Readers of Aaron's blog know of his beef with the milk industrial complex. Why does milk, of all beverages, get a pass in our efforts to reduce everyone's caloric intake? Why is it encouraged, when all others are shunned? Is it because you need the calcium? Is it because it makes your bones stronger? Watch, and learn why the milk emperor has no clothes.

Having grown up in Europe and moved to the US for college, it's amazing to me how people here in the US obsessively delineate between bad foods to shut out at all costs and good foods to be ingested militantly. Of course they end up out of balance. Then they feel this huge sense of betrayal when it turns out a good food is a bad food. But other than poison, nutrition is never about good and bad. It's about balance.

What is healthier than a "balanced" diet? A diet of healthier foods with a lot of variety. For example, a whole food plant based diet is the healthiest option.

I don't think that "no other mammals drink milk as adults" is a valid argument. No other mammals wear shoes, either. Humans aren't other mammals. Many groups of humans have evolved to metabolize dairy, and that's fine. This said, I agree with the basic premise of the video. Milk is a caloric beverage that should be limited like anything else. However, the feeding habits of "other mammals" are completely irrelevant to the discussion.

The idea that because something isn't natural means we don't need it doesn't seemed very evidence based. The rest of the video was eye opening, but I'm always skeptical of arguments based on how humans survived thousands of years ago, so this particular argument seemed weak, even if your overall point is evidence based.

"No other mammals drink milk as adults" is a valid agrument, because we actually lose the enzyme lactate after around age 3. 75% of the human population is lactose intolerant (meaning they experience symptoms such as stomach cramps, nausea, diarrhea etc) because, humams are NOT designed to be digesting milk as adults, even breast milk. Comparing this to other mammals makes it clear that milk is only intended for infants. Cow's milk is designed for a baby cow to grow into a 500 pound cow in around about a year... not for humans, so how an earth can it be healthy for us? There's loads of antibodies in cow's milk (not including the ones caused by injecting antibiotics into the average dairy cow so she can survive the terrible, dirty, overcrowded conditions that make cows prone to infections) to help the baby cow to grow strong, but the human body doesn't recognise these antibodies and other substances, hence causes a immflamatory response, such as the formation of muccus. Shoes is completely unrelated to nurition.

Hannah McDonald, you present a lot of valid arguments why we don't need milk. And those in turn help explain why other mammals don't drink milk as adults. But by itself, "No other mammals drink milk as adults" seems to fall under the "Appeal to nature" fallacy.

In case anyone else was wondering, I decided to check some labels. Skim Milk: 90 Cal per 250 mL 2% Milk: 130 Cal per 250 mL Pulp Free, Unsweetened Orange Juice from Concentrate: 120 Cal per 250 mL (Edited: oops, I misread the label!) Yes, skim milk has very slightly more sugar content in it, but only because when you remove one thing from a set of things, everything else now takes up a larger portion of the total. Removing fat from milk increases the percentage of everything else, so 250mL of skim milk has a slightly higher amount taken up by sugars. The difference is negligible when compared against the sugar content of juices or pop / soda / fizzy drinks.
@sageyash
@sageyash 10 жыл бұрын
When you remove the fat the volume will decrease, a 5% sugar of 250ml with no fat is the same as a 5% sugar of 250ml with fat.
@MathAndComputers
@MathAndComputers 10 жыл бұрын
sageyash You might want to re-read that. Suppose, (for nice round numbers, not realistic numbers), fat was 50% of the first 250mL and sugars are 5%. If you remove the 50% fat, you have 125mL, of which that same amount of sugars now makes up 10%. In order to make 250mL, you need twice as much, so you double everything left, so sugar still makes up 10%, and the amount is twice as much as the original. It's not as drastic as that, of course, because fat doesn't make up 50% of milk; it just illustrates that the amount of sugar per volume does increase when you remove other things.

Sir Aaron, what to do with Osteoporosis? My gf was tested due to family, doctors found she has a very early stage. To prevent a life of pain and collapsing in old age, she's on higher dosages of calcium (as well as vitamin D), besides following the diet advice to consume diary products. If calcium (via for instance milk) doesn't associate with stronger bones to prevent fractures, what about the association with bone mineral density, as with osteoporosis? Greetings from Denmark....
@InorganicVegan
@InorganicVegan 10 жыл бұрын
It doesn't lead to differences in normal people. After all, milk contains a lot more calcium than you can absorb in one sitting, so it doesn't have an effect greater than eating a normal milkless diet.

