Simon: "I'll use blue and red for these rectangles. Also Simon: "For this completely separate bit of unrelated logic I'll use grey and... red."
@jdyerjdyer4 жыл бұрын
He probably chose red for the second color because it would stand out better than one of the other colors and because the blue had some 89 pairs on them still so to avoid confusion as well. I personally would have used green and gray, but his choice worked fine and was easy to follow.
@megapotato18254 жыл бұрын
Maybe he avoided the other colours to try to make it more inclusive for people with red-green colourblindness. There has been more creator-viewer interaction about that lately

Just to be sure you understand... The Miracle Sudoku video wasn't so popular just because the puzzle was amazing. It was your (Simon's) interaction and clear joy while solving it that made that video popular. If I had done that video it would not have been nearly so popular (not to mention it would have been 3-4 times as long... I forget how long it took me, but more than 20ish minutes...)

~20:00 There's another way of working this out - look at what happens to box one if there are two 8s or 9s sandwiching the little killer kill. It breaks immediately. I was pleased with myself for noticing that. I was less pleased with myself when I continued to work on the rest of that little killer clue as if a 5 could still be inside it for the next ten minutes.

Wow, pretty rough break in but once you find it the whole puzzle becomes a beautiful set of falling dominoes. I think it took me 20 minutes to finally figure out the opening restriction, and then suddenly I had the puzzle completed 12 minutes later. Really impressive setting to get something unique out of this gorgeous grid, but the way the logic flows past the opening number is nothing short of a new miracle by Mitchell. Loved it.

Solved in 37:12 Simon's logic at 20:20 could have been done at 16:59 by looking at the 89 pair in the top left box. I caught this early and gained a minute on Simon there. Lost my lead at 27:58 trying to disambiguate 2 vs 3 in r9c8. I wound up bifurcating rather than finding the naked single 1 in column 9.
@paulcook29614 жыл бұрын
Simon: Let me know if you found a cleaner way. Me: errrr... I found a messier way. Seriously fun puzzle. One of the hardest I've done. Took 3 hours. I guess mine was similar logic in the end but just done far less efficiently than Simon. I ended up making up variable names for things like the corners, the 2x2 mini-boxes, the 2 singles in the middle box etc. and making formulae connecting them to each other, then plugging in min and max values of some to get min and max values of others. I eventually ended up finding that the four 2x2 mini boxes add to 40 or 41, so they must each be 1234, with at most one of them being 1235 instead. And I went from there. Now watching the video, I see that Simon "homes" in on the most direct logical path very quickly. I don't know how he does it. He goes straight down the right road, whereas I try lots of false roads and take ages to discover they are dead-ends.

Curious. There have been a couple of videos recently where we've been told that the puzzle looks complicated but really isn't too bad and I've ended up having to watch the video for some hints to get started. This one was described as tricky and I did it in 40 minutes, including at least five minutes of back tracking and there was never a time I felt stuck. Having now watched the video, I'm delighted that I got the rectangle using the 17, 18, 23 & 30 almost immediately, and spotted the 89 chaining. Just one silly mistake, a bit longer finding the naked single 1, and generally slower at entering digits. Give it a few more years.
@Samusin.4 жыл бұрын
that was interesting, as soon as simon drew those 2 rectangles i thought to myself if they by any chance added up to the same and it turned out they did, sadly that wasnt of any use as far as i can tell but i found it worth mentioning^^
@bobblebardsley4 жыл бұрын
I found it interesting that for once, the logic didn't require things to sum to 45 or 405 or anything like that, there was a bit of 17 which is obviously 8+9 but some of the other stuff, 23 etc, seemed like the kinds of totals you don't see too often in Sudoku.

I completely failed at my initial attempt, and would never even get started if I hadn't watched Simon's solve. So anything I comment here is irrelevant, as I couldn't have solved it anyways. ~~~ That being said, I do think he deduced the 4-1-1 step one step too early. Once he saw the pattern pertaining to the red rectangle, he should have gone to the blue rectangle and done exactly the same. THEN he should have deduced the 4-11 step and we would be cooking with gas! ~~~ Also at 17:23, it is fairly obvious from the 89 pairs in Column 3, Box 1 and Row 3 that the two 89s on the diagonal CAN'T be the same digit. Again, this wouldn't be necessary if he had just repeated the purple trick with the blue cells. Edit: He does this later on in the video. ~~~ Still, a thumbs up as I think most of us wouldn't even know where to get started with this puzzle.

oh man, I solved the whole thing by looking at the geometry of the 20, 33, 17, and 18 arrows (total of 88) and finding out that if I made the values in each of the cells the lowest they could be (while not breaking the 21, 27, 18, and 30 clues) then I got 87. then I found out there couldn't be a 9 in the middle of both the 21 and 18 clues because it would ruin the 27 clue and make the shape at least 89 instead of 88, hence telling me which of the cells had the extra wiggle room and everything flowed from there
