Click here to learn more 👉 www.taoistwellness.online/free-course 🫶 - Hey thanks for opening up this comment! I’d like to tell you more about the story of the Taoist Wellness Online, Master Gu’s Online Academy. How the Academy started is quite a funny story 🙈. We could never have imagined that today we are now the biggest Tai Chi school IN THE WORLD! It all began when I was 3 years into my journey living with Master Gu in his mountainous Tai Chi School. Master Gu is fluent in English and has always seen it as his life mission to share the healing Taoist arts of Tai Chi, Qi Gong and Meditation with the world. He shared with me his vision to create not only online courses, but an online Academy. I was excited by this vision and shared how I could use my filmmaking and inter-web skillz to make it happen. We then had a cup of tea and Master Gu sang Chinese opera while playing the guitar… 🤠☯ We are really proud of what we have built. We now are a 16-person team from 7 countries and we are on a mission to create films, communities and transformative education to help people and planet live in balance. The Online Academy is one of the best ways you can help us on our mission and you get so much learning! If you become a student of the online Academy, you get: - Access to 100+ hours of teaching with Master Gu, recorded with love from the heart of China. - Learn with him in forests, caves and temples - all from the comfort of your own home. - An awesome student community! With regular online meet-ups. - Monthly livestreams with George and Master Gu - A (new) Taoist Wellness App so you can learn easily on the go. @@George-Thompson I like to paint using aboriginal dot art. It's really meditative. I usually paint branches I've found in nature which have their own natural flow and patterns, and it feels like a dance with the Tao itself. I'm also into playing music, but this requires a lot of practice and skill before it becomes something you can flow with easily. Still, I would tell anyone they should learn something, whether it's just a simple drum, or something as infinitely advanced as guitar. Alan Watts often liked to say "Reality is....." and he would ring a bell or chime.... So even the simplest of sounds can connect you to a deeper meaning of the universe

I don't drink tea (or coffee) at work, because they are things to enjoy. They should be savoured. This is part of my mindfulness. It is a chance for a time out from life. I only drink water at work. Plus, work only spoils the taste of your tea or coffee. I drink these because I enjoy them, not out of habit.

The BEST way to go Tai Chi walking is to ditch the shoes and hike barefoot in the mountains! Shoes act like a shield to all the senses that come through your feet and so having them on when walking in nature and trying to identify with the sensations, is like trying to meditate while the TV is on. It's not that it can't be done, but you're really cutting off the primary sensations you can get by feeling direct contact with the ground. Your bare feet are tougher than you think, and this really feels amazing once you get over the fear of hurting yourself. I did a hike two days ago and didn't wear my shoes the entire way up, walking over every rocky surface you can imagine. Big rocks feel so nice under your skin, and it's almost as if you are absorbing the electric energy through your toes (maybe you actually are!). Being barefoot also focuses your attention because you do need to be very mindful of where you place your foot on the ground, so you are less likely to have your mind wander. I started doing this years ago and will never go back. One thing i do recommends is to always have a lightweight pair of shoes as a back up if your feet get sore, the trail gets too rough, or you want to run (I use Vibram 5 fingers and attach them to a belt loop, so i don't have to carry them). I love running down the mountain, but that's way too hard on my bare feet. This truly is one of the best ways to feel connected to nature directly. We've cut off this ability to sense so deeply by wearing shoes so the time. I think most people get a taste of this at the beach, where it's intuitive to ditch the shoes, but it feels great in the mountains too, and generally, the more big rocks in the trail the better (little gravel is the more painful thing to avoid). Would love to hear from anyone who gives this a go. I can tell you it's been a game changer in my own life! Oh, and you will want to be washing your feet after a day of this lol!😂

