There's one Egyptian deity that I pretty much never hear about. He's Anubis' brother, Wepwawet. From what I recall, he was blue in color (or at least depicted as such) and he would help the deceased in their journey, fighting off dangers along the path.

One of my favorite "unsung" Egyptian Gods is "Bastet" the Goddess of Cats (amongst other things such at domesticity.) I first became aware of her in a Witchblade/Tomb Raider comic in which the heroes, Sarah Pezzini and Lara Croft, find themselves having to battle the ancient deity. Bastet does seem, in recent years, to be getting more recognition, probably why she was not mentioned in this video. I do like learning about other, lesser known, Egyptian Gods.

Khnum is literally looking like they depict Satan!:P And Hapi reminded me a lot some Hindu gods with his blueish skin and lotus flowers.
@moongirl7864 жыл бұрын
That's because post-Biblical Christian depictions of Satan drew directly from pagan horned gods such as Pan, Cernunnos, and Khnum. The Egyptian god Amun also had ram's horns, so possible inspiration there too. This likely combined with the Biblical concept of the scapegoat, and the Canaanite "false" god Ba'al, into an evil goatman who craves human sacrifice and souls. The Bible never describes this concept; "Satan" is just a word for "adversary", and that was used as a name for the beast or the dragon of Revelations over time. The name Lucifer is even less associated; Lucifer literally means Morning Star, and just refers to the planet Venus as seen in the early morning. Its a Latin word, sometimes used as a pronoun for a personification of the Morning Star, sometimes simply as a noun. Devil history 101 :P

I watched a show awhile back, and they stated that the Egyptian gods as we know them are more a product of the Greek influence rather than being representative of the Egyptian culture. Does anyone have some insight on this? I suspect the source I heard it from had a Greek bias, so I'm not sure how seriously I should take them.
@nopeace14263 жыл бұрын
that would be false, the Egyptians pre-date the Greeks as we know them. In fact historical documents show that the ancient Greeks traded with Egypt, during the trade they learned how to build from the Egyptians. Most likely the Egyptians influenced the Greeks, and the Greeks created their own religion based on Egyptian religion or at least some aspects. But they are completely different religions, and the Greek and Egyptian origin stories of their gods are completely different.
@stavrosskoulas7833 жыл бұрын
There is a Greek influence on the Egyptian mythology. Mostly because of the Greek Ptolemaic dynasty. The names of the Egyptian gods as we know them now were influenced from Greek. For example apophis ( which is the Greek version of the word) is more known than apep as the egyptians called it before the Greek dynasty. Last but not least the reason the archaeologist were able to translate the ancient Egyptian hieroglyphics was because during the Ptolemaic dynasty the hieroglyphics were mixed with ancient Greek creating in this way a new kind of script. So the archaeologists translated the already known Greek and figured what the hieroglyphics meant. So yeah the greeks had an influence on the Egyptian religion, not so much in its context , but mostly in its understanding. We both gave and received. For example there is a temple in northern Greece dedicated to worshipping the God Amun Zeus. You can also look for the God serapis (osiris+apis) a God warshiped In Egypt and many other parts of Alexander's empire who was based on osiris and apis and also influenced by demeter and hades and at some point almost took over the place of osiris as the husband of Isis.
@nopeace14263 жыл бұрын
@@stavrosskoulas783 that really is not enough to base it off, just names, the Greeks could have easily copied Egyptian names/gods. We do know, as I stated before, the Greeks learned building techniques from the Egyptians as that is well documented. As far as learning the language, it was due to a stone found, if I remember correctly that had a treaty of some kind written in 3 languages that they were able to find the meaning of hieroglyphics.
@stavrosskoulas7833 жыл бұрын
@@nopeace1426 he misunderstood what I tried to say. Obviously the Egyptian gods outdate the Greek pantheon. What I am saying is that the names as we know them now the "hellenized" Ones are more popular than the original ones. Also the tablet you mention was able be transcripted mostly because of the Greek. Now about the buildings and architecture. There are no documents that state in any sort of way that the greeks were influenced by the egyptians
