and opportunity for growth I guess.

Left US in May for Merida. Homes are very affordable but we know better deals are across the country. I LOVE our church. However, Queretaro continues to call mi nombre. 🤤

IF you are willing to live within a local community and not in the "Gringo Expat enclaves" and IF you are willing to adapt to the local lifestyle (no Central Heat/Air, no pool, no tennis court, no malls), you'll be fine. I live on Social Security but since it's a stable income, I found a young Mexican couple who just inherited an older small apartment and it's been mutually beneficial. Locals have to move because of their work, but I'm always here so there is always a small steady income to fix things up unit by unit. In a few years, I will return to the U.S. and they will have a nice source of income for themselves, and they feel like my kids now! Double blessings

Love Mexico's rural areas, especially Yucatan and Veracruz, but the thing is: cases in fact: God help you if you are scraped by a random rusty piece of metal (1 in Merida), step on a rusty nail (1 in Quintana Roo countryside), trip into a deep hole or uneven sidewalk & fall and hit your head on the cement (3 in Oaxaca City) --- and need a doctor/hospital/tetanus shot Immediately. I guess you youngies take more chances. **Mexico is worth it IF you can afford to take care of the expense of Any Situation/Accident/Arrest/Illness that may arise.** Especially out in the boonies, some folks may not be able to afford to help you in any way, or be afraid to, some dire poverty and humble desperation in the countryside. Or, it could take a long ride to a hospital. Cities, naturally, have the best medical options & good ones. I Have Lots of Love for Mexico❤️

Cool, I hear you. We believe the risks are acceptable. Although we do worry about spider bites. We've seen some big ones!

I agree that the risks are acceptable. People need to know to watch every step they take & be more aware of where they walk: this has been the mistake by 3 people i know. And, Know your insects.😆 It's not generally an easier life than n the U.S., but it can be much less stressful, healthier with fresh food, and contentment. It all depends upon one's acceptance of small compromises in daily life. It is worth it if you are happy. I found the adherence to traditions and the importance of family life and faith very comforting. I could not accept water issues, not flushing tp, and lower bus/truck emissions control. Otherwise, I loved it.

If you have an expired tourist Visa, you qualify for Mexican Temporary Residence (amnesty/Covid relief), with no income requirement. You still have to pay for 4 yrs $600US but all of this Visa paperwork can be done from Mexico.

Mmmmmm…..I believe that program no longer exist. My husband had an expired visa and he did not qualify for that program because you had to have been in Mexico during a specific time frame. It is definitely something people should check out if the program still exists.