It's a good idea but requires acknowledging the fact life has changed and the ease of walking barefoot requires immense strength of muscles, skin and more and even then it creates risk if you slice your feet on a rock, or a needle. Just get some thin barefoot shoes and it's essentially the same.
@MattAngiono
@MattAngiono Ай бұрын
@@Jackielong-sighted7890 of course life has changed. But that's not a reason to recognize how that change has negatively affected our bodies. Yes, AT FIRST, it will require a bit of adaptation to get used to. But it's A LOT less than you think. Even if you wear shoes all the time, your feet are tougher than you think. "Barefoot" shoes (like my 5 fingers even) will give you the benefit of improving the muscles, but will not give the other benefits of connecting to the ground, feeling the textures and the energy flow into you directly. You're missing out on a lot with any shoes, even the thinnest you can get. Yes, you have to be more mindful of where you place your feet, but that is also the benefit that this video described. Only if you really aren't paying attention are you in danger of cutting yourself. I walk over pine needles regularly and they rarely stick you (generally they feel nice and soft, because they are laying flat). Again, it's just about being mindful. Mostly what you are aiming for is stepping on dirt and rocks. Try it and you might surprise yourself!
@Jackielong-sighted7890
@Jackielong-sighted7890 Ай бұрын
@@MattAngiono you're missing the point and merely expressing a sentiment that Is true but not the overreaching high you assert it as. Skin is thin and it takes time to build however in today's world there's far too much risk of glass, needles and disposed items cutting your feet to pieces. I wear barefoot you're preaching to the choir but there's no swirling energies coming into your feet because you don't wear shoes and in some cases people benefit from orthopedic insoles. The great you feel from the place you once didn't doesn't mean it's good to over extol things like this. Feeling good just be practical too because it's not a case of the more mindful the safer it is, it's a case of accidents don't happen like that. And that having a space where the worst thing found is some pine needles isn't something the world has.
@Jackielong-sighted7890
@Jackielong-sighted7890 Ай бұрын
@@MattAngiono it's more that barefoot aspect allows better muscular relaxation and expression of touch that gives better pressurised blood flow, which as you likely know is the reason Japanese people are famous long-living peoples but not because of extreme exercise.
@MattAngiono
@MattAngiono Ай бұрын
@Jacksimon18909 Sorry, but I think you're the one missing the point. I didn't say to go barefoot literally everywhere. If there are needles and broken glass, maybe that's a time for shoes, yeah? I said to go hiking in the mountains. Get your feet in the dirt or on grass. Putting a piece of rubber between you and the earth is always going to reduce the sensations you feel. It's not about some magical energy. It's very real textures. There is however, what many people believe to be a grounding that occurs from touching the earth. I'm not trying to debate about that. That's barely what I care about anyway. I'm just speaking from experience. I've been doing this for years. I just did 3 miles up to 12,000 feet today. The dirt felt great. Nice and cool so many textures. The main point is the mindfulness. You really pay attention to every step because you HAVE TO. That's what the video was about, and that is why I commented. People who can't get into the mountains or on a trail can still get some benefit being barefoot at the park or the beach. The point is to try whatever works wherever you are. I'm not against shoes for most situations. This is just a practice for some of the time

Great video George and Master Gu! I think this is very much how human beings are meant to be living. Slowing down to "smell the coffee" is so vital to experiencing true peace and harmony in life. I think it's unfortunate however, that most people can't live this way. We've built an entire culture on values that are toxic and tie people in jobs and distractions that mean we have little time or awareness available most days. While i do appreciate that we can "be the change," I don't believe that is enough to truly unlock this potential for us all to live life like this. I think we need balance, and this is a place to begin, but i also see a world slipping into chaos that simply cannot be healed by us checking out and seeking our own personal enlightenment. If we really want to shift society, there is much work to be done in so many different facets of life. This way of living provides a great example of how we can be and what we should aim for, but it doesn't actually get the majority of us there. I guess what I'm eluding to is more of a bodhisatva mentality. That once we've experienced this peace in life, we are obligated to "rescue" the others from our brainwashed western cultures. Most won't just look at us and follow along. We have to actively be seeking to heal the terrible wounds our society has accumulated. This means putting ourselves back into "the matrix" to communicate and share the wisdom. It's not easy and tends to try to corrupt our minds all over again. At least, this is where i find myself dancing between heaven and hell these days. It seems you do too, George, with making this videos and having to be on a laptop to do so. I hope you find some ease in dealing with the inner citric and other voices, and can instead focus on all the other challenges society is facing. The real puzzle is so much larger than ourselves (which is truly hard enough to navigate), as we face so many global crises, from climate, to capitalism, to war, to meaning itself, and even potential extinction, should we not return a balance to our relationship to nature (which we are part of) and each other. I can't believe I'm saying this, but it seems we've developed such deep judgment and hatred that we are once again flirting with nukes, as if that doesn't mean all this mindfulness will immediately get vaporized. I don't have a solution to the meta crisis, but I do know that these practices will help. We also have to remember though, that they are not sufficient to heal everything. We will need to use our minds and communication skills within the social matrix to really bring sense back to society itself. I think this is where i stray most from my own Taoist inclinations. I don't think we can ignore the society level predicaments to just seek our own peace, because the very ability to do so is threatened by the misguided culture that has taken over. We will all have to work together if we want to survive the next decades and centuries and to transition to a world where mindful living is once again the norm. I am really hoping we do so because life is so beautiful when we can connect with nature and ourselves in these ways! Cheers, fellow humans! ☯️✌️❤️🙏