Look into Magnesium supplementation, especially transdermal magnesium chloride. It's easiest for the body to absorb throughout the skin, much easier than through the digestive tract. In fact, the body needs magnesium to properly absorb calcium.

there are studies that show that digesting the acidic parts of dairy products requires more calcium than is in the product, so your body has to take it from your bones. milk would then make osteoporosis or osteopenia worse

When i was a teenager, i developed (what i interpreted to be) a slight intolerance to dairy. I switched most of my dairy intake to soy substitutes, which took some getting used to. After a while, i found i was still able to eat dairy based cheese, yogurt, and even milk in small amounts, but by then dairy milk had lost its appeal for me. I started drinking almond milk instead, which has a better taste, and works great in tea and cereal. I still eat cheese (in large amounts, because i love it), but i don't miss milk at all.

Amid the heaviest training during my hockey days, I averaged some 1.3 gallons of milk per day. Taking average care of my dental hygiene, I've had no issues what so ever with my teeth, my nails are still strangely well-kept in spite of me not using (or ever having used) any kind of cosmetics for it, I still have healthy hair, and have seemed rather resistant to bone fractures and breakage. I've never suffered any deficiency of iron, but that could perhaps be explained through my regular consumption of blood-based dishes, such as swedish blood pudding. Nor have I had any stomach issues with my milk intake, but then again, I can basically eat spoiled food and get away with a bit of an upset stomach the next day. Conversely, my girlfriend's mother suffered from calcium deficiency, and is now stuck with some manner of bone brittleness. I'm well aware that anecdotal evidence requires statistical backing to be of any use (and that my consumption was, to say the least, excessive), making my above story virtually worthless in an actual, formal argument, but I just wanted to establish that I come from a very... milky background. My issue with this video is that I can't help but feel that Aaron makes it sound like we basically don't need the milk's calcium at all, as adults; but for many up here in the north, milk is the prime intake of calcium, and for some it's the only one. Equaling it to a beverage like soda, or some manner of garnish to add a "tasty" factor to other foods, is in my eyes potentially detrimental for those who require calcium through their milk intake. And hip fractures be damned, what about all the other benefits of calcium? en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Calcium#Nutrition I'm not saying "drink like me, you bastards", I'm just concerned that dissing excessively on milk in terms of its actual benefits and downplaying calcium's functions of the body can make some people swing the other way entirely, and think you don't need it at all.
@patrick5372
@patrick5372 10 жыл бұрын
Your diet has to be so f**ked up to not get calcium from other sources that milk consumption shouldn't be the first place you go. If you have any sort of meaningful variety in your diet (and absent a hereditary condition), things like Vitamin D intake and exercise will be far far more correlated with bone density than calcium. That should be another thing you get from all these studies. Its not just about milk. Frankly, high calcium intake just isn't as important as other things when it comes to bone health-regardless of where in your diet it comes from.
@Asrahn
@Asrahn 10 жыл бұрын
***** Granted, albeit my main point is not bone density, but rather concerns over insufficient calcium intake through branding milk a product meant to be used for cereal (which by far not everyone here eats), and to dip your oreos in. Again, I'm not arguing a high calcium intake, as it (as established) can even be harmful, as everything can be if excessively consumed. I'm just saying that for people who don't get much calcium other than through their milk, the notion of milk being virtually useless other than for "being tasty" may have them skip out on it out of fear of the calories - which could very well lead to deficiency.
@LinnersC
@LinnersC 10 жыл бұрын
Asrahn Many vegetables have a lot more calcium than milk (Kale, broccoli, spinach, garlic), are better and more efficiently absorbed than the calcium in milk, and don't have the harms of the excess sugars that even lactose tolerant people cannot digest that well and possible hormones in milk. I read a study (I don't have it on hand I'd have to go find it again) that looked at places where the population was mostly all lactose intolerant and found that those people did not have near the levels of bone disease (brittleness/breaks/osteoporosis) that places that regularly push milk as necessary like the USA. Remember correlation and causation, they weren't saying that milk causes the bone disease, I think it has to do with a lot of other factors, but drinking milk isn't making bone disease better. Don't get me wrong, I love milk and drink more or less a 4 litre jug once a week for myself. I'm also vegetarian and its a good source of vitamin B12 and protein. But out of all the studies that I've seen I have yet to see a conclusive study that shows that any diet that is without milk is lacking in calcium to the point of deficiency and disease. There really isn't a good health-based reason to drink milk regularly after childhood.

