My second favorite album oat. I love how it's able to sound so vast and gargantuan while still being as intimate and relatable as a great lo-fi Indie folk record. I also think the concept that connects the Microphones' "elemental trilogy" is really intriguing, yet every song can still be appreciated on its own while completely ignoring the concept

I love this album, but was unaware there was a trilogy, I know Mount Eerie is the “sequel” but what is its predecessor? You said Elemental trilogy, so I’m wondering if Mount Eerie is Earth, The Glow is Air or Fire, and then the predecessor would be IWHWSITW, representing water?
@indigosvn4 жыл бұрын
nice- illmatic might be my number 1 and this number 2
@108Mics4 жыл бұрын
Sassy Sasquatch yea, IWHWSITW is water, Glow Pt 2 is fire and Mount Eerie is Earth. They all tell a story about a relationship starting and then ending and then Phil dying and exploring the world as a ghost. “The Glow Pt 2” is meant as a continuation of not only the song “The Glow” from IWHWSITW, but also the whole motif of the “glow” representing the beautiful things you see in a person after you fall in love (there’s also tracks like “The Gleam Pt 2” and the (something) interludes that tie it back to the previous album as well)

this makes me so fucking happy. like many, this was my intro to the microphones/phil elverum's projects, and opened me up his massive discography. i have a lot of love for the guy. i hope he's doing alright these days. i wanna discuss the actual music but idek where to start. I will say that i slept on "it was hot, we stayed in the water" for way too long. also really love the metal influence on clear moon/ocean roar. this shit is making me nostalgic.

I always thought the title track was right after a failed suicide attempt by hanging. It's such a devastating and perfect song. I don't know if many people talked about how different listening to this album feels after listening to "A Crow Looked at Me". Because I feel lie a lot of his disdain towards art feeling fabricated and exaggerated can be connected to this record. I almost feel like current day Phil is talking down to his younger self saying "You thought you knew what pain was, but you have no fucking clue what real pain is". Which is so interesting because "The Glow Pt 2" is so beautifully morbid and is known for that, but when Phil reflects he feels it to be a bit surface level. This is still my favorite album by Phil but it's so interesting to see his evolution.

I couldn’t agree more it’s the way i’ve always seen it. The sound at the start of the song has always sounded like the rope snapping, I always felt I was projecting that image but part of me has always known that to be the truth.
@gotf4 жыл бұрын
James Plimbley Totally can relate about projecting. I discovered the album at a time where I needed to hear these stories and needed to know that I wasn’t crazy for feeling the way I did. So in a way it did bring me a lot of comfort in reading the song this way.
@skullcandy6244 жыл бұрын
Josh B. That’s similar to my story I found this and dawn at around the same time and found it comforting to find someone writing something so sympathetic to the idea of being alone. At that point I was a fan for life and the first time I heard a crow looked at me it changed my perspective and made me realise perhaps in the darkest way possible that things could be so much worse.
@gotf4 жыл бұрын
James Plimbley around the time for me I exhausted every Elliott Smith song, and even had a Bright Eyes phase even though it’s harder to return to them as I got older. But having those artist in your life is so important. And Elliott’s music ages like wine. Dawn is one I love too.
@skullcandy6244 жыл бұрын
Josh B. I still hold a place for elliot’s music deep in my heart for sure but phil jusr filled that hole in terms of just pure raw emotional music that speaks the truth through no filter. And that’s not to say Elliot’s music isn’t brutally true and real but phil just seems to hit that note for me like nothing else.

Such a beautiful record man. Even crazier when you consider the alleged lore behind it (that it was recorded by Elverum basically in secret at the K Records studio when everyone had gone home). Made pretty much with no outside input, in a very rushed/spontaneous manner, and with an incomplete knowledge of the equipment he was recording with. It all contributes to the incredible & unique sound of the album though. It sounds like nothing else ive ever heard and I love that about it

This album was basically my holy grail when I started trying to record my own music in my late teens. I never wanted to imitate it but in terms of the production (the way the production almost feels like part of the songwriting process fascinates me still) and the overall feeling of tangiblity, like this album just breathes. It feels like the campfire on the cover, something to huddle close to. That sensation was a guiding star for my own music. Phil Elverum is still probably my favourite producer, and one of my favourite songwriters. Dawn is my favourite album of his now, but he has so many great ones

Really interesting and comforting in a way to hear that idea of being able to relate to not wanting exposure to places where you been with an ex-lover. Dating people in NYC (or any city) when you don't live directly in that city, has a way to taint that city. You end up with a lot of memories tied to a few of the major hubs, stations, and streets. Concert venues and bars get like that too. Only thing I could ever do was force myself to go back through those areas with real purpose and see them for myself on my own terms, but, for sure there's always those places you tend to avoid, those albums that get locked out to live in their moment.

Damn, I’m so glad you did this one dude, easy 10/10 album for me. You mentioned so many of my fav lines from this, which might have some of the best lyrics of any album ever, but probably the best lyrics from this one are in the title track, imo.. I get your interpretation, and definitely agree it’s not suicidal, but I’ve basically always seen this song as encouragement, at least for me. It’s definitely describing a moment of gripping one’s mortality, wondering if the pain and hurt will ever end, and realizing, “there is no end”, which is both paradoxical, but also freeing. It’s very Buddhist imo. It’s gotten me through so many times in my life where I really considered ending it, or I thought I’d be dead soon; from miserable withdrawal, to heartbreak from death, heartbreak from failed romantic relationships, etc... I almost can’t listen to that second verse, and the coda, without tears welling up in my eyes and a lump growing in my throat, but to me that coda, the instrumental shift and build, it’s the sound of perseverance in the face of adversity, understanding that I still am, so I have to keep going... Shit, I could write an essay about every song. You mentioned, “The Moon”, which has my second fav lyrics of the album.. “I Want Wind To Blow”, which was basically the theme song to my youth.. so many great songs, and lines.. Shit, I mean, those closing lines to “Headless Horseman”... fuck, I don’t think any breakup songs have made me ball like that song has.. I remember quite literally listening to it on headphones, in the woods, clinging “to rocks and wind”, and crying like a baby.. lol.. I gotta stop. Great album, perfect 10. Not just a breakup album, though it is that. It’s also a very spiritual album, and there’s a lot of truth in the lyrics that I think go far beyond just heartbreak and the aftermath. This album is about learning to live as a human being aware of your condition. It’s as Buddhist as it is existential imo. Ok, I digress. ✌️

My favorite album, it was the soundtrack to a painful 2018, as well as a lot of Microphones and Mount Eerie records. "The Moon" is one of the greatest songs ever recorded imo, how he makes the song sound so epic despite having such a little budget and lo-fi production is inspiring, and going back to old places to try and make new memories there despite the previous memories with an ex affecting your mind hit too close to home for me. The whole record is still as heart-wrenching and exciting for me as the first time I heard it. If I may ask Myke, did you check out Microphones in 2020? If so, what did you think?