For several years I have been practicing Chi Kung, a series of breathing, meditation and concentration exercises starting with a lying position for several months, then sitting, then standing, then movement (Tai Chi) under the supervision of a Kung Fu instructor, but now I do not find it and only remember some of the exercises: 1- Relaxation. Each muscle with one breath, inverted breathing, breathing on the chest, then holding the breath and lowering it to the abdomen a little, pulling the abdomen a little, exhaling and holding the breath a little, the counts are equal, and the lying position with the hands and feet open a little. 2- Energy cleansing. The same breathing and position, but with the inhalation, draw the white energy and lower it to the abdomen with the hold, and with the pulling of the abdomen, direct the energy to the feet, and with the exhalation, release the black energy, and so on for each part of the body with each breath, and the path of the energy is the basic meridians. 3- The same position and breathing, but with the breath held and lowering the white energy to the abdomen, it is directed to the dantian and transformed into a sky blue color, and the dantian is wrapped in imagination counterclockwise and the energy is distributed from the dantian to each part of the body in the same manner as the previous exercise. 4- The same previous exercise, but the blue energy is directed to the bones. 5- The same exercise with the energy directed to the muscles. 6- Sitting cross-legged with the palms on the knees with inverted breathing, but two colors of energy are inhaled, blue on the right and reddish orange on the left, and they are lowered to the dantian from the front meridian, then distributed in the middle of the second breath on the body equally, blue to the right and red to the left. 7- The same previous exercise, but with the two colors lowered to the dantian, they are mixed and transformed into the phosphorous green color and distributed on the body. 8- The exercise of full and empty starting from here, we forgot the exercises, which were five minutes with the palms on the knee, five minutes with the right palm on the right ear, five minutes with the left palm on the left ear, and five minutes with the palms on the ears, but we forgot the color of the energy and its path after entering it from the palm to the ear. The iron palm exercise involves hitting a piece of wood with the palm of my hand for 10 minutes, then doing a squat with inverted breathing and charging the dantian with lemon yellow and moving the energy to the front center in the middle of the chest, then the energy is distributed to the hands to charge them. Can you help me complete this series of exercises until I reach the movement exercises (Tai Chi)?

Meditation is doing nothing....but doing it really well....then everything is taken care of, from the formless within... the silence behind every sound...the sound of the one hand clapping.

@@WinChun78 you don't necessarily have to do nothing, you just have to do something that you can flow with. There's "walking" meditation and also you can make art. It's different than sitting with your eyes closed, but it will still give you most of the benefits, if you have the proper relationship initially

@@AwakenZen I wonder how many Zen masters would address total strangers as "bro?" I recognize the reference. I just don't agree that you have to do nothing to meditate or that there is an ideal in doing nothing well. I generally appreciate Zen as a helpful approach to many things. I think it's far better than the toxic culture we are sold. But I don't see Zen as the only solution to the predicaments our species is facing. It's just one way of looking at things. Others are needed too