This video was shocking to me! My whole life I was told that I had to drink at least 3 cups of milk to get strong bones and to help my body grow by both my parents and pediatrician. As a child going into my teen years with Type One Diabetes, I would visit multiple doctors and all of them started to get worried when I wasn't growing at the average rate of most children my age. My parents made sure that I drank 3 cups of milk a day with a certain substance to try and help my growth rate increase that was prescribed by my pediatrician. I ended up growing only a little bit more after drinking the milk that was prescribed to me but not much before I stopped growing completely. After watching this video I wonder if the prescribed milk I had to drink actually worked or if my body just took it natural course. I found it extremely interesting that drinking milk has actually been proven to have no kind of effect on a persons risk for fracture or benefitting it. I also think that he made a good point that doctors are always trying to reduce an adults calorie intake but never seem to mention to decrease their intake of milk since it has so many calories. I never knew that non-fat milk has more sugar in it then whole milk does either. I do agree with him that infants and children under 2 should be breastfed and drink milk daily to stimulate their initial growth. However after watching this video I don't think everyone needs to drink milk every day for their is really no benefit like he said as well.

I also wonder how would milk straight for a cow (or with minimal processing) compare to heavily proccesed milk?

Verifed InTest The evil Milk people! Why do "most Americans matter".... if we are testing on supposedly healthy individuals. Also, besides the fact that was not my point, you would rather have people drink soda? Milk tastes good, a young children enjoy it, it is common, and does bear some nutritional value even to adults. Lastly, you just tried to link milk to bad health in the US..... How about linking levels of inactivity, and McDonalds. (because it is far more common then people drinking milk)

I can see how if you only have those 3 choices you might choose milk over the others (although there are fruit juices with less sugar than milk). However, we are not limited to those 3 choices for fluids. The point here is that people are being told they NEED to drink milk, and that isn't true. We should be encouraging people to drink water. As for vitamins and nutrients, there are foods that provide nutrients and vitamins (including alternative milks like almond and soy). Again, the point is that you can drink milk in moderation, but you don't need it and there are better choices out there.

Strange Charm Milk is one of the easiest ways to supplement reasonably healthy calories throughout the day. I think this video is lacking any conclusive evidence either way. He uses research to support the fact that basically milk has very little harmful effects, and then have no conclusive evidence and statistics but uses scary, and likely exceptional examples of overconsumption to give milk a bad image. Overconsumption of anyting is bad, duh. In a society that's still selling shit prepackaged food, heavily modified foods with additives and whatnot, I find it amazing a health professional would think it valuable to waste time bad mouthing milk of all things. 1nav Milk CAN be a valuable source of a lot of nutrients if you aren't getting them elsewhere. But the same is true of almost everything we eat. The point of this video is that once you have enough of a nutrient like calcium increasing your intake isn't going to provide any benefits. Most if not all the people in these studies will have been getting enough calcium elsewhere in their diet hence no difference when they add more. In the food saturated world we live in now overconsumption is a far more common problem than deficiency. Milk however is probably going to be more filling per calorie than juice or soda, but that will also vary from person to person. Water is the king of beverages though.

Thank you for doing this topic. Up until now I was the only person I knew of that had a reaction to milk where my GI track would bleed when consuming milk. This doesn't happen with cheese or yogurt, just milk, cream, and ice cream. I stopped drinking milk and eating ice cream when I was 27 (about 6 years ago) when I realized the connection between milk and the bleeding. I'm a little late to the party on watching this show, but I've gone through and watched quite a few episodes this week. I understand Dr. Carol's position on organic vs. non-organic foods and I get that 'organic' doesn't necessarily mean 'healthier' or 'better'. The reason I bring this up is because organic milk (and non-organic milk I've consumed outside of the U.S.) doesn't cause the bleeding. I only drink organic milk on rare occasion, and I'm wondering if my lack of symptoms is because I lowered my intake so dramatically or if it's because there is something about organic milk that is legitimately different than non-organic milk in the U.S. I still get the bleeding if I accidentally consume non-organic milk, and it's usually noticeable within a day of consuming it.

