Nice video. Please make a video where you analyze the relationship between MIDI timing clock and tempo in BPM.

Thanks! What kinds of things do you want to know beyond what I say at 12:18 ?

I'm lucky to have bumped into this video because it contains all the information I always wanted to know with regards to MIDI. I just couldn't find a source from where to obtain such information. And I have to say well done, as it is presented in a very professional manner. I've also watched the other video which is up to standard like this one. I will download both to keep them for my reference. I like using MIDI to be able to use external synths from my DAW and to use VSTs etc... I see it as a nice subject that seems to be always expanding, there is almost always something else to learn. Thank you and if you have further videos like these by all means send them to us 👍

i wrote my first midi-apps with gfa-basic on an atari-computer. it was a lot of fun, loading, changing and writing back preset data or changing parameters directly...

Ah! Awesome! I was thinking about doing a quickie video about sending raw MIDI data in Pd (like I do at 12:39 here). Seems like that kind of hacking is where stuff starts to get really interesting.

It's funny, I started using MIDI in mid-1986 as a working keyboardist, and my MIDI knowledge grew as my performance needs grew, but not one bit more, and it stayed like that for a long time. Around 1998, I finally recorded MIDI in the box and realized the gaping holes in my knowledge of the protocol - after a few months playing with Acid Pro and enjoying the crazy wav stretching, I bought Logic and was faced with "MIDI Byte 2" for the first time. WTF was byte 2? I was at the back of the line again. All of that is to say that I knew of and used SYSEX from 1990 forward, but only as as a backup format for my drum machine & sequencer, and eventually a sync protocol for my live rig via an upgrade to my Alesis Datadisk which I still own and love, but it uses Double-Density floppies, so *yikes*. But I thought I was done, then around 2015 I hear people are using SYSEX as a real-time complement to MIDI CC, RPN/NRPN and god knows what else because workstations like KRONOS etc have too many features. Will I ever master MIDI and SYSEX? Does it matter? That's my cross to bear, but thanks for reading this anyway. I ponder these things alone and jump at any chance to talk to anybody who knows/uses MIDI at it's deepest levels. Even if it's a one-way conversation with strangers, LOL. All the best!

Really appreciated, the amount of effort you put into making these so informative, especially the visual side of the whole lesson and mentioning real world examples. Thanks a ton!

Interesting, it became more clear when you showed the max example.

Thanks. I agree. I just didn't want to scare off folks that didn't have any Max or Pd experience. That said, as I mentioned in another comment here, I'm planning on doing a quickie video on sending out raw MIDI in Max or Pd, because there's a lot of potential there for musical mischief.

I failed in the language PureBasic to receive SYSEX DUMP from my hardware synth. Have you had any luck doing that in Python?
@SimonHutchinson Жыл бұрын
Unfortunately, I've never tried myself. Maybe someone else here can comment if they've got any experience.