Be very careful practicing Mindfulness. It can very easily become its own obstacle to happiness and enlightenment. When you give the mind something to do like focusing it mindfully when you do things, then you’re still operating from the illusory self. Since you are not the thinker, not the doer, you eventually can realize there is no self, no one here to be mindful in the first place. The key is to allow the mind to be, its not you or your voice. Ignore the mind and don’t identify with thoughts, none of them are true anyway. Thoughts mislead, witness them, but don’t follow them.
@MattAngiono
@MattAngiono Ай бұрын
@@BaritoneUkeBeast4Life this can easily be taken too far. There is no self in the same way that there are no things at all. But there is a universe, which you are one with, and separate from, at the same time. This is the heart of non duality. There is both no self, and a self that you and your mind must navigate through life. It's nature is that it's illusion but also the only real thing you can ever experience consciously. Consciousness itself is the only thing that you can directly experience and say for certain is real, even if it's nature is illusion. It's very paradoxical. If you can awaken to the fact that the self is constructed, you can then return to identifying with and playing with it in life, so long as you do it loosely and don't get lost in obsession. There's no real goal in life, but you can "play" with the world in many ways and this requires mastery of the self as much as dissolving it. I personally want to be able to master many skills such as music, art and various outdoor activities, and play with the beauty of life, not just sit in a cave and be "enlightened"
@BaritoneUkeBeast4Life
@BaritoneUkeBeast4Life Ай бұрын
@@MattAngiono There is not really a universe only a sense of a perceived universe. The universe is part of the illusion. You are not separate from anything as everything is you. But you are not an object, not a thing. There is no such thing as a self. You are all that is here there are no "others". You don't experience anything, as nothing ever happens to you. You only witness and notice. You don't experience Consciousness you are Consciousness. You don't awaken, the imagined self doesn't awaken, you as Consciousness as Awareness are already Awake. You claim you want to master many skills, but have you ever looked for the you that wants things? Who or what is this you that wants something. Have you ever found this you? Your concept and mental image of sitting in a cave in order to be enlightened is self created and a ridged belief.
@MattAngiono

@@BaritoneUkeBeast4Life you are underestimating how much I've considered these things. You are doing the very thing you accuse me of, identifying with words and making definitive statements with them. That's fine, if you want to believe these things, but those are beliefs all the same. Yes, I've thought deeply about "who" or "what" I am and what consciousness is or means. I realize plenty of how the unordered l universe is one "thing" and I can CHOOSE to identify as that one thing. But what is the use of that identification? What does actually do to change your life? That's for YOU to decide. I've decided that yes, I want to play guitar, and make art and help people live healthy lives, and more. You make think this comes from a lack of understanding, but I'd say it doesn't. You also are identifying with a self and developing skills enough to even write the words you have. There are limits to what you can affect in the universe. I may not know the extent of those limits, but it's clear they are there. Thinking that the universe is an illusion could also be an illusion after all
@BaritoneUkeBeast4Life
@BaritoneUkeBeast4Life Ай бұрын
@@MattAngiono First off you don't choose anything. Your not the thinker or the doer. You are merely the one that witness the perceived body/mind do its thing. I never asked you to identify with or as anything. I don't recommend identifying or believing anything. Playing the guitar is wonderful, I sing, play the Baritone and Tenor Ukulele, as well as the piano and recorder. Music is joyus and fun. Nothing wrong with that in any way. I never claimed otherwise. I agree that there are limits to what one can do if your referring to a self or appearance of a person, but we as Awareness have no limits as we are not bound by any universe or physical realm. We are infinite possibilities.
@MattAngiono
@MattAngiono Ай бұрын
@BaritoneUkeBeast4Life again, these are just words.... If we want to live in a society, we need them. You have to be able to "identify" notes to play an instrument, and you should probably believe those notes sound good or you wouldn't do it. I'm not saying it's possible to truly know or define yourself. I understand your sentiment here. I just see it differently. Living in this realm means you have to play within the structure of whatever it is. Maybe there's something outside that, but none of us truly know what it is or how to understand it. I'll worry about what's outside it when I'm outside it. Until then, this is all just postulating. I want to have a healthy mind in this realm, while I'm here. Part of that, according to any theory of psychology, means identifying with a self. That self isn't constant, isn't clearly defined and will always be changing. But there's a pattern. There's some consistency. Identifying with certain parts of that, the ones I believe to be in alignment with my ethical beliefs, is healthy. It makes the world a better place. Even if this world it's an illusion, I want to have the best impact on it that I can. Especially since it's all a part of me, from the perspective you suggest. These can both be truthful ways of looking at the universe and I think both are important