Hip fractures are especially good for this because they have a really good correlation with low bone density. Most other bone injuries have many more important factors that can skew results. I'm part of a weight loss programme with access to a qualified dietitian, I asked her and she said it was essential to have 3 portions of calcium per day for bone health (low fat versions are fine) from this list- and I for 1 believe her!: A serving of dairy would be a 30g portion of cheese (a matchbox size), 150g pot of yogurt or 200ml of milk - if you choose a low fat version of any of these, then the fat and calorie level will be less, but importantly the calcium level stays the same (even slightly more!). If you're not a dairy fan, or you choose not to have dairy, then make sure you include other sources of calcium in your diet from calcium enriched soya products, fish containing bones (e.g. tinned salmon), and green leafy veg. Dairy foods are, however the best source of calcium.

It was only in children, and I would assume it was a rather excessive amount approaching half a gallon or so a day (people do indeed throw that much milk at their children :/). Balance is essential in a child, much more so than adults. Excessive anything is dealdy to a child, even milk.

@Kram1032 10 жыл бұрын
Srew the Shadow if milk causes bleeding in children, a corresponding proportion probably also causes bleeding in adults. Though perhaps adults don't tend to drink milk as excessively as some children. Still, it seems rather surprising that a bunch of protein, water, fat and sugar coupled with a couple of micronutrients which, by definition, only are found in little doses in milk (compared to the other four things mentioned above) would cause bleeding. What about the milk does that? Obviously we are talking about absolutely excessive amounts here, yeah.

A few months ago, I switched off the soy after drinking it for 3 years, however, because my menstrual cycle was not regular (sorry if that's TMI) and I wanted to see if taking away the estrogen in the soy milk would help. I've been drinking almond milk now and have seen some positive results! I know that the research on soy is really mixed, but this is my personal experience with it. Previously I had also used soy protein powder and also had problems with hormone levels. My taste buds must have changed too, because now I like the almond. A lot of people new to alternative milks prefer the taste of almond milk, especially in coffee. I use the almond milk (and used to use the soy) for cereal, coffee, smoothies, you name it! I wish you luck on your no-cow adventures, and I hope this helped!

Did any of the studies take vitamin D into consideration? Vitamin D is directly correlated with our bodies ability to regulate Ca++ levels in our blood and bones. Although I do believe that there were some good points brought up in this video, I've also read studies that saw a correlation between building up adequate Ca++ levels in the body by the age of 30 and osteoporosis in later life. And although this was just a correlation and not necessarily a causation one of the professors at the UofS whom I respect a great deal has expressed to her nutrition class (which I was in) the importance of sufficient daisy product intakes

Those studies are all on drinking milk or taking calcium supplements as adults which clearly doesn't make a difference to fracture risk. However, iv seen systematic reviews showing kids who drink more milk while they are growing benifit from it. And not just for kids and bone health, iv seen lots of other systematic reviews showing milk consumption reduces risk for diabetities, metabolic syndrome some cancers and childhood obesity. But I agree it's not nessesary to drink milk beyond childhood and the American recommendations is way too high. In he UK it's just one cup a day of milk or yogurt, or a small bit of cheese. Yes it's high in calories and should be limited. Also, we are not the only spiecies which milks other animals. There are spiecies of ant which farm and 'milk' aphids, rubbing their abdomen so they release a sugary liquid which the ants drink. And there are many other spiecies who farm other spiecies, it's not just humans that do it.

Did anyone really drink milk because they thought it was health food, or because good, homemade chocolate chip cookies virtually require it? And how much milk does a person have to drink to cause _bleeding_? Seems like it would take a freakish amount of any food to cause bleeding.

In less developed countries than the US, which are more rural and have few doctors, there are still natural selective pressures that may be channelling minor evolutionary changes. In Europe and the US there probably is little natural selection.

There is one health benefit to milk, though. Athletes, and people who like to work out, chocolate milk is an excellent recovery drink for its balance of carbs and protein, and unlike protein powder, it doesn't taste like crap.

I don't understand why everyone labels CHOCOLATE milk as the post-workout drink of choice. Regular milk is just as good of a post-workout, save for the fact that it has a little less sugar, which you might want more of after a workout, but then again, you might not. Protein powder, on the other hand, is going to have hands down WAYYYY more protein, which is needed if you're looking to gain muscle mass. In all, milk is just a really convenient source of your 3 macros - fat, carbs, and protein.

