Dacre Montgomery excels again here as he somehow simultaneously delivers the Mind Flayer's monologue with the appropriate level of intensity and menace as well as expressing the underlying fear and sorrow felt by Billy. It's pretty damn impressive acting imo. Also, Steve shit-talking the Russian Commander is hilarious.

I feel so so bad for Billy. It makes sense why he's turned out the way he is with his bullshit dad. Of course the memory with his mom at the beach would be the one time he was actually happy. It still bothers me how his mom left without him. It's good that she left but why would you leave your kid behind to deal with that kind of abuse?

I think this episode proves why Billy was chosen as the Mindflayer's plaything. He was being abused & controlled all his life...and he was also abandoned. He was prime-pickings for the entity we call the Mindflayer. He was strong physically, but his mind & spirit - as damaged as it was - was ripe for the controlling. Billy's (Dacre's) tear while speaking menacingly, what terrifying & sad all at the same time. Fantastic actor. btw...your guys banter regarding these episodes, makes my morning.

The ending scene with the Mind Flayer speaking through Billy to Eleven followed by the flayed minus Billy combining with the monster has to be one of the most chilling scenes in the series. The look Hopper and Joyce give each other when they learn that the Russians are opening a new gate, they didn't say anything but just immediately just knew what Alexi was talking about.

That's why Billy acted out mad all the time his mom left him with abusive dad and he doesn't know where she went and then his dad married Max's mom and they wanted to move away and now he knows he will never find his mom because he is so far away now and because of what happened with his mom and dad he is protective over girls that's why he is over protective of max but in a mean way because even though he actually cares about her he blames her for the move because if his dad had never met her mome he would still be in California and have a chance to find his mom someday. And on a flip side I feel like he might also resent women in a way because he is mad that his mom left him the way she did he feels abandoned by his mom who he loved more. No mother should leave their child with an abusive parent just to save themselves she should have snuck out with him. And never go back maybe get cops involved or something there is always another way.

She just wanted them to get along because they were both in a similar situation and they should be there for each other but instead they hated each other because he was so mad all the time and controlled her and bossed her around and was just mean.

the reason why Billy takes his anger out on max is because if he tried to take it out on Susan (the stepmom) he would get beaten by his dad. Cause as a kid he bottled up all his feelings to the point they all combined making anger, which is why he became a bully and a rude person. I personally felt bad for him but i don’t justify his actions towards max and the other kids.

Season 4 is the best season so far. You get most if not all questions answered. Season 5 might not air til late 2025 or early 2026. It's the end of the series and apparently so big that it's going to need a lot of post production to finish!

They both live in an abusive household and they are making different life choices. Billy takes after his father but Max tries to take control of her life and fight the oppression outside of her household. She’s actually helping El to come in to her own because max actually understands how it’s like to grow up in an abusive environment.

He stopped after she finally stood up for herself and her friends. That is the only way she knows. You all don’t read in to her character enough. And first of all they are kids. All of them are immature. But all of Max’s advice to El about taking control of her own life, making her own choices comes from Max’s home situation. The duffer brothers may forget Will’s birthday but they built up Max’s character arc so well only for people like you to ignore. The core of the whole show is mental health, love and support and also the consequences of not having or rejecting the much needed support system.

@@seang3899 That's an interesting viewpoint. How could Max make El leave Mike. Mike lied to Elle, one thing she hates above all else, so she dumps him as most 'normal' teenagers do all the time. Max didn't make her do anything. This whole series is partly about Elle becoming her own person other than just being used to kill things all the time. A few episodes later she still doesn't forgive Mike straight away because it was her choice to leave him.

Completely agree. It's becoming really difficult to come back to their reactions when he seems to go out of his way in every single reaction to cheer for when female characters are talked down to, put 'in their place', or in his words "destroyed". It is clearly said in jest with all the laughter on screen and should be taken as so. We completely understand and respect anyones choice to not watch us if we aren't the reactors for them, but equally we ask everyone respect that we are going to bring our genuine selves to the channel and that will not change. That’s basically just saying as long as any bad person has had a bad home life their actions should be excused. And to me that just isn’t a great way to look at it. I think things are more gray than black and white.

a lot of people react poorly regarding billy's mom leaving him. she probably knew he would kill her if she stayed, sooner or later. and odds are, she was threatened enough to be bullied into leaving her son. that is so the kind of asshole billy's father was. happens a lot. many people forget she was a victim too. also if she had stayed, she would have exposed billy to her being beaten during his entire upbringing.

This guy keeps complaining about Max but he has sympathy for billy shows all I need to know about him 😅 bet he’s idol is Andrew Tate. Max and Billy both grew up in an oppressive abusive household with a monster of a father and their mother never stood up him or protect the kids. Billy took him as an example by repressing his good traits while Max tries to stand up for herself and El who also had been around oppressive abusive men. Max has huge trust issues because of her mothers choices even as a kid she takes caution. But all spartan sees is cringe.

Spartan and Pudgey, don't ready any further to avoid spoilers.... \ \ \ \ \ \ \ \ \ They are purposely doing this misleading thing to make us think she likes him just so they can act like they pulled the rug from under us, but I don't care what explanation Robin gives later, someone who's a lesbian isn't going to be this giddy when talking about a guy she doesn't like. How the hell did she not start talking about her actual crush in that moment is beyond me. Can you imagine yourself stuck in a situation like this and then you start talking to the person your crush had a crush on and you never mention that your crush's crush on him is the reason you are talking about him? That whole speech was bullshit that's there solely to make it seem like they have a smart "plot twist" of "surprise! she's gay" - make her gay, that's fine, but why do this whole fake misleading speech?
