Mingus "Ah Um" was my introduction to jazz a couple of years ago. Its a little more accessible and catchy. He was an incredible bassist and pianist and in my opinion one of the greatest composers and arrangers of his time. I can recommend you "Journey In Satchidananda" by Alice Coltrane. Its my favourite jazz album and a super deep, psychedelic listening experience. She is playing the harp like you've never heard, lots and lots of shakers and percussion, catchy and hypnotising bass melodies, an indian tanpura and fantastic sax solos. If you want to hear some more recent jazz or stuff that has more of a hip hop crossover you could check out The Comet Is Coming. They released a really spiritual and fun album this year.

Fuck yeah!! Mingus was one of the first jazz guys I got into. Truly unique, no one else composes like him. For more jazz: 1. Miles Davis - Four & More (one of the best jazz quintets) 2. Miles Davis - In a Silent Way (one of the best fusion albums) 3. Gretchen Parlato - The Lost and Found (modern vocal jazz) 4. Watch some jazzy Bobby Mcferrin stuff like with Chick Corea and Richard Bona. (Bobby is so fun) 5. Fire Orchestra - Exit / Enter (crazy free jazz/rock big band, almost swans-y) There's so much more. Coltrane, Brad Mehldau, Vijay Iyer, Ornette Coleman, Thelonious Monk, Oscar Peterson, etc. I didn't recommend more super avant garde stuff like Cecil Taylor bc I think that is better to get into later. I also recommend going early into jazz stuff, exploring musicians and seeing what they played on for more great records. More modern instrumental jazz is kind of like IDM to me, lots of intricate things happening that don't fully line up, but create this great thing. It just takes a while to start to listen to it like that. Glad you enjoyed this!

Actually, it's symphonies that are generally divided into 4 movements, concerto's into 3. In ballet movements are any of the formalized actions of a dancer that follow specific rules regarding the positions of the arms, feet, and body. A classical ballet is divided into 3 sections: the opening pas de deux (dance for two), or adagio; variations or individual performances by the partners, first by the male and then by the female; and the final pas de deux, or coda. Mingus was a stickler for charting his music, and although some parts may seem chaotic everyone in the band had the sheet music in front of them and it was all written out. Except of course for those sections given over to improvisations. I'm glad you loved this music. Jazz is America's classical music, is just as difficult to play, but doesn't take a refined or snooty ear to follow or understand...and neither does classical music for that matter. But Jazz, along with the Blues, R&B, R&R, Hip-Hop, Big Band Music, Dixieland music, Disco, World Music and tons of others are all a part of our heritage: yours, and mine. All invented by black peoples around the world and all originally intend as a dance or social musics. A lot of people here recommend older musics, and they are all great and exciting. Try them all. Of older cats I would also recommend all of Art Blakey's Jazz Messenger stuff, Trane, all of Charlie Parker and Dizzy, Bill Evans and the big band stuff of Duke Ellington. Add or course Miles' Prestige and Columbia recordings, especially the great quintet with Herbie, Ron Carter, Tony Williams and Wayne Shorter. Some newer artists to explore are Ambrose Akinmusire, Kamasi Washington, Chris Potter, Christian McBride, Stephon Harris, Aaron Diehl, the beauty and touch of Fred Hersch, and Sullivan Fortner. Some recent vocalists to explore are Cecile McLorin Salvant, Jazzmeia Horn, and Veronica Swift. Good luck on your new journey. Let me know when you're ready for classic music.

Oh damn, a Jazz virgin being dumped on Black Lady and The Sinner Lady is kinda daunting. It's jazz sure, but not very accessible and certainly not a representation of what jazz usually sounds like (era related). You'd probably been much better served with some of Miles Davis Fusion era albums or Duke Ellington's Big band work. That being said, Black Lady and Sinner Lady is an utter masterpiece. The specific style of jazz played is called Third Stream (although Mingus would hate it being categorized), basically it's jazz but with classical structures.

Say Bruh, if you're looking for an on ramp to jazz Mingus is quite a bit to set your teeth into; be careful not to break 'em. My advice: find yourself a quality jazz radio station (I listen to WBGO in NYC metro area.) Find a suitable programming block on the station(s) you sample and just listen and learn. Radio is key because you'll get a variety of subjective programming selections and if the hosts are any good, they'll educate you about their selections through out their block. If you're intent upon building some sort of collection, stick to established standards, by established artist (Miles, Coltrane, Gillespie, Brubeck, etc.) Don't bite off more than you can chew. Enjoy!