2:40 it wasn't the calcium, it's the fact that the acidity of the milk they take regularly causes the body to leech calcium from the bones to alkalize the stomach contents, ehich causes a net loss of calcium, hence greater hip fractures. however eating green leafy vegetables which are alkaline and contain calcium reduce risk.

But I do miss the yummy pizzas of my childhood. Also, apparently, there are vegan artisanal cheese shops popping up in big cities that are said to produce more flavor and uniqueness using more traditional cheese making processes with nut butters as opposed to hydrogenated fats. Perhaps you could order some online to try if there isn't one nearby.

I'm french and here doctors say that for people that can digest milk (which is a big majority here), it is good for protein intake, for older people that are at risk of sarcopenia especially , cardio-vascular health and prevention of metabolic syndroms and diabetes. But maybe we don't consume as much as Americans because it is the first time I hear about bleeding for overdrinking it ! Most recommendation is one to three servings of dairy a day, and to vary the source if possible, so it's far from being three cup a day of just milk.

But what about athletes, for whom several studies that suggest that chocolate milk (with its carbohydrate to protein ratio) is similar to the 4:1 ratio shown to be optimal for muscle protein synthesis after a hard exercise workout? And if not chocolate milk, what would you recommend to replace milk to stimulate the same protein synthesis post-exercise? Thanks

@jeroldtoomey9362
@jeroldtoomey9362 10 жыл бұрын
Yes, that is right. You could find milks upper dose by drinking more each day until you get diahrea. Same with vitamin C. I know of no food that does well under the microscope. So much ado about what not to eat, so just what is food? Poisen, since it was poisened by the dying thing. Even beef has to be killed after the gonads are removed so it will not poisen itself against eaters such as us and everything else. Bison is shot in the wild by marksmen who aim the bullet one or two inches below the ear, otherwise we couldn't eat it. It would poisen itself. And they can not be more than two years old when slaughtered. We don't need milk because our brains don't need the fat? I didn't know milk was a brain food. We use it for building the body, not the mind. According to that logic, we shouldn't eat fat at all. No wonder I am so damned skinny. I'm afraid to eat.
@Animuldok
@Animuldok 10 жыл бұрын
Jerold Toomey I don't understand what you mean when you say that food Is poisoned when the source of the food dies. There is something that is called autolysis that occurs, but that creates no poisons, just liquefied cells. Bison is shot in the wild by marksmen who aim the bullet one or two inches below the ear, otherwise we couldn't eat it. It would poisen itself. In general I've found these videos to be excellent, but this one contradicts what every medical professional (doctors, nurses, and physical therapists) has ever told me concerning calcium intake. I was last encouraged to up my calcium intake by an NP at my university as recently as last month. My understanding was that peak bone mass is reached in ones late twenties and that absorbing as much calcium as possible before then was essential to preventing osteoporosis. This is so mind blowing to me that I would like to look further into the research concerning calcium consumption and osteoporosis prevention. Where would be a good place to start?

thewerepyreking Probably most places outside the US. You guys tend to process a lot of your produce in very different ways to the rest of the world. Quill Café American dairy cows are often fed grass year long too, it's more likley due to the US practice to UHT all milk for a longer shelf-life etc (although some recent studies have suggested that there is no additional benefit). The higher heat used tends to affect proteins and sugars within the milk, affecting the taste greatly. It also causes greater problems for those suffering from Crohn's Disease for some reason - intriguingly, all studies I can find relating to restricted dairy consumption and IBD sufferers are non-UK based (and as a sufferer, I have never been warned off dairy products beyond avoiding unpasteurised by my specialists...) That said, NZ does produce some very tasty animals!

My guess would be that the majority of milk is used for reasons other than drinking but I haven't read any stats on this so it's really just anecdotal data (which isn't all that meaningful). In my community, milk wasn't pushed as a drink so no one drinks it.

I have a question: What is your opinion on studies that find that animal protein (like milk) results in better muscle synthesis than plant protein (such as soy milk). I had been drinking soy for quite awhile due to some of the evidence against drinking milk as an adult. However, while trying to put on muscle, do you think it is worth it to switch your milk to animal protein? I've currently swapped back due to the studies in question (and the price drop hasn't been bad either for an underemployed BS graduate). That said my only milk consumption comes from a little in my morning omelet and my protein shakes. Probably about 600-650ml a day.
