I watched an interview with an old British BoB fighter pilot. He said that they didn't worry about the Me109's being higher than they were (higher service ceiling) as they felt that if the germans wanted to fight they had to come down to where they were. I guess the fighters were more focused on downing the bombers anyway.
@MDzmitry2 жыл бұрын
"Baiting" the germans lower remained a proper strategy even by '43, if memory serves. In James Edgar Johnson's book there is a fight mentioned, where a group of Spitfire Mk.IXs flew underneath a group of Fw.190s (or were it 109s?) waiting for them to attack. And it actually worked out in the end.

Hey great video again GS. I recently got into il2 and I'm wondering if anyone has any tips regarding their preferred control setup or anything they think is helpful to know.
@forlornfoe3 жыл бұрын
As a kind of minimal hardware I recommend a joystick with twist axis (rudder) and a head movement tracker: that tracker helps immensely allowing hands to use more controls and less fiddling around trying to spot stuff, especially vital when dogfighting. I use a DelanClip head tracker and freeware tracking software, mid-level price for great performance once you survive the setup process. Graphics settings are fairly easy to experiment with even during flight. Generally V-sync eats some resources but eliminates screen tearing and obviously mirror, shadow and anti-aliasing quality are not essential if your PC is struggling to keep up. Most of the settings offer a small explanation what they do once you hover cursor over them. Camera settings matter quite a lot, experiment to get proper ones for your control setup (and likely tick "head shake" off, easier to at least start without it). I am not a master of the game by any means, simply tutored a few friends into it so feel free to toss questions when they arise and I might be able to assist.
@sethlaporte71403 жыл бұрын
@@forlornfoe thanks. Much appreciated. I've been using my mouse to look around and a cheap thrustmaster joystick for flight control. Also my mouse buttons control rudder. I'll definitely look into head tracking
@forlornfoe3 жыл бұрын
@@sethlaporte7140 I too used mouse for looking, took me 8 years to get into head tracking and never looked back. Far as I know, there are three major options for head tracking systems and probably more niche makers I have never heard of. The most popular head tracker is likely TrackIR, which uses its own software. I have heard them working well and being easy to use, with minor hiccups like occasionally not registering a head movement correctly. Generally TrackIR is the most expensive but also easiest to use choice. Then comes DelanClip that relies on freeware software like Opentrack. The setup took me maybe 3 hours to get running properly (mainly Delanclip's camera being picky about USB ports and then Opentrack not finding that camera). After slogging through the setup, that system has worked flawlessly for half a year. Price-wise DelanClip is in the middle. For going very cheap, modified camera and signal sender (just 3 infrared lights on a stick) can be home-made and then simply coined with freeware software. I was too lazy to research this properly and just bought a set.

True that it helps newcomers but thinking of throttle as percentages is not very good in the long run. In DCS how does VR work with respect to the obscure cockpit switches you need to throw? I image you have the headset on, the throttle and stick controls with lots of buttons.. but you can't see these things or the keyboard/mouse and don't have the VR hand controllers in your hand. I imagine you get used to the stick/throttle controls by feel. What about the rest of the cockpit? How do you make that work? Sorry if this is a dumb question- I've used VR only once or twice and don't own one yet.
@CakePrincessCelestia3 жыл бұрын
DCS has multiple approaches... 1) Just map everything to HOTAS with modifiers 2) Use keyboard blindly (needs practice, obviously, but is possible actually) 3) Have a cursor locked in the center of view and mouse buttons and scroll features mapped to HOTAS or keystrokes 4) Just use the mouse like in pancake 5) Take the VR controller (interact with finger tip while grip is pressed or "laserpointer" + cursor and mouse buttons + scroll wheel mapped to the stick and trigger 6) Get PointCTRL which is a set of tracked rings with a few buttons on it so you don't need to grab anything (basically emulating mouse inputs, but positionally calibrated relative to the headset) I use the VR controllers - I mean I'd have to take a hand off either throttle or stick anyway, the advantage of the controller over a mouse is that you point at things in the cockpit around you, regardless of where you look at (should be visible though so you see what you flip) whereas when using the mouse, the cursor wanders with head movement which basically makes it hard to get muscle memory on it. But many went the PointCTRL way as it's an improvement over grabbing the mouse.

It's the G-4. Short guide: G-2: has retractable tail wheel G-4: tail wheel sticking out (strengthened gear being the main difference, also had a different radio set IIRC) G-6: 13mm guns with bulges right in front of the cockpit G-6 late: Bigger vertical stabilizer and usually the Erla canopy with better rearward visibility (not entirely sure about the canopy in Il-2 GB at the moment since there's many options to mod the airplanes like taking the headrest armor out) G-14: bigger gear bulges on top of the wings due to larger wheels (and MW-50, but you can't see that)

@@CakePrincessCelestia Thanks. I was being lazy as GS pointed out, I took a quik look and guessed. Gustav was good, but I'm a Friedrick kind of fellow.

@@Tamburello_1994 Fair point - the F-4 is considered the pinnacle by many, except for Galland probably, who preferred his personal F-6 that had the wing cannons added and a cigar holder in the cockpit :D G-2 is closest though, still pretty agile, but faster.
