At first Buddhism is not involved, there are only Chinese Gods, Taoism became more popular and influence the majority of the Chinese Mythology. Then after Buddhism spread from India to China(by then there is a solid civilization and some myths and legends are developed), it became popular and accepted as well. So the "mythology" of Buddha and Taoism/Chinese becomes mixed. Then the stories from then on recognized these two pantheon that exist side by side. Usually in stories the important figures of both sides respected each other but they are not under the rule of either side. But generally Buddha is seen as much much more powerful. As seen in the Monkey King story. He defeat the entire Chinese pantheon and before he could do worse, Buddha intervened and subdue him effortlessly.

Actually, they don't. These myths are recent creations. Original stories of these deities are nowhere near as powerful or their stories are related as it was told today. These gods and background are created/added to make unified Chinese mythological universe as DC and marvel did in 1960. btw China had shit tons of tribes and their myths. These are just cherry-picked gods who they think their power might equal to Christian gods and suit their narratives. They tried that in the Ming dynasties as Jade emperor (the court ) as the centre. These Gods are another recent attempt to patch their theology and Taoist cosmology on par with other religions.

Sun Wukong the monkey king is hands down my favorite! Saw Guan Yu in a game and immediately liked him. Seen some of the others from movies, but this is the first time I've got to learn about the warlike side of the Jade emperor, and it's really cool. TBH I used to think he was a lousy, oversoft king god with zero battle skills, and could not compare to popular king gods like Zeus and Amun Ra, but now I know better . Never really knew of Hou Yi, Fuxi and pangu till now. Thank you very much for this video. How I enjoy learning about the mythology of other different cultures.

Yes, there are extant local variants of flood stories all over the world. Particularly anywhere that there was a river culture that formed a greater society later on. China's flood story is actually it's earliest origin story. Yu the great fought the malevolent water demons and united China, or also the less tall version of Yu the Great as an engineer who routes the waters through early science. Think about it, you and a few thousand other people live and farm along rivers which are flood prone areas. Every year or two the rains come and sweep away hundreds of people. You'd come up with a great flood story for the big one that came during a bad El Nino year. The Biblical flood myth actually comes from an earlier Sumerian one, almost verbatim. Also a secondary version exists in the Epic of Gilgamesh but was written later on. There are far fewer flood myths from remote mountainous cultures, you'd have to ask yourself why that is.

This is really educational to me as my mother's half is Chinese. And I love learning about deities and different gods and goddesses. But I find it interesting about the four devine animal beings as I always thought it was the dragon, Phoenix, turtle and tiger instead of Kirin. Ok now I see your confusion. The four divine animal beings I said were the 四大神兽 (which literally translates to the four godly/divine beasts). There is another four called 四大灵兽 (which literally means the four spiritual/divine beasts) which are the 凤凰 phoenix, 龙 dragon, 龟 turtle and 麒麟 Kirin. Notice that even though both categories contains "phoenix" it's actually a mistranslation as the former one really is the "red bird" which was supposed to be more powerful than phoenix. In fact, the former categories, if you have to compare, is more ancient and powerful and one and only, as to they are almost godly and each of them guards one of the four directions. The latter describes four categories of powerful beasts that roam the earth, so there can be multiple Kirins, for example.

The most interesting Pantheon of deities i know of today. I've always been fascinated with Chinese culture but little did i know their culture would both amaze me and sadden me at the same time for there are many tragic heroes but I'm excited to know that their tragedy and heroic deeds ascended them into Godhood. Actually, Guan Yu is the god of brotherhood. It's doesn't matter whether it's the military, police or criminal triads which all worship him... He is in fact the god of brotherhood. I mean even in the worship ceremony, all swore to the brotherhood of the organization with Guan Yu as the witness. I don't even know why and how he is known as the god of war. Chinese Gods do not insist it is the only one like a dictator. Chinese Gods respect democracy and do not condemn anyone to hell just for being a disbeliever. Historically, more people were killed in wars and purges in the name Christianity than any other war... luckily it is mostly between Christians who insist that their version of the religion is purer. Chinese Gods are humble and do not demand absolute loyalty but only good behavior and deeds and do not condemn other religions, unlike Abrahamic religions. If Christian God is a leader of a nation, he is a dictator, demanding constant praise and punishing anyone who thinks different. Guanyin is worshiped the most in modern china. Nearly every family in China's village would worship her and have her statue placed at home. When my grandma was alive, she would take me to Guangyin Temple on Guangyin's birthday every year! Guangyu is worshiped mostly by businessmen as well as Caishenye (a fortune ruler god who isn't introduced here). Other gods are more often appeared in fantasy tv series or movies.

Their also another demigod aside from Erlang Shen. His sister Sanshengmu married a mortal scholar and gave birth to their Demigod son Chen Xiang. It's really remarkable that China being as the world's most atheistic country have such a rich religious legacy and such a great array of deities whom are governing various affairs of this world. Among these twelve deities The Jade Emperor and The Monkey King are my most favorite. The Jade Emperor became the Ruler of the Heavens by doing such a great deed but the Monkey King was punished by The Buddha for his misdemeanor but later achieved enlightenment.

Also if you are interested, there is an ancient book called (Classic of Mountain and Seas) which was written at least 2200 years ago. In the ancient times this book was considered an accurate geography book and not something of Mythology. Nonetheless this book has very important historical significance to the belief of the Chinese. :D Its a fascinating book! Like Harry Potters Fantastic Beasts but thousands of years old :D

It's fascinating if you track the various myths and stories, especially around the middle east, Europe area. The Chinese mythology appears fairly separate from most others, apart from the obvious later connections with Buddism and a few others. There a slight cross over with Japanese myths to but its very difficult to know when such things happened or which way the exchange was but most favour China as first. However the trace of Mesopotmian and Sumerian mythology and Egyptian mythology around the various parts of Europe and its effects on the Abrihamic faiths are fairly clear, not surprising when much of the early Jewish texts were actually written when the Jews were in Sumerian after being taken there by Nebuchadnezzar II, what's more natural than to pick the parts of the stories you are hearing that fit your narrative and helps you to say the various things that you need to.
